There are quite a few differences between Classical and Romantic music; these two types of music are from two different time periods (and that is probably the most obvious reason why they are different from each other). The Classical period in music lasted from about 1730 until 1815. This was the time of composers such as: Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Christoph Willibald Gluck, Domenico Scarlatti, and “Papa” Joseph Haydn, among others.
The Classical period of music was a time in which the melody gained a new lyrical significance. Prior to the Classical period, the melody in music didn’t have as much lyrical weight as it did in the Classical period. This essay therefore will aim to discuss the numerous ways in which Ludwig Van Beethoven expanded the formal and expressive content of the classical style he inherited. The characteristics of romantic music are influenced by the Romantic Movement, where the arts of literature and painting play a great role in influencing romantic music. Other evidence of non-musical influences in romantic music is the popularity of romantic poetry during that era. Poems, opera arias and works form great romantic poets are transformed into instrumental works and composers like Schubert uses musical elements such as melodies inspired by poetry in his works (http://absoluteastronomy.com). The musical language itself has shown that romantic music is different from the rest of the music before its time. Extended tonal and harmonic elements are noticed in romantic music compared to those in the classical era, where chromaticism, the usage of dissonance, and modulations are used extensively.
It seems as if the classical music from the Romantic period was more amplified. I learned that the classical music would have tunes that got longer and stronger, with louds that get louder and quiets that get quieter, the mood changes are bigger and happen more often (which I think coincides with the fact that romanticism brought about putting more emotion into things), the orchestras got bigger, and the music went on longer. I learned that Beethoven was a composer from the period, along with Johannes Brahms, Richard Wagner, and Franz Liszt. I tried to see if I could find lullabies or something from the period and I did find a website that presented lots of songs, though it didn’t state what period the songs were from (they included ‘A Hunting We Will Go’ and the like).
