Today, in the business world, there are many influential and successful men and women; however, one particular man has influenced my life, as a role model and inspiration. Matthew Menner is the senior vice president of strategy for Transplace, Inc. He works for a leading third-party logistics and technology solutions provider, focusing on transportation management business processes outsourcing. Throughout his life he has held many jobs, but they all have one thing in common: each job he has received is from his network. Though his jobs are respectable, it is not just those that have inspired me; it is how he got there and the process of becoming a successful business leader that motivate me. Matthew Menner graduated from Green Mountain College, where he received his associates degree in liberal arts. From there, he followed his dream of working on the railroad and went to college at Syracuse University and completed a bachelor’s degree in business administration-marketing management, and masters in transportation and distribution-marketing management (Green Mountain College). After meeting Menner during a presentation at Castleton State College, I realized he reminded me of myself. His inspiring story encouraged me to believe I can and will achieve my goals because of the determination and drive he has shown me I possess. I know I can accomplish the unimaginable, because of Menner’s success. Menner’s career started when he attended Green Mountain College. During his time at college, he met Renée Beaupré-White. After class one day he meet with her, and during the meeting, he told her something he had no plans of doing. This book is important to business students because it shows that even the most seasoned executive runs into unexpected challenges and can find themselves in uncharted territory. Jim Barton’s experiences and lessons can be lessons for anyone. Any employee, whether they are support staff or a top executive, should always maintain an open mind and be ready to learn from a situation or the people around them at any time.
Competition with others can cause us as individuals to want to better ourselves and make us strive to improve positively. It allows us to assess what we can change and develop in education and or experience. My colleague Hailey La Fave comments, “ I’m constantly trying to better others and their venues trying to get people to come to mine. This to me, is positive, because everyday I'm trying to better myself with my promoting and helping the venue grow. So my competition results in better sales and bigger shows.” In making this comment, Hailey points out that the competition she feels within her job positively affects her and gives her the drive to improve business for herself and her co-workers. Therefore, because she feels compelled to help draw in more business and make more profit she feels self satisfaction within herself when the company does well. Not only does Hailey’s personal experience illustrate the improvement that can occur within ourselves from competition, so does this quote from Empowher magazine, the journalist Darlene Oakley states, “Wayne Gretzky, Steve Jobs, and Nelson Mandela didn’t become the best at what they did or achieve what they did by staying the same. They worked, and strove, and experienced failure and setbacks many times before becoming the people we now revere them for being.” Darlene is saying here, that empowering people of our nation haven’t made self progress by allowing their faults to stop them but in fact allowing it to help them become the people they are recognized as today and will be for the rest of time. Because of their struggles and feats with competition they have found ways to improve themselves and make contributions to the world. This case study demonstrates a young woman leader, Toby Johnson, who used to serve in the military as a pilot and attended Harvard Business School, joined PepsiCo’s Leadership Development Program (LDP), and was working in the management team at the Williamsport plant. She determined to forge ahead, and led the plant to achieve the Level 3 CI and also won the Doolin Award, which the Williamsport plant had never achieved before. The problem that Johnson encounters currently is that if the plant should continue to forge ahead and achieve the ultimate Level 4 CI, which will cost huge amount of money and efforts with the risk of her sudden leave of plant.
Heroes and leaders have long had a popular following in literature and in our own imaginations. From Odysseus in ancient Grecian times to May Parker in Spider-man Two, who states, “We need a hero, courageous sacrificing people, setting examples for all of us. I believe there’s a hero in all of us, that keeps us honest, gives us strength, makes us noble” (Raimi, 2004). Organizations need heroes, too. We call them organizational leaders. The study of organizational leadership, then, is really the study of what makes a person a successful hero. Or, what processes, constructs, traits, and dynamics embody the image of a successful leader.

“On leadership” was written by John W. Gardner (The Free Press, New York, 1990). He used seventeen chapters to explain and describe essential components for the leadership should be in a successful organization. This book not only has significant influence now, but also for the future. Below are my understanding about this book, which was divided into two parts. For the first part, I will pick up some perspectives which influence me most from this book. For the second part, which is my comments and critique about this book.
Leaders with idealized influence serve as role models to their employees and emphasize the mission’s importance of the mission. Mark Zuckerberg runs his company based on the principle that, “I will only hire someone to work directly for me if I would work for that person” (Weiss). Zuckerberg wants to assure that his employees share his thinking about Facebook’s mission and how Facebook progresses. He makes sure that his employees understand his ideal and are influenced by his passion for Facebook. In the book “Think like Zuck: The Secrets to Facebook 's Success” Ekaterina Walter, mentions what Zuckerberg believes in when he hires people for the company: “No one can achieve success alone. So hire people who share your values and beliefs. And hire for attitude: skills can be taught, passion can’t” (Walter). Through these elements of what he believes in, Zuckerberg has shown that he is very focused on influencing his employees through his passion and emphasizes the importance of the mission because only people with passion can overcome the obstacles that they deal with in their job. He wants to assure that his employees can overcome all the obstacles with not just the skills they have but with their determination. The selection of contemporary leader book was challenging at first, however after considering the attributes and qualities of different leadership styles Steve Jobs: Ten lessons in leadership written by Michael Essany was the best choice. This book discussed what can be learned as a leader and the lessons are relevant to my own leadership style. There is a direct relationship of the lessons and Steve Jobs’ leadership style identified including wait for nothing, fail big or don’t bother failing, limit your confidence to your field, there’s no substitute for passion, consider your legacy before you have one, and there’s always ‘one more thing’ (Essany, 2012). The lessons illustrated that Steve Jobs was progressive in his thinking and relentless to develop technological advancements that consumers could not live without. Therefore, Steve Jobs leadership style was influential and other entrepreneurs need to utilize these lessons in pursuit of similar success.
In our BA-509 Leadership Development course, we learned about the Transformational Leadership Theory. This theory states that, leaders with a tendency toward transformational leadership, are creative, brave, risk-takers and sophisticated thinkers. They work eagerly and optimistically and become the role models that employees seek to emulate. Additionally, they encourage their employees to be innovative and creative and reward them for doing so. Transformational leaders develop unique relationships with their employees tailored to their various needs and backgrounds in order to help the employee realize their potential. To inspire and influence others, a leader must have many skills and abilities. As motivational speaker Jim Rohn, states, “ the challenge of leadership is to be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant; have humor, but without folly.” (2010) Moving an entire group of individuals toward a singular goal is a considerable undertaking. Without effective communication skills and a clear vision of what needs to be accomplished, one will feel like they are trying to herd cats rather than leading.
One of the most important components of leadership is the leader. A leader is responsible for his or her followers and the overall goal of the group or organization. Leaders are the people held accountable or everything that happens, good or bad. On the other hand, the second major component of leadership is the followers. Without followers, a leader would be worthless. Followers make up the backbone of a leader because they are the masses that get goals accomplished. A leader is just one person, but the number of followers is countless. In order to be an effective follower, there are a countless number of characteristics that allow a follower to be the best they can be. Five of these characteristics include a positive attitude, communication skills, being part of the process, being open to new ideas, and patience.
