Recommended: How you believe you can make difference on teaching

In eighth grade, I moved from Wisconsin to Michigan, and through social media stayed connected to the people and events of my former school. In the fall of 2015, I learned that my fifth-grade teacher, Mr. Petrie, was diagnosed with lymphoma. After battling the disease for one year, his fellow staff and students re-routed the annual homecoming parade past his house to show their support as he fought for his life. Frail and emotional, he watched from his driveway. In an interview with the media he stated, “If my legacy ends tomorrow, today I know that these kids have put this forward, and they'll remember this for their lifetime." As it turned out, he passed away the next day – leaving a legacy that will always be remembered. His words have inspired my question for this essay, “What do you want your legacy to be?” …show more content…

Legacies of teachers, volunteers, and other leaders in our small communities are remembered for inspiring others to mentor youth, to help others that are less fortunate, or to improve our neighborhoods. For me, as a Battalion Commander for the JROTC Aurora Battalion, I desire to leave a legacy of improving the program and inspiring others to be good citizens. As a percussion section leader, I wish to leave a legacy of being a successful musician that inspired students to join band. Additionally, as a student that advocated for the revival of the FIRST Robotics team at my school, I want to leave a legacy of providing an activity for those interested in STEM careers and inspiring them to develop strong work habits and to become valuable team players and effective problem
