My Writing Skills

This semester I set some pretty high goals for myself, to improve my reading, writing, and verbal skills. While I was mentally present in the classroom my attention did tend to waiver outside of the room. Was it age, lack of effort, or priorities that contributed to my success or failure as a Communication student. I love to read! This is something I developed later in life as a way to take some time for myself. While in elementary and secondary school it was a necessary evil to an end. I think that because of this most of my reading has been for pleasure as opposed to knowledge so I never developed the ability to be critical of what I’m reading. Once I start writing the words flow onto the page which is great. I feel that there has been an improvement with my content and structure so that my writing is more focused and knowledgeable and less babble. I find summary writing is something that I tend to enjoy most because I am taking someone else’s work and putting it into words that I can understand and remember. It might be because being a student this is the writing style I use the most. Also with summary writing there is less chance that I mix up the first, second and third person because it is my interpretation of what is being read. I am definitely more comfortable in front of a camera but it seemed to contradict my natural desire to look around while presenting. I have never been a person who likes to be the centre of attention and talk to people, knowing this, the first thing I have tried to improve in my life is eye contact which means trying to make eye contact with everyone in the room, our presentations went against everything I have been trying to correct in myself. One area it did help though is being more prepared with my information that I needed to present. I needed it to be informative but easy for me to glance at the paper and get the required information to continue on with my presentation. I’m not sure if this is a skill that I will carry with me through the rest of my classes but I do think that it is defiantly a skill that I can take into the workforce.
