Max Gaston Period 3 Finding the way in a new, scary, and suddenly oversized world is one of the hardest tasks a human ever undertakes. Finding the way against the odds and becoming successful, is something humans all wish for, but hardly ever reach. It takes a particular set of circumstances, no matter the connotation, to become truly exemplary. One of these exemplary outliers is Elon Musk, now successful billionaire ,and real life version of the Marvel genius, Tony Stark. In school Elon was picked on harshly and continuously by his brutish peers. The unfortunate reality of why he became so good with computers and engineering was because he didn’t have many friends due to his brutal treatment in school. Elon was always a thinker and kept to himself, because he was often too afraid to interact with others. He tells Maya Kosoff from Tech Insider “His classmates pushed him down a concrete stairwell. In one instance, he was beaten so badly that he needed to go to the hospital.” (Kossoff, Maya) He wasn’t given many options to be social which really increased his introversion and inspired him to pursue his more academic activities in length. Although, his negatives setbacks weren’t only from strangers. His mother wanted to influence every aspect of his life. She wanted him to study law at a local school in South Africa, because she wanted to get her PHD too. She recalls “When Elon was 17 and my daughter was 15, they really wanted to move to Canada, where my family is from. I’m really just lucky, that’s it.” (Musk, Elon) Elon was lucky, especially when It came to meeting Adeo Ressi, the man he would make his fortune with. The two entrepreneurs met at Queen’s University, a college Elon was lucky to be able to enroll to. They made an instant connection, and one that would prove worth it. The two together founded Zip2, a site that connects advertisers and distributors through a simple process, as an initial project along with Elon’s brother, Kimbal. The three geniuses used $28,000 dollars of Maye Musk’s generously donated money and then went to sell the company for $307Million dollars. The three didn’t stop there, along with Elon’s sister, Tosca Musk, they founded well known PayPal. Now a practically family business founded on values of pure personal connection. Today, in the business world, there are many influential and successful men and women; however, one particular man has influenced my life, as a role model and inspiration. Matthew Menner is the senior vice president of strategy for Transplace, Inc. He works for a leading third-party logistics and technology solutions provider, focusing on transportation management business processes outsourcing. Throughout his life he has held many jobs, but they all have one thing in common: each job he has received is from his network. Though his jobs are respectable, it is not just those that have inspired me; it is how he got there and the process of becoming a successful business leader that motivate me. Matthew Menner graduated from Green Mountain College, where he received his associates degree in liberal arts. From there, he followed his dream of working on the railroad and went to college at Syracuse University and completed a bachelor’s degree in business administration-marketing management, and masters in transportation and distribution-marketing management (Green Mountain College). After meeting Menner during a presentation at Castleton State College, I realized he reminded me of myself. His inspiring story encouraged me to believe I can and will achieve my goals because of the determination and drive he has shown me I possess. I know I can accomplish the unimaginable, because of Menner’s success.
Analyzing success and applying different theories from being born at the right month, to practicing 10,000 hours, plus demographic luck are some of the key concepts to success. Outliers is a non-fiction book written by Malcolm Gladwell. The first part Outliers explains various methods and theories of success and how certain individuals such as Bill Gates, have become extremely successful. The second part of Outliers expresses cultural legacies and how it affects success. Success is usually overviewed by individuals differently. However, after reading Outliers and the theories that Gladwell explains throughout the book, have provided much more of an understanding in the true meaning of success. Comparing and applying Gladwell’s theories to highly successful individuals such as Larry Page, Mark Zuckerberg, and Jerry Rice, will be further explained in depth.
Henry Louis Gates Jr. was born in 16th September, 1950, in West Virginia, Keyser. He studied and traveled globally before he became department head in African-American studies, at Harvard University. Henry Gates is an acclaimed critic and author who has disclosed a wide range of literary gems. He is an educator, an American literary critic, a writer, a scholar, as well as an editor. Henry was the first black person to be offered a fellowship by the Mellon Foundation. On top of that, he has received several honorary awards and degrees for his research, development, and teaching of academic institutions to learn the black culture (Dorman 135). Gates was chosen, in 2012, to offer the Jefferson Lecture. In addition, this was done for the purpose of acknowledging his eminent intellectual achievements in humanities. On the other hand, he has hosted many PBS television miseries inclusive of the travel and history program, Finding Your Roots (2012), the African American Lives, and many others. Throughout time, man has watched many successful people reach the apex in their career fields. Men like President Lincoln, President Kennedy, and Steve Jobs positively influence many and provide examples of success on a large scale. But many people do not realize that Lincoln, Kennedy, and Jobs all have one thing in common. All three men parents who did not see academic success as the most important thing in the lives of their children. But even without having academic superiority forced upon them, all three men became some of the most well-known and admired men in American culture. He is leveraging all aspects of innovation through so many different companies and organizations. Including vehicle production, rocket production, and Hyperloop production. He was adopted at birth by Paul Jobs (1922 -1993) and Clara Jobs (1924 ` 1986). Jobs went through rocky days in elementary school. Despite his rough time in elementary school, Steve was able to skip couple of grades. Steve enrolled at Reed College in Oregon but he dropped out after six month. Steve studied creative classes, including calligraphy.
