Beethoven is viewed as a transitional figure between the classical and romantic eras and from 1800 to 1809 he write some of the most revolutionary compositions in the history of western music. This essay therefore will aim to discuss the numerous ways in which Ludwig Van Beethoven expanded the formal and expressive content of the high classical style he inherited.
From early 1770's to the end of the eighteenth century the concept of the symphonic style and sonata style dominated most of the music composed. These forms ,employed countless times by Mozart and Haydn, stayed relatively constant up until the end of the eighteenth century when Beethoven began to extend this Viennese classical tradition. Haydn was Beethoven's mentor and therefore , i believe Beethoven's music is more influenced by Haydn than Mozart. Haydn employed the use of sudden pauses and this is reflected in Beethoven's music as he made extensive use of unexpected fermatas (Example). Humor is arguably the most prominent feature of Haydn's music and again is mirrored in many of Beethoven's compositions. However, Beethoven's music is sometimes completely solemn and other times extremely comical. "Beethoven transformed the music tradition...but never changed its validity...he never abandoned Haydn
The Late period of Ludwig Van Beethoven's life is characterized by his desire to compose new sounding and more troublesome music, and to fuse together more polyphonic styles of music from past writers like Bach and Handel into his music. The late period of music concentrated on composing music very nearly only for musical purists, and even large portion of those had a troublesome time admiring the new style. Beethoven likewise tried to consolidate the polyphonic styles of Bach and Handel into his late period, and subsequently a great deal of fugues can be found in these compositions. Then again however, the greater part of the arrangement that were created in the late period were his most driven and were the most prolonged to compose. He also delivered the longest piano sonata, theme and variations, choral work, string quartet, and orchestra. These pieces in this period were made while Beethoven was totally deaf.

An example of Beethoven writing his in early style in a later period of his life is the fourth movement of his thirteenth string quartet. It is a very simple and joyous piece in dance form and clearly draws influence from Haydn. The simple hamony and playful melodies are very similar to Haydn's string
