The environment has proven over time that it has the power to cause change in its inhabitants. Native Americans were not an exception to this common occurrence, as they had to adapt to the changes in the environment that surrounded them. The Europeans came to the “new world” and disrupted the original culture of the land. Native Americans were compelled to assimilate their own traditions and culture to one more fitting of their new surroundings. Their religion was a component that changed drastically into a decline that left it without any of the original rituals, beliefs, and traditions. Impressively, the Native Americans “survived the catastrophe caused by the outsiders” with a disease that “killed millions, did not wipe out Native American nations altogether” (Martin, 2000). This is in part because of their religious “creativity and spiritual resiliency” that adapted to the new world while holding onto some of their own traditions and beliefs. It is certain that issues of the time reflected in their religion and “introduced major disruptions” but this upset “did not destroy them” (Martin, 2000). The stories and traditions were still carried along from generations to current day practice. It was possible as “ a shaman died, but a hunter remembered the songs of his father” and “a priest perished, but a seed-planter remembered the chants of her mother” (Martin, 2000). Certainly efforts were made in sharing the main concepts of their religion to the children as to continue its presence. Professor and poet Deborah A. Miranda, pieces together the past and uncovers and presents us with a story--a Californian story--in her memoir, “Bad Indians.” Her use of the Christian Novena, “Novena to Bad Indians,” illustrates the irony of using the form of her oppressors as a call out for help, not to God, but to her past ancestors. We tend to think of religion as a form of salvation and redemption of our lives here on Earth, in which we bare down and ask for forgiveness. But by challenging this common discourse using theological allegories and satirical terminology, Miranda turns her attention away from a Deity to call the reader out for help. It is crucial to recognize the struggles that the Native community currently face. Californian Indians are often not given recognition for their identity and their heritage, and are also repeatedly stereotyped as abusive, alcoholic, uncivilized, and “freeloaders” of the United States government. Such generalizations root back from European colonization, nevertheless still linger in our contemporary society. In his essay, “The Indians’ Old World,” Neal Salisbury examined a recent shift in the telling of Native American history in North America. Until recently, much of American history, as it pertains to Native Americans; either focused on the decimation of their societies or excluded them completely from the discussion (Salisbury 25). Salisbury also contends that American history did not simply begin with the arrival of Europeans. This event was an episode of a long path towards America’s development (Salisbury 25). In pre-colonial America, Native Americans were not primitive savages, rather a developing people that possessed extraordinary skill in agriculture, hunting, and building and exhibited elaborate cultural and religious structures.
The American version of history blames the Native people for their ‘savage ' nature, for their failure to adhere to the ‘civilized norms ' of property ownership and individual rights that Christian people hold, and for their ‘brutality ' in defending themselves against the onslaught of non-Indian settlers. There are consistent patterns or themes regarding Native American world views and the differentiation of cultural elements and society. Native Americans retained control of institutional and cultural orders against the assimilation effort because all aspects of Native American societies are interrelated, guided by the broader cultural world views. Each cultural or institutional element is, in fact, overlapped with other elements, so change in one element inevitably affects the broader cultural and social complex. While adopting to a new environment and small changes was possible in the West, where social and cultural elements are separate from each other, Native Americans were faced with conflicts and a potential, large disruption of the existing social orders.
Native Americans lived on the land that is now called America, but when white settlers started to take over the land, many lives of Native Americans were lost. Today, many people believe that the things that have been done and are being done right now, is an honor or an insult to the Natives. The United States is famous for its coal reserves, approximately 4 trillion tons of coal is found in American soil. That’s 10 percent more than any other country in the world, (Bonogofsky, 2012) however, out of those 4 trillion tons, nearly 30 percent is found within Native American land. After colonization, displacement, and relocation, the government assigned Native Americans to reservations. Little did they know that those lands are now estimated to include nearly 50 percent of the nation’s uranium, 20 percent of the natural gas and oil reserves, and as mentioned before around 30 percent of the nation’s coal (Grogan et. al., 2011, p. 3-4). The council of Energy Resource on Native American tribes estimates that Native American resources are worth as much as $1.5 trillion, making them the richest minorities in the United States. However, as of today Native Americans are among the poorest factions in the country with unemployment ranging at about 50 percent on reservations, including high rates of homelessness, crime, and unsuitable housing (Regan, 2014). My research will focus on why some Native American tribes have a low socioeconomic status even though their lands are rich in resources? Do they want to exploit their resources? What’s the government’s role on Native American land?
During the 20th century, there were many Native American groups that fought for their people’s rights. Each group had various styles of fighting for their culture, their lands, and constitutional rights. Some groups decided to fight in a more political style such as lobbying, while others turned to a more active approach in the streets of their own cities. The American Indian Defense Association (AIDA), the National Indian Youth Council (NIYC), and the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) were some of the most influential organizations that impacted the Native American activist movement.
