Literacy Narrative
When I was younger, I wasn’t much of a reader. I learned to read at a young age, but I never stuck with it to help myself improve my skills. As I got older, reading continued to be a struggle for me, especially when I entered the fifth grade. Being brutally honest with myself, I know I didn’t enjoy reading, which is why I didn’t give it my attention. However, as I moved up in grades enjoying a book wasn’t so much of the issue anymore, it was more of the fact that I wasn’t good at it. It is really difficult to understand what you are reading when you are struggling with reading. When I read I would become lost in the words and not be able to pick out any of the important information. This fact made me dislike reading even more. The readings that I was getting assigned in class were getting very difficult for me, and I wasn’t interested in any of the stories. Luckily, I came across a teacher who was supportive and understanding of my struggles when it came to reading and writing. Mrs. Stilber opened doors for me and helped me get a better understanding of reading. She would get me all of my books on audio and would print off summaries for each book I read, and we would go over each chapter the next day. Her hard work and dedication made me realize I wasn’t alone on this journey.
I did my job by becoming a better reader by increasing my reading rate and by being more coherent. What I did know is how important reading was, and that I needed to push myself harder than I ever thought. I give credit to readers who struggle and make it a personal goal to improve their own skills. Speaking from experience, I know that it’s hard to excel in something that you find
