Students will partake in a seven week and seven lesson series on marginalized groups in America, these groups include- Mexican Americans, Asian Americans, African Americans, Native Americans, Women, Arab Americans, and Children. Lessons will take place the last two months of school, once we reach the 1960’s in American history. This is in an effort to have students realize that there is not merely one group that has seen racism, discrimination, and a near destruction of their culture. The following lesson will be on Native American portion of the unit. The goal of this lesson is for students to understand that each period from colonization to self- determination had causes of historical context and can still be felt today by many Native Americans.
Procedure:
Day 1: Students will be introduced to the federal policies that affected Native American. There are seven distinctive periods for Native Americans since the arrive of Europeans. The students will be divide into seven groups where they will brainstorm what they think …show more content…

This will help the teacher to know what periods have the most misconceptions and what periods students know about. This will be graded on completion only.
Formative Assessment- There are a number of formative assessment that are used. The first one is the list created on the first day after reading the passage along with student participation on sharing their findings the following day on day two. Student participation in day six when sharing their papers and the write up of a peer’s paper will be used for a formative assessment. All of these are graded on accuracy and completion and will be worth five points each.
Summative Assessment- The summative assessment will be the paper due on day six. The paper will be worth fifty points and a rubric can be found in the materials and resource section.
