Today´s society is filled with people that only care about money and a person's profession when it comes to valuing an individual's life. Many people think that having a lot of money, college degrees, and working for a top notch business or company defines who they are, but what about the people who may not be successful in the world's view, but are happy because they are doing what they love to do ? Steve Jobs gave a commencement speech at Stanford University, in 2005, advising the graduates to follow their passions and not to listen to other people's advice about what is valuable or not. He also advised them not to waste their time living someone else’s life. Steve Jobs advocates for individuals to have the bravery to follow your …show more content…
These concepts have been in the minds of many individuals since childhood. Jobs implements these lessons due to the fact that they will eventually face them in the future. Jobs view on the value of life assist individuals on what they are going to face later on. He breaks down his speech into three sections, and in his first section “Connecting the dots”, he talks about connecting the dots of life, because everything that happens in life is a blueprint that will lead us to our success in the future. Jobs states that, “you can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards”. His assertion is true because he is saying how you have to trust that in the future the dots will connect in your life. What you do now will determine what you are going to do in the future, thus the reason he says “you’ve got to do what you love” and follow your passion. Jobs also say that you can not have your future already planned out. You have to let the dots connect as you …show more content…
In Hamlet’s Soliloquy, Hamlet was very miserable and did not have a good life. Hamlet says that the agony of life is that no one is willing to bear the unhappiness except when they are afraid that something will happen after death. He also says that we as people do not know what to contemplate in the the afterlife, we would rather live in agony because we are scared. Hamlet was scared of afterlife which is the reason why he could not follow his dreams. “To be or not to be”. This explains the difference in Hamlet’s Soliloquy and Steve Jobs Commencement Speech because Hamlet is doing the exact opposite of Jobs advice. Steve Jobs tells us that we’ve got to do what we love and follow our hearts, but Hamlet did not follow his heart and had a miserable life because he did not love what he was doing. He felt that if he committed suicide, all the pain would be gone and everything would be just
One of the most famous Shakespearean lines-"To be or not to be, that is the question” is found in Hamlet, spoken by the title character himself. While this is the most obvious reference that Hamlet makes to this own philosophy, Hamlet makes frequent proclamations about his stifled life throughout the play. Hamlet views his life in a negative manner, to the point where he finds himself contemplating whether or not to end his own life. Hamlet does not value his life, which causes him to become flustered with himself and his lack of action. Therefore, demonstrating that Hamlet does not value his life as one should.
Steve Jobs is trying to say that you should live every day like it is your last. He knew his life had value to him and his family. He felt like life was worth living even though once in a while a hard choice would come along to toughen his life. Making a choice is very hard, but when making a choice it should be one that you will not regret later in life. Making choices is one of the hardest things in life so you must see all the good and all the bad to the outcome of your options. Live everyday like it is your last. Ebert says that life is a very precious thing. Hamlet wants to die, but him not knowing what is on the other side scares so he decides to live. Even though Ebert had to get surgery, he got through it and learned to still live his life with no regrets.
Hamlet's classsic "To be or not to be..."(Hamlet, prince of Denmark, 3.1.57) speech really shows who he is. Obviously Hamlet is horribly depressed. We have already seen several examples of this, but this speech gives us a clear picture of his sadness. More importantly however, his speech shows his weakness and indecisiveness. Hamlet is consistently melancholy, but he never really acts on it; he just kind of wallows around, full of self-pity and loathing. Finally, it gives us Hamlet's reason for not committing suicide. Throughout the play he seems to wish for death and here we find out why he doesn't bring it on himself. This also gives us a window into his personality. This speech provides us with a clear understanding of Hamlet and his motivations.
Essentially, it all comes back to consequences. If Hamlet takes his life to escape his troubles, he could end up with worse predicaments in the afterlife. However, killing Claudius could very easily end his own life as well. The true irony lies in the multiple deaths Hamlet will unintentionally cause, which includes his beloved Ophelia. This speech connects to many of the play’s themes: including suicide, love, truth, teen angst, the debate between thought and action, natural order, inevitability, and so forth. The soliloquy is crucial. Here it reveals the quality of Hamlet’s mind, his passionate nature struggling relentlessly to escape his misery. And although, there is much up for debate, the reader is reassured that Hamlet has not departed from Christianity. There can be no doubt of his conviction in heaven and hell.
In this year of 2015, many people think racism is non existent. The President Barack Obama is black. There are black musicians such as, Beyonce and Jay Z dominating the charts. Some may even say there is no reason for The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Times have changed in many ways however, the presumption that racism ended is completely wrong. The presumption that America is an equal and accepting country is false. In American history, there have been triumphs against inequality. With these triumphs the country has gone into a slumber. The thought of change is the thought of ignorance.
Most hated man in America, Martin Shkreli. Thirty three year old man received this title after a 5,000 percent increase price of Daraprim from 13.50 dollars a pill to 750 dollars. Daraprium is an antiparasitic to prevent infection such as AIDS, malaria, etc. After being streamed in the media, people started posting negative comments about Martin Shkreli. People questioned his experience in drug or disease research. According to Lee, Martin Shkreli had no real experience with disease research all he was good at was reading and memorizing medical journals and textbooks. Not having knowledge of the disease, it demonstrates that he does not care about his customers. Successful entrepreneurs like Martin Shkreli, money is what is considered important
In Hamlet, Hamlet wants to avenge his father’s death, but wonders whether the struggle of living and carrying through with his plans is worth the hardships, or if death is a better option. Shakespeare writes a soliloquy where Hamlet discusses with himself whether he should live or die. Shakespeare discusses the idea of suicide through metaphors, rhetorical questions, and repetition until Hamlet decides that he is too afraid of death to commit suicide.
People all around the world are familiar with the “To be or not to be” speech. Although some might not realize it is a speech by Hamlet, they do realize how powerful those lines are. Those lines show the mark of a great philosopher, and this is precisely what Hamlet is. Because Hamlet is such a fantastic philosopher at the start of the play, it leads him to what some believe is his downfall. The fact that perhaps he thinks too much on the people and incidents surrounding him is really what pulls him down. He spends an excessive amount of his day thinking about every aspect of every event.
In the play Hamlet, written by Shakespeare, Hamlet feels extremely negatively toward life. “To be, or not to be? That is the question—Whether ’tis nobler in the mind to suffer The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, Or to take arms against a sea of troubles, And, by opposing, end them?”(Shakespeare Act III Scene 1, Lines 57-61). This is saying, “The question is: is it better to be alive or dead? Is it nobler to put up with all the nasty things that luck throws your way, or to fight against all those troubles by simply putting an end to them once and for all?” Hamlet is contemplating whether to move on from his father’s death, take action, or kill himself. He felt that life
I consider Steve Jobs’ commencement speech at Stanford University in 2005 to be one of the most effective speeches. He uses mechanics of speech to craft a well-rounded speech that is crowned by his use of rhetorical devices. Jobs gives relevant and fundamental knowledge of his life and experiences with his rhetorical approach. In his speech to the Stanford’s graduation class, he tells different stories of love, loss, discovery and difficulty he faced in his life to encourage new graduates as they continue to mature in life. He encourages students to pursue their dreams and not be discouraged by failures they might experience in life.
Wayne Dyer once said, “The measure of your life will not be in what you accumulate, but in what you give away.” I don’t believe that one should measure the quality of a life based on career success, but on the net effect of it, and how it has enriched society.
In Dave Cornthwaite’s TEDx presentation, he talks about his journey in life and how he found happiness. He explains how he struggled with many of the thoughts that college kids struggle with as well. More specifically, he talks about his struggle to find his identity and what he wanted to do with his life after college. Cornthwaite’s target audience is the young generation mainly college aged people dealing with the question of “What do you want to do for work after college?” Most college aged people feel the need to know exactly what they want to do right after college, because your degree is going to get you there. Cornthwaite explained to his audience that he followed “societies path” and got a job working for someone after college and he was completely unhappy with his decision. He wishes to persuade the audience to think about your passions, nurture them, and follow them.
In this quote, Hamlet is asking if it’s better to be alive or dead? If it’s worthy to put up with all the nasty things that life has in store, or to give up once and for all. Hamlet seems to be considering of killing himself. Once you die, you don’t know what happens after or how it’s like. Hamlet then realizes that death wouldn’t be the ideal escape he desires. Death could be much more worse than life.
In Hamlet’s famous soliloquy of Act 3 Scene 1, “To be or not to be: that is the question.” (3.1 634), not only is he contemplating suicide in this moment but he seems to have no moral or religious objections to acting on these thoughts. Death for Hamlet and many others seems like an easy way to escape reality and all of life’s problems, yet no one can tell you first hand what lies on the other side of death. With this in mind, he talks of the sizable amount of people who would kill themselves yet the fear of what lies on the other side is keeping them from going through with their
agony. Despite the fact that life can be treacherous, Hamlet foregoes suicide because the afterlife may be worse if a person takes his own life.
