Thinking back to my first day of my senior year in high school, I remember how much dread filled me whenever I thought about the upcoming year in English IV. Now, one semester through this class, it is not nearly as bad as I was told it would be. I am not a great writer, and I knew that coming in. However, I really wanted to challenge myself my senior year so I would not slack off and take all of the “easy” classes. Yes, I thought this class would be a challenge, but I did not imagine that it would challenge me this much. This class has allowed my writing to improve a tremendous amount. I came into the year a pretty good writer, but knew that if I wanted to get an A in the class that I was going to have to do the work to earn it. This class is infamous for being difficult for even the best of writers, so coming in and being complacent was not an option. In the pre-writing assignment the grade that I would have receive would have been a B, but now the end of the semester I am continually receiving an A of some sort. …show more content…
Williamson has for us, but so has the process of beginning an assignment. I have continually noticed a trend with my essay writing, anytime I wrote down an outline before I began my paper I scored better than if I just started writing without anywhere to go. After I had established this trend, every paper that I wrote began with making an outline to stay organized throughout the paper. Once this realization was recognized, I consistently received better grades with each paper, and in turn my confidence in my writing also
Entering this course I was worried because I have struggled with writing in the past, and writing has never been my strongest area. I feared writing classes in middle and high school, and had the same expectations for this course. I had wondered if I was ready for college English, and was worried that my skills and abilities would not be one the level they needed to be for college courses. My attitude and understanding of my writing process have both changed since the beginning of this semester. One thing that really helped my attitude and confidence was the fact that I was able to complete the assignments and get a decent grade. I was worried that I might not be able to do college level writing, and when I started completing the assignments and learning new ways to write my confidence and attitude changed. Another thing that really helped me throughout this course was that there was plenty of reading and information available to guide me through my assignments. I realized that there was more freedom when it comes to writing than I had experienced in high school. Being able to write more freely, and the freedom to choose what subjects I would write over made the assignments more enjoyable and easier to
This class was far more intense than what I expected but I was able to make it through the semester. I learned a lot from this class that I will carry into the future and use in other classes. All of the revision and feedback I have received during the time in the class helped me in the end. I feel like I am gradually becoming a better writer. I will take everything that I have learned in this class and use it for future reference when writing papers. I overall have enjoyed this class this semester.
There were many different techniques and devices; I used to achieve the goal of each essay. My first goal is to read and take notes on the chapter and trying to understand the concept on my own. Second is to listen during lecture and reviewing examples given of how to start my paper. Third is making sure to ask questions if I did not understand how to proceed. All of these ways were the answer to having successful papers this semester. These steps were critical in my writing process; I was able to use these concepts to create a stable flow in my writing. Previously, in my high school classes I would just start writing and then go back to rearrange my essays but in college that would not work out. With the help of my instructor, Ms. Perkins she helped me gain a flow of writing and structure. I planned out all four of my essays before I started to write them, and I think using that process made it much easier for me to
English has always been a struggle to me, but mainly in high school. Through my experience so far into my first semester at Shawnee State, there has been noticeable improvements in my writing skills. During high school, English was my failing class. My essays weren’t that great, scoring lower than average in my class. During those years, I never applied myself enough to get where
When I applied to Middle College, I was concerned about my ability to meet the writing expectations of my English 100 class. English would prove to be difficult, as my professor expected great work and many revisions. The course would become my revelation class, where my writing skills evolved to showcase more textual analysis and better reading comprehension. Outlines and planning tools became important aspects of our grades and they helped my writing process tremendously. I was able to use these new methods when writing the many literary analyses my professor assigned us. As I wrote these essays, I developed an appreciation for the authors and their craft. The stories offered new perspectives in life, and I had to break apart the abstract
This course has taught me many things about writing and also a lot about confidence in my own skill as a writer. I was not looking forward to this class in the beginning of this semester, but I am really glad that I took it. It has been a great learning experience to take this class.
I feel as though this class has helped me become a more polished and professional writer. When I first entered English 110, I was extremely unsure and lacked confidence in my writing. I believe that this point can be partly attributed to the fact that I had always had my instructors holding my hand and helping me through the writing process in high school. My senior English teacher always reminded us that college would be much more challenging than her class was and then she would go on to tell us stories of professors who gave out zeros for tiny oversights within a paper. This combined with general apprehension about college life left me terrified. I had always been a strong writer in high school; I know how to form an argument and support
Throughout the past five years my passion for English literature and writing has been ignited thanks to the many teachers that have guided and introduced me to this intriguing world. Viewing this subject as a necessary evil in the beginning, I am astonished that I have come to say that although time consuming and tedious, I am thankful for everything these courses have provided. My weakness as a writer that I am looking forward to improving, are my grammar skills. There are three pivotal writing experiences that have impacted and shaped me into the writer I am today. Reading “To Kill a Mockingbird” by the talented Harper Lee, exploring many of the poems by the creative genius Langston Hughes and making my own poetry portfolio have all been both instrumental and enjoyable.
Growing up, I never thought writing and reading were a struggle. They were always my strongest subjects. However, after I was enrolled in this class, I realized I wasn’t as great as I thought I was. I realized that in my years of being in school, I never actually had the resources to plan out an amazing essay and get the grade I deserve. I was never pushed to try hard enough, until I got this class.
I would like to call my experience of writing as the life of reading and writing. In my opinion, writing can not be achieved without reading. When we are in elementary school, we start writing. We know how to read words before we start writing words. Before we start writing, we already read a lot.
When I was in elementary school, I was diagnosed with dyslexia. Reading and writing were challenging for me despite my comprehension being above grade level. Because reading and writing play a part in every subject of school, all of of my grades suffered; I would take almost twenty minutes to copy the warm-up from the board during math class. It also took me so long to read books, I had to use audio books in order to keep up with the class and participate in discussions. I would have stay up until midnight to make should I got all my homework in and understood it myself so I could keep up with my classes. As a result of my difficulties in school, I almost stayed back each year. However, I was lucky; I had parents who were willing to fight for me and made sure I received the support I needed because they believed in me.
I am very interested in attending the Belin Blank Summer Institute for creative writing. I love expressing myself and one of my favorite ways to do it is through writing. Writing is a great thing no matter what kind you enjoy. From deep and meaningful poems to fun and exciting stories there is no boring form of creative writing.
As I approached the second semester of my freshman year at Meredith College, I was actually quite hesitant regarding the fact that I was enrolled in my first college English class. All while I was growing up, I have always possessed a love for reading and writing. English soon became my favorite subject, and I absolutely loved expressing myself through my assignments and papers. However, as I became older, my love for the subject of English slowly deteriorated, as my previous English teachers drove my passion down. Naturally, I had no idea what to expect walking into my English 111 class, but after completing the class, I am so elated to say that my passion for writing has increased dramatically. There is no doubt in my mind that I have learned
In the memory that I can still remember, the first time I learned to read and write my primary language very seriously was about 11 years old. At that time, a series of novels are very famous during all ages of students. Each of my friends and I bought one of the series and exchanged to each other after reading ourselves. However, those novels are written for high school students. It was full of ancient poems.
Through this semester, I believe that this is the best class I ever take, but on the other hand, this is the worst class I ever take. The reason why I believe this is the best class for me is because I have improved my writing skills a lot through English 1A. For example, I have improved my pre-writing skills so I can write much more easily when I really start writing. Furthermore, professor and students in this class are really nice, so I have gotten a lot of helps from them; their helps motivate me to keep enhancing and improving myself. However, this is the worst class for me because English 1A is the most challenging class for me since I still have many writing weakness.
