One of the single common-sense myths about writing is that good readers make good writers. This is a common misconception. Reading a lot only makes you a better reader. Reading critically and analyzing what you read will make you a better critic not a better writer. Only writing makes you a better writer. They do not call people plumbers because they read books about pluming, do they? So, if you have always dreamed about being the next Charles Dickens or if you just want to be a better writer… you need to sharpen those writing skills.
You need to choose good literature written by great writers. This may sound obvious, but this would be a good place to start. If you do not read great writing, then you won’t know how to do it. Everyone starts

This may be opposing to the above where we wrote “just write”, but it is not. Planning or pre-writing thinking helps you become a better writer. Brainstorm. Drop down your ideas, even doing an outline if needed. Then, when you are ready, you can start your writing using these brainstorming ideas. Experiment with writing. We can emulate great writers, but that does not mean we have to write just like them. We can borrow ideas from great writers, but you can experiment with styles, voice, mechanics, and themes. Try new words, even invent new words and see what works and what does not? Toss it out. What better example than Dr. Seuss who became a famous writer with his unique writing style. Revising is an essential part of being a good writer. Many famous writers revise their work. It is part of the writing process. If you want to be a good writer you need to learn how to revise because revision is where good writing really is. It separates the unexceptional from the unlimited. Get feedback. Getting feedback from someone else, preferable a good writer, someone who reads a lot who can give you honest and intelligent comments will help you become a better writer. Really try to understand their criticism and accept it and use it to improve your writing. Let others read your writing. It is part of a writer’s
Stephen King and Malcolm X both say the key to being a good writer is studying, and practicing. To be good at something you have to take the time, you do not just become an amazing writer overnight. The effort and time you put in will be the reason for your success or your failure. They both say to be a great writer you not only have to write often you have to write every day. You also need to read everything and all the time, Stephen King says you need to read for at least four hours a day. Malcolm X read some days for up to 15 hours or more. This was not only because he was in prison and had so much free time, but because he wanted to. It was his choice to read all the time, to learn as much as possible. To be a great writer you need to want
Several people have trouble writing college level essays and believe that they are unable to improve their writing skills. In “the Inspired Writer vs. The Real Writer,” Sarah Allen argues how no one is born naturally good at writing. Sarah Allen also states how even professional writers have trouble with the task of writing. Others, such as Lennie Irvin, agree. In Irvin’s article “What is ‘Academic’ Writing?” states how there are misconceptions about writing. Furthermore, Mike Bunn’s article “How to Read Like a Writer” shows ways on how one can improve their writing skills. Allen, Bunn, and Irvin are correct to say how no one is born naturally good writers. Now that we know this, we should find ways to help improve our writing skills, and
Many people think that reading more can help them to think and develop before writing something. Others might think that they don’t need to read and or write that it can really help them to brainstorm things a lot quicker and to develop their own ideas immediately (right away). The author’s purpose of Stephen King’s essay, Reading to Write, is to understand the concepts, strategies and understandings of how to always read first and then start something. The importance of this essay is to understand and comprehend our reading and writing skills by brainstorming our ideas and thoughts a lot quicker. In other words, we must always try to read first before we can brainstorm some ideas and to think before we write something. There are many reasons why I chose Stephen King’s essay, Reading to Write, by many ways that reading can help you to comprehend, writing, can help you to evaluate and summarize things after reading a passage, if you read, it can help you to write things better and as you read, it can help you to think and evaluate of what to write about.
Some suggestions that Zinnser makes are quite simple. You should keep your sentences uncluttered with not too many words. You should also pay close attention to your tenses as not to confuse your reader. You should be very careful about knowing what you want to write about and think it through so that it will make sense. Zinnser states that “the secret of good writing is to strip every sentence to its cleanest components.
On Reading to Write, Stephen King is promoting the idea that becoming a writer involves doing “two things above all others: Read a lot and write a lot.”
I found that learning by example helped my writing greatly. One of the books we read, “The Sixth Extinction” by Elizabeth Kolbert, influenced my writing. The book is well written in an academic style that engages the reader. Her writing also flows nicely throughout every passage. I tried to
Writing and reading are two essential skills that we need to have in order to succeed in any field of study that we have chosen. Without these two we would not be here, wouldn’t be writing right now and would be considered the lowest class of our society. There are different aspects of writing that each of us may, or may not, excel at. Some of us are creative enough to write short stories or even novels on fiction while others, like me, are better at writing essays. To accomplish this we have all had a person to inspire us, to drive us, to get us over the hump of confidence that we need to succeed. Still to be successful we need to count on ourselves to succeed.
Writing is a way in which a person can express their thoughts and ideas through the use of words. Everybody has their own writing styles. Some may consider theirs as inspirational while others think of it to be bad. Writing requires a lot of patience and time. In my case, writing has never been my favorite thing to do. I am no Shakespeare and I never will be, writing has always made me feel uncomfortable. In the past, I had always considered writing to be one of the most difficult tasks. I often wrote about topics that were not of my interest. I rarely did any writing out of school or for leisure as most people do. I only wrote because the teacher asked us to. Writing has always been forced onto me. Even though my writing isn't that great, I've felt that I've never been given the freedom to express my voice. Academic writing has always made me anxious. And, anxiety had resulted in my procrastination. Even though I consider writing to be one of the toughest tasks, I've felt that giving myself enough time to think allows me to do better. Silence helps me think beyond horizons. However, the fear of impressing someone, the anxiety and frustration is what makes me a developing writer.
How do I become a better writer? Is it by proofreading and listening to my teachers? Does it come in time? Or should the question be what do I write better about? Do I write better about scientific garbage or idea and topics I can actually relate to. I will go with the latter. I write better about topics I am passionate about. For example, I can write more vividly about cheerleading and soccer than I ever could about evolution. Let us focus on becoming a better writer again. I watch television and go to movies frequently. I occasionally read books. Reasonably, engaging in visual entertainment and reading other authors’ work aid in my writing style. The shows I watch and the books I read are usually about topics I am interested in or passionate about. Specifically, the movie Pleasanteville, the television show Felicity, and two books A Perfect Storm by Sebastian Junger and A River Runs Through It by Norman Maclean help me to become a better writer.
There is so much more information to be gained on the other steps of the writing process. The writing process can be extremely over whelming too many. This is why it is incredibly important to take the adequate time in the early stages of the writing process to create a solid foundation. During the first stage of the writing process be sure to ask what should be written, the parameters of the writing project and know the audience that the project is being written for. Brainstorming the topic, creating an outline and freewriting all help to narrow down a topic and organize thoughts about the subject of the writing project. These steps will aid in creating a draft of the writing project. Drafting is one of the very important steps in the writing process. The first draft will be revised scores of times to create an interesting and successful finished product. These first steps in the writing process can lead to a solid and successful writing
Writing is a process that takes multiple steps. Starting with brainstorming and finding a topic, then organizing the idea into an outline. Outlining is an important step as this is where you generally form your thesis statement. This tells the reader generally what your essay will be about. From that point forward forming a thesis statement as one of the first challenges in getting started helps in making a strong path to follow. This makes it easier to put your ideas from the outline into writing a rough draft. Once you have a first draft, proofread and edit to make a final, polished essay. Refreshing this process has helped me greatly in improving my personal writing.
Reading and writing has always played a vital part in my life. From toddler to adult, pre-elementary to college, I’ve managed to sharpen both skills to my liking.
