Self-concept is the sum total of beliefs that a person has about themselves (Kassin, Fein, & Markus, 2013). The beliefs that we form about ourselves comes from the environment we grew up in and the individuals that we chose to associate with. All human begins want to connect with others on some sort of level. Which may result in some lying. The truth in this comes because when we are able to lie to ourselves makes telling others easier. That is to say that people will always have at least one thing about themselves.

It has given me a cynical view on how love and romantic are supposed to work in real life. Although I believe its concepts when it is applied to works of fiction as that is the only place they belong. Within the pages of books or the screen. They gave me a warped perceptions of how individuals are supposed to work within a relationship. Also makes it difficult to allow any form of healthy relationship. Healthy in the sense that there is take a given in the relationship, not one sided (Zapata,).
The ones that have influence my self-concept would be my family. Though it was more on my older brothers than anyone else. This is due to the fact that my mother had always left early in the mornings and was tired when she came home. On the weekends I was see my father with my brother. To be able to open up to more easily towards others. Or allowing myself to have deeper conversations that go passed the shallow surface of what conversation occur. I know I do not does this as often as I should because I fear any long-term relationship either in friendship or romantic. The thing that I would really like to change is not to run away where emotions are become more vital in continuing a friendship over the years.
It stems from my childhood as all my siblings would leave without a word of where they were going. Also I tend not to want to participate in different groups of people. But I am not internally isolated because I have found friendship with people within fandoms that I considered myself a part of. With people who do not follow the mainstream America, in terms of music or films. My current self-concept affects my communication as do not activity participate in when it does not involve family and friends.

According to Carl Rogers (1959) self concept has three different components: The view you have of yourself (Self image); How much value you place on yourself (Self esteem or self-worth); What you wish you were really like (Ideal self). These ideas of self concept do not necessary have to reflect the reality of what is to be known as truth to the outside observer. Such as in the case of those who struggle with anorexia. The first unit on our textbook Interactions by Ann Moseley and Jeanette Harris talks about the self-concept. It is hard to find a definition for the self-concept because it is certain beliefs about ethnicity, religion, and personalities combined. This unit has a number of readings by various authors where it shows struggles with the self. Self-identity, ethnic backgrounds, and self-esteem are the major aspects of those readings. After reading their writings I found that I could relate to their experiences. The three readings that got my attention were “Zero” By Paul Logan, “I’m Just Me” by Lylah Alphonse, and “The Jacket” by Gary Soto.
What does sense of self-mean? It means what that person sees when they look in a mirror. Whether it is a decent, awful or an indifferent image. Everyone’s self-image is different, and that’s acceptable; normal even. No one person is exactly the same. The authors explain how a sense of self is like internal conflicts and the decision to lie in order to gain approval.
Self-concept is who you think you are and the relatively stable set of perceptions you hold of your self, not only the physical features but also including emotional states, talents, likes, values, roles.
This article, Life as a Maid’s Daughter by Mary Romero, takes the reader through the life a girl named Teresa. She lived a unique life, because she was able to see the differences ways in which different races and social classes of people live in America. Teresa and her mother Carmen are lower class Mexican-Americans, and the people that Carmen is a maid for are upper-middle class white Americans. Throughout her life Teresa learns about different aspects of herself (i.e. race, social class, gender, and family) through interactions with her biological family and the families of the employers.

Self deception is the process or fact of misleading ourselves to accept as true or valid what is false or invalid. Self deception, in short, is a way we justify false beliefs to ourselves. There is no doubt that sometimes we are not realistic. Not all of our actions are rational or intentional. Sometimes we avoid reality, we deny the truth, and we fool ourselves. In some cases we may see the world the way we want to, and not the way it is. Self deception raises basic questions about the nature of belief and the relation of belief to thought, desire, and will.
In order to understand how one perceives situations and how they can determine the way one communicates; we first must understand the value of self-concept. Self is easily defined; it is one's beliefs, attitudes, feelings and values. It is who one is and what one stands for. Self-concept, is a relevantly stable set of perceptions and emotional states. It is the way one sees and understands oneself, and contributes to how one perceives oneself and perceives situations. One's self-concept may alter their perception, and either enhance or impede one's communication effectiveness. The way one sees oneself can influence the way they see their social surroundings. Only after one become aware of oneself can they be aware of their physical and social surroundings, which will allow one to perceive situations and people with a truer idea and create a more positive outcome.
Self-concept can be described as how a person views themselves. There is a variety of factors that impact a person’s self-concept but the biggest impact comes from self-esteem. Self-esteem is much like self-concept the only difference is the addition of emotions. For example say an individual likes a brand they are aware that they enjoy the brand so that’s self-concept. The influences that have shaped my identity are my parents, who always taught me right from wrong. Who were always there for me even though I may have disappointed them at one or more times in my life. Although, I had to quit college after only attending one semester because I got pregnant my parents were still there to guide me and support my decisions.
A reflection of the self is an important tool to use to figure out whether or not your self-concept provides you with a positive self-esteem. First ask yourself, ‘who am I?’ and once you figure that out, determine if your perception of yourself is a positive one.
