Reflecting back to the start of English 122, I feel I may have started with a little more confidence in myself as a writer. As I progressed through the course however, I realized I had a lot of work in improving my skills. I found I needed to be refreshed of the basic construction of an essay as well as some basic grammar and syntax skills. Reflecting on the last eight weeks of English 122, I have learned the basic steps of the writing process, the importance of utilizing outlines, and have improved my overall writing skills in a formal essay. Writing is a process that takes multiple steps. Starting with brainstorming and finding a topic, then organizing the idea into an outline. Outlining is an important step as this is where you generally form your thesis statement. This tells the reader generally what your essay will be about. From that point forward forming a thesis statement as one of the first challenges in getting started helps in making a strong path to follow. This makes it easier to put your ideas from the outline into writing a rough draft. Once you have a first draft, proofread and edit to make a final, polished essay. Refreshing this process has helped me greatly in improving my personal writing. I have used outlines in the past, but never heavily relied on them to build an essay. Generally, I would start with a blank page and jot down rough sentences. This however is not a fool proof method, and I sometimes found myself lost, or restating the same information twice. In the Module Two Discussion post, Lesa commented that my topic about childhood friendships “pulled at her heartstrings.” Lesa’s comment gave me confidence to go forward with my narrative essay topic as I would have a great hook for my introduction. Once... ... middle of paper ... ...ing anymore.” I have now come to rely on one to two people to read my work with a fresh eye to catch any minor details such as grammar and basic sentence structure that I tend to keep missing after reading my essay. This has become an important part of the proofreading step of the writing process. Even with the help of an outline to organize my thoughts, I don’t always get the words written cohesively. Through each Milestone I have rediscovered the true importance of each step in the writing process. Outlining my thoughts and ideas on my essay topic is essential to building an organized draft. Proofreading and reforming the first initial draft yourself, as well as having friends and family read your essay helps create a neater, more cohesive essay. Knowing these important steps will help in me succeed in my remaining courses here at Southern New Hampshire University.

English 1020 has enhanced my reading, writing, researching and reflecting skills by giving me the opportunity to practice writing, reading, and reflect on diverse topics. My perception of writing was also positively impacted by taking this course. I now view myself as skillful writer rather than just a college student taking writing courses to pursue my degree. In the beginning of English 101 I was what you call a novice writer a person who only wrote what they felt was required. However, certain techniques that I learned in English 101 made me realize that writing was not about filling requirements; it’s about speaking out, exploring and proving a point. “Writing is an exploration. Change is interwoven in the learning process and therefore is inevitable. It is beyond amazing to reflect on ourselves and see how much we change in just six months. I do not know what is more remarkable—the change itself or knowing that that change represents an expansion in our knowledge, a growth in our abilities, and an improvement in our writing. However, one thing I am sure of is that it feels good to see that, excuse the cliché, hard work does pay off.
Recently, I have been writing quite a few essays and papers throughout my college experience. This entails, but not limited to, English, History, and Economics. My style of writing and methods have generally remained the same throughout the process. In this assignment, I will be discussing how I prepare to start a paper, what my thoughts are through the process, and my strengths and weaknesses of what my final drafts look like.
Hoping for the best but expecting the worst, I walked in to English not knowing what to expect. English 111 was boring at times but in many ways helpful. College Composition I main objective is to teach students the fundamentals of academic writing and critical thinking. Aside from learning how to academically write, recognizing grammatical errors, tone, and different styles such as MLA, APA, and CMS, are some other things learned in the course. This essay will be evaluating the book as a whole, self-reflections, essays, my strengths and weaknesses and my professor.
Writing is an important part of everyone’s life, whether we use it in school, in the workplace, as a hobby or in personal communication. It is important to have this skill because it helps us as writers to express feelings and thoughts to other people in a reasonably permanent form. Formal writing forms like essays, research papers, and articles stimulates critically thinking. This helps the writer to learn how to interpret the world around him/her in a meaningful way. In college, professors motivate students to write in a formal, coherent manner, without losing their own voice in the process. During this semester, I have strengthened my writing by trying new writing techniques, learning about purpose, and finding new ways of combating writers block. My first essay in this class was less focused then the essays I wrote later in this class. I was overwhelmed by the length requirement of the essay, and had limited experience with different writing techniques. This semester, however, I have attempted both listing and outlining. I had never used either techniques before, nevertheless, my writing benefited did from these new techniques; however, I believe I had more success with the listing technique. I used listing while writing my classify and divide essay and I believe it helped me to stay on topic and keep my writing organized. I used an outline to help me write my compare and contrast essay, and while it did help with organization, it was more complicated than the listing technique.
The outline I first used in my literary essay was the wrong format, so I had to redo my paragraphs and reorganize them. Nevertheless I used another outline to do that. Still, my literary essay made me comfortable with making and using outlines. I could see all my million ideas in one place and was able to pick and choose them by how I needed. My outlines help me control my explanations and make sure I do not write a seven page essay.
Over the past semester, I have found the most challenging part of this course to simply be the transition from high school composition classes to college. Because writing expectations are so different in college than in high school, even with AP and Dual Enrollment “college level” classes, I first found myself being overwhelmed with the pressure to write the perfect first draft. The pressure came from knowing how much a final draft of a paper contributed to my grade. This left me sitting in front of my computer for hours at a time with thoughts of what I wanted to say racing through my head, but unable to deliver these thoughts into organized, structured sentences. I learned, through writing my persuasive essay, that instead of trying to write the paper start to finish and already in its perfect form, it is easier for me to look at the paper through its different components and focus on them individually, then work to best organize my ideas fluently.
The fourth stage of the writing process is proofreading this is where you go line by line to edit each word,sentance, and punctuation mark. In this stage you will also want to check for any grammatical, mechanical, punctual, spelling, and usage error it is also good to have a second pair of eyes for this stage from a peer, co-worker, or family member so that if there are any errors they can catch them. This helps students because getting critique from someone else is very beneficial because you can miss small errors from focusing on your writing for so
One can figure out what they expect to write as they write rather than waiting. Thus, after writing the thesis, one can always come back to fill up gaps in the thesis statement. One problem, which I experienced in the course of my writing, was the idea that I needed perfect drafts. I realized that putting unrealistic expectations in the early parts could make you focus so much on the impossible task of ensuring they are perfect. Thus, the development of ideas can be restrained during the initial parts of writing.
Right from the start of this class, I was curious as to what I would learn about compared to the previous semester. I know that my writing skills are weak and I was taking this class in hopes of having them improve greatly. I was worried that this class was going to be a big challenge for me, and I have found myself to be right. My writing skills are weak and I have a hard time understanding most concepts within English as I always have struggled. The assignments came and routinely they were completed as I waited my grade that I feared so greatly.
