Scrubbing off fish slime underneath filet tables may not be my favorite task, but it is a part of my job. My character and qualities all changed when I started working my sophomore year in high school. For nearly two years, I have worked at a small business every day during summer break, every Saturday during the school year, and any other time I can help. The small business is a fourth generation fish company founded way back in 1944 by my great-grandfather. I started working with little to expect only knowing I’d be able to start saving money. Work has given me more than a paycheck; I’ve become more of a leader at work and the more I’ve worked the more I’ve developed an impressive work ethic. Within the past two years, my job has helped me build relationships and grow as an individual.
Family is the most important aspect in my life. Working for my family gives me extra motivation. I love to think from the perspective as if I owned the company. What’s the benefit of coming in late and setting bad examples? When I walk around at work

and see something out of order, I fix it because who else will? If I see another employee standing around doing nothing, I find a task for them to do. What’s the point of employees getting paid to do nothing? Although I consider myself at the bottom of the totem pole, I love to think from the top. With that attitude, I’ve gained lots of respect from other employees. I do many jobs at work.
I clean, unload trucks, pack orders, cut fish, assemble packages, assist customers, and any other task my boss wants me to do. My job is very physical and tiring, but I don’t pout because I’m lucky to have a job. Over the summer, an employee and I were assigned to clean the facility every Friday for sanitation reasons. This part of my job is really important because we sell fish. If one thing goes wrong, customers could get ill and the company’s reputation would be ruined. Cleaning the facility is my biggest responsibility. Inspectors from various agencies, including the FDA, randomly come to inspect every room in the building. I clean with various cleaning products such as bleach and industrial soap, so I have to wear goggles, an apron, and boots. I clean: the floor, tables, drains, walls, garbage cans, doors, and more. Luckily, our recent inspection received an A rating, proving my hard work has paid
off. One of my finer qualities is that I tend to always put school in front of work. I balance school and work very well because I work on Saturdays during the school year. Nelson Mandela once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can change the world.” I find it necessary to study and get good grades before getting a paycheck because school gives me my foundation. Now as a senior in high school, I have lots of responsibilities and feel more prepared for the real world. In the future, I see myself continuing to use my work ethic to guide me in college and beyond.
In the essay, “The Work Ethic, In A Modern Guise”, author Joanne B. Ciulla talks about how the modern style of working is different from the traditional and old work ethic, and how the young and coming generation does not want to work hard but instead wants instant results. The long lasting formula of working hard and performing seems to be fading away. Instead of mastering the subject, students care about the final results and brownie points. Moreover, Ciulla asserts that students engage in activities that pay-off well in the end rather than the excellence of the work. In the article, Ciulla describes the situation of today’s students being more centred about the idea of getting a higher grade. According to Ciulla, students do not show determination but they want second-chances so that they can have a better grade than before. Students want that better grade simply because they have put a lot of time. Sometimes, professors unreasonably give students a higher grade which leads to a false confidence among students which is the root of other causes. In the end o...
The American work ethic is something our country should be proud of. Since the days of George Washington Americans have worked hard for what they believe in, what they need, and what they want. It is our right as Americans to be able to work for these ideals. Without out a strong work ethic our country would crumble. From businessmen to politicians a strong work ethic is necessary to keep our country financially and politically stable.
America was built around the idea that if you work hard and endure your hardships you will reap the benefits life has to offer you. As religious leader and author Gordon B. Hinckley said, “Without hard work nothing grows but weeds.” Many families in America continue to instill a hard work ethic within their children, and the prosperity of our country relies its citizens work. Although, living in a country where more vacation time is being offered sounds luxurious in the long run it only negatively affects problems concerning, obesity, less household funds, and increased feelings of stress.
The following paper aims to discuss and analyze the way in which my personal values intersect with the values I hold as most important within the profession of social work. It would stand to reason that these values would stand on common ground; however, there are places where my personal and professional values diverge. These conflicts may prove to be problematic within my chosen career unless I find a way to prioritize my values, or find ways for them to work harmoniously with each other.
It is very important to be on time because accountability is everything. I suppose no one is ever late but if they are typing an essay will make them never late again. But on topic being on time shows that you are trust worthy and you can be depended upon. If we were actually deployed in a combat zone you would only want people by your side that you trust. You want to be on time because if you’re late it can mess up people’s schedules. If you show up late it makes people think that you don’t care about your career and that you are just shamming to get by. Showing up on time shows professionalism, it shows also that you are trustworthy. It shows people that you have leadership and that you don’t need someone watching over your shoulder babysitting
Ever since the beginning of Organizational Psychology, work motivation has been a big topic of discussion and research. Based off of what I learned in class lectures, motivation is a complex force that drives people to behave in certain ways. Motivation is an effort expenditure that energizes, directs, and sustains, however, it is not the same thing as performance or ability. Over the course of this discussion, I have formed a variety of ideas about workplace motivation and have better equipped myself to define what I believe creates a motivated, productive, and engaged workforce. Looking at all of the different motivational theories, I believe Herzberg’s two-factor theory, job characteristics theory, the equity theory, the equity theory,
Professionalism is defined as one's conduct at work. The quality of professionalism is not restricted to those in occupations with high level of education or high earnings. Any worker regardless of their level of education or occupation should demonstrate a high level of this trait (About.com, 2013). Acting professionally at workplace makes others think of you as reliable, respectful, and competent.
I have an unusual working style, I’m an explore and excite kind of girl. My individuality is key to my success. I need to be allowed to work in my own way. Traditional methods of working are often limiting to my creative mind. I function best in and open-ended, semi-chaotic environment. I thrive in change and enjoy action-oriented settings. I am inspired by people working together, thinking outside of the box and making connections between ideas.
There are so many things that are important to me, but only a few that could greatly affect my life if I didn’t have or accomplish them. The biggest things to me are success, family, and freedom. These are all things that are essential to my life in so many different aspects.
Motivation is key in the workplace. It is developed from the collaboration of both conscious and unconscious principles such as the strength of desire or need, motivating force or reward estimation of the objective, and desires of the person and of his or her peers/co-workers. These elements are the reasons one has for carrying on a specific way. An illustration is an understudy that invests additional energy contemplating for a test since he or she needs a superior review in the class. The Inside and outside principles that animate want and vitality in individuals to be constantly intrigued and centered around their work, part or subject, or to try to achieve an objective.
Since early last summer, I have been employed at Arby’s. Arby’s is a fun and exciting place to work except on the bad days. On a good day I walk into Arby’s and everybody greeting me it is overall nice atmosphere. I slid my finger to clock and the computer works fine no problem I get to work. First, part of the day I spend cleaning. on the weekend I get there about ten minutes till eight o'clock. I have to clean the fry box which is
From an early age, I have been told that if you want something in life you have to work for it. My Parents taught me that nothing in life comes free. My family has not always been in the best financial standing if we wanted a toy or a certain brand of clothes we had to work for it. This is what I believe will help me get through college and through life. A great work ethic is not something everyone has in today's society. I believe that this is something I have the privilege to possess and it is all in thanks to my parents. However, I do not think that this is something that can only be applied in the business world, but in academic studies as well. Throughout my academic life I have not always been at the top of the class and there are subjects that I struggle with nevertheless I work to keep
According to Treviño & Nelson, ethics are “the principles, norms, and standards of conduct governing an individual or organization” (as cited by University of Phoenix, 2012). Ethics are essential in the determination of what is right and wrong in a given situation (University of Phoenix, 2012). When we are born, we do not have any values, morals, or ethical systems in place, as these are learned and developed over time. Today, we are going to take a closer look at my personal ethics and the underlying ethical system that most closely applies to my life. We will also examine the effects that my ethics have on my performance within the organization. Finally, we will discuss why it is important to have ethics that are integrated within an organization.
We all spend a large portion of our week at work and sometimes that amount of time can skew our priorities. However, at the end of the day it is family that is really important. Early in my career the perception was that in order to get ahead you had to be the person putting in the most hours. I would often come in early and stay late to show my commitment. However, over time this perception has changed and I have found that it is not true that putting in the most hours makes you the best employee. The birth of my son six years ago really changed my perceptions and priorities. When my husband and I were both focused on our careers it was easy to get in the pattern of working long hours, but once you have a child at home you have a very good reason to not spend every waking hour working. I have discovered the true importance of work life balance and contrary to my old beliefs I think it has actually made me a better employee. I am motivated to do my best when I am at work, while working very efficiently and with a purpose. I am much happier in general with the balance and my family is also happy. This value will continue to be of great importance to me for the remainder of my career. I think it also makes me a more compassionate and empathetic leader and my employees respect my values and want to also do their best while they are at
Throughout this semester in my Human Services Skills and Methods class I have learned a tremendous amount about myself, the career I am choosing, and the clients that we serve. I learned what it takes to make a great leader, how to participate in a coalition, and what techniques to use within a counseling environment. All of these qualities that I have studied throughout the semester, are going to help me become a better Social Worker, and a better person within society. This class helped me stay motivated to do well in class and to keep my eyes fixed on my goals for my future career.
