As the last notes of the song rang out and the audience sat in silence for a moment before they erupted in applause. The violin recital was a success, all the time and effort I had put over the years made it all worth it. I had moved on from the scratchy, shrill notes of a beginner to the clear, melodious notes of an experienced player. The technique that was challenging to me as a beginner is now second nature every time I pick up my violin and play. When I began I struggled knowing how to fix and overcome my problems, but overtime and with the help of my private teacher my problems became easier or completely disappeared. I had a difficult time holding my violin and bow, knowing where to put my fingers, and what fingers played which notes …show more content…
There are two types of rosin light rosin and dark rosin. Dark rosin is softer and is best suited for dry climates. Light rosin is harder and better for more humid climates (Scott). I learned there is a correct way to put rosin on my bow. Rosin looks brown when it is in the package, but once you rub it on your bow it is white. The first time I put rosin on my bow I put a little too much on, so when I pulled my bow across the strings white dust flew everywhere. It was like snow in July. After this experience I put just enough rosin on my bow, so it would stick to the strings, but not too much that would result in another snow storm. After I figured out how to put rosin on my bow I ran into my next problem.
I couldn't get the violin to stay on my shoulder, it kept sliding off. I learned there is a simple fix for this problem called a shoulder rest. A shoulder rest is a plastic base with a foam pad on top. There are two feet, one on each end, that hold the shoulder rest onto the violin. Once I placed the shoulder rest on my violin, my violin didn't slide around anymore. After I had all my equipment figured out I actually began the process of learning how to hold my violin and

The first term is frog. When I first heard this term I thought of the amphibian that lives in the water, but this isn’t the case. The frog is a rectangular piece that the bow hair hooks into that slides when the screw is turned to loosen or tighten the bow hairs Another term is the bow grip. The bow grip is just above the frog. When holding a bow, the violinist puts their thumb under the wood right next to the frog, the pinky sits right next to the screw on the end of the bow, and the other fingers sit on top of the bow grip to help balance the bow (Anderson). It seemed awkward and uncomfortable at first, but over time I got used to holding my bow this certain way. Once a violinist can hold their violin and bow correctly, they are ready to learn about the notes a violin can
I played well in the game. And I haven't touched the violin since because of that. " i. (Wiesel 93).
Trying really hard to not disappoint her parents by quitting the violin. Overworked and stressed from her upcoming audition.
Throughout history music has had a profound effect on a person’s mind, body, and consciousness. A song or piece of music can trigger vivid memories, and induce emotions ranging from deep sorrow to unabashed joy. Music can drive listeners to patriotic fervor or religious frenzy, or it can soothe the savage beast we call human. There have been many advances in technology that have let us study how music affects the brain. Music causes all sorts of activity in the brain, especially during musical improvisation. Music can tremendously help people with certain mind damaging diseases, and in some cases it can have negative effects.
I had made it through all the rounds. Now “move ins” were upon us. After school let out for summer break in May, I moved into the campus where we would spend a couple of weeks really working out the 13 minute show we would compete with. Never in my life did I think music, the thing that I loved most, would also be the thing I sometimes abhored. Move ins carried on at a grueling pace. 7 a.m. came, and we were on the field practicing until 9 and sometimes 10 o'clock at night. The only breaks we got were for water, and our three meals; though honestly I can say I never wanted to quit. There were over two hundred other people going through the same things I was, and they weren’t giving up. We were constantly picking each other up, pushing ourselves to the next level, and getting up and doing it all again the next day. I wouldn’t give up now, not after everything it took to get
Presenting a recital for the public is a daunting task. It exacts from the performer a number of skills which must come together at the exact hour of the performance. I like to think of the solo recital as the musical equivalent to the athletic triathlon. In the case of the recital, the three areas that must come into complete alignment by the recital date are musical expression, mental focus, and physical preparedness.
I stood up, as the loud vibrations of the church bells seem to touch my heart. I crossed the long, seemingly endless stream of soft healthy green grass to the black box, which lay just as I had left it in its own solitude. Inside of it lay the violin in which I had devoted a lot of my middle school life to. I had spent many hours practicing on this wooden contraption. Now all of my hard work, all of my hours practicing, would go into making this one piece sound amazing, spectacular, and memorable. This wasn’t something I was doing for myself. This was something I was doing for my family, friends, and most importantly the sweet, cherished soul of my dearly departed grandmother. I wanted there to be one last remarkable token of my love for someone who had made such a large impact on my life. I knew that my grandmother had absolutely loved the fact that I play a violin. She had always said that I held so much talent.
Violin : by name Fiddlebowed, stringed musical instrument that evolved during the Renaissance from earlier bowed instruments: the medieval fiddle; its 16th-century Italian offshoot, the lira da braccio; and the rebec. The violin is probably the best known and most widely distributed musical instrument in the world. (The Editors of Encyclopædia Britannica)
Bill Viola was one of the first visual artists to make use of new video technologies. As a pupil he experimented enthusiastically which new portable recording devices, with which he created short video performances that explored a range of sounds, gestures and expressions.
In my physics research paper, I will be discussing the mechanics of the violin, but first some history. The oldest relative of the violin was a lira which was held standing up and had a bow to create sound. This was one of the first string instruments. As the Byzantine Empire expanded it brought it’s values and instruments with them and mixing the cultures of Europe with theirs. Over the next centuries, Europe developed two different types of fiddles that had originally branched off the lira. The most common was known to be more square-shaped and held in between the arms which were called the lira da braccio, which eventually evolved to the fiddle/violin. The other was more enlarged and was held between the thighs and was called the lira da gamba which more closely represented a cello. On the other side of the world, the evolution of the earliest examples of a bowed instrument and of a bow itself goes all the way back to the eleventh century, almost a century before the byzantine empire. And In recent discoveries the earliest “reference” to the fiddle was found in Ireland and was dated to the seventh century, and it was either bowed or plucked and had three to eight strings. This is highly significant because it shows that the precepts of violin originated from many different parts of the world.

There are quite a few differences between Classical and Romantic music; these two types of music are from two different time periods (and that is probably the most obvious reason why they are different from each other). The Classical period in music lasted from about 1730 until 1815. This was the time of composers such as: Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Christoph Willibald Gluck, Domenico Scarlatti, and “Papa” Joseph Haydn, among others.
For me personally, music appreciation is defined as looking at different pieces of music and musical forms, and learning to find appreciation for them. This appreciation is formed not only by listening to several pieces of music, but by learning to understand what you may be listening too. This involves introducing yourself to many pieces of music and learning to interpret, what makes each piece different and unique. Understanding the historical background and societal changes that have taken place during the creation of the musical piece, is also an important factor to consider. Music is not only creative, but it also makes up part of a societies history. Music is an art form that connects different societies and cultures together, it possess the amazing ability to make us into one.
Overall, my experience with the Iowa State University Music Education Programs has been and incredibly effective and worthwhile experience. While there are always areas that can be improved upon, especially in the ever changing world of education, I believe that ISU’s program is set up in such a way that adequately prepares students for what the real world of music education looks like. In order to properly frame my reflections on the Music Education Program, I will be using the Iowa State University Teaching Standards that were in place during my time at the university.
Many people do not often realize what the most revolutionizing and most important instrument is. In fact, this instrument can be found in every style of music in some way, shape or form. The one instrument that fits this criteria is the drum. According to the Harvard Dictionary of Music, a drum is a generic name for instruments that consists of skin stretched over a frame or vessel and struck with either hands or sticks. Drums are membranous. In other words, a drum has something inside of it, or a "membrane," that gives it its sound (Apel 247). There are many different types of drums, and each drum has its own place in different styles of music. For example, a tympani drum, also referred to as a kettle drum, is mainly found in classical styles of music,
The term “flute” refers to a woodwind instrument that is held horizontally while being played. The oldest flutes are said to be from 35,000 to 43,000 years old and were found in Germany. There are many names for flutes, such as the cross flute and the transverse flute. Around 1000 AD, in the 10th and 11th centuries, it seems that the flute disappeared then reappeared with the rise and fall of Rome. In 1670 the flute went from being one peice to three: the head, body, and foot joints.
