The decision to begin this journey to become a nurse educator was an easy one, but like any other undertaken the process was not easy, but with determination and perseverance, I forged ahead with encouragement and cheers from various sources. It has truly been a privilege and an honor having the opportunity to have the support from faculty members and my cohorts. As we come to the conclusion of the program, I just want to say thank you to everyone, for all the support and encouragement. In order to accomplish my goal, I might have to be proficient in my role, therefore I will pursue a course that can teach me how to improve and excel in my role, and I can accomplish that by becoming credentialed as a Certified Nurse Educator (CNE), so I can serve as a leader and a role model (Gorski et al., 2015). The mission of the NLN is to promote excellence in the advanced specialty role of the academic nurse educator through the certified nurse educator as an advanced specialty role, because it acknowledges the role, skills, and abilities required to demonstrate excellence; reinforce the nurse educator competencies; and promote lifelong learning through professional development (Patterson & Krouse, 2015). For a nurse educator there are many avenues and resources to enhance one’s skill, improve upon teaching strategies and keep up with innovations. One key element of my plan is to associate myself with a nursing organization, for instance the NLN, where I can learn the core elements of the competencies and the dynamics of the dyad relationship of mentorship, which will assist me to develop confidence and become proficient in the nurse educator role (Patterson & Krouse, 2015). The initial task and key for my colleagues to embrace this change agent is to form a strategy for the implementation of change. The appropriate change theory to apply to this project will be Kurt Lewin’s change theory. The initial implementation of change involves unfreezing, the identification of the prevalence of chronic diseases in the community, and the mobilization of others to see the need for the change (Shirey, 2013). The unfreezing stage involves performing a gap analysis pointing out inconsistencies between the desired and current state of affairs, using statistical analysis of comparing the prevalence of chronic diseases in the community to national data (Shirey, 2013). The ongoing process for unfreezing should entails a sense of urgency, a solution is then elected, and then the formulation of a plan for implementation of the desired outcome ensues (Shirey, 2013). According to Shirey (2013), a successful change demands establishment of the driving forces in favor of the change and/or weakening the restraining forces. The moving or transitioning stage of Lewin’s theory deals with viewing the change as a process, at this stage individual react to the change and necessitates
The College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) is the governing body of all registered nurses in Ontario and is regulated. The CNO provides expectations and guidelines to follow, which need to be met by each Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) individually. As a nursing student, I am taught about the CNO and the importance of referring back to the guidelines while caring for patients. While gaining experiencing in the nursing field through my clinical settings, I have realized as a nursing student there are areas I need further development in. In this paper, I will address two of my learning needs and my goal for each. I will also discuss the plan I created in order to successfully meet my learning needs prior to becoming an RPN, and
I presume the role transition from academic nursing student to Graduate Nurse will be challenging and rewarding. In their findings, the researchers Doody, Tuohy & Deasy (2012) stated that for a successful transition NGNs need to be competent in a range of domains: interpersonal skills, managing workloads, providing health information, communication, and prioritising care delivery. Although I believe I am competent in the above specified areas, I am still not confident that I would get sufficient support in the hospital environment in terms of knowledge sharing, moral support and being given constructive feedback. Constructive criticism increases confidence in the work role and reduces stress in an individual (Doody, Tuohy & Deasy, 2012). In my previous professional placements I have been able to demonstrate my competency to work in the healthcare environment. I have received positive feedback from placement educators, buddy nurses and patients. Despite being competent in a range of the above areas NGNs may still face transition shock.
My transition into the nursing profession was a major achievement for I am able to use my acquired skills to contribute to the community. As a bedside nurse and a staff member of a large medical establishment, I had to learn how to deliver care to a population that is very diverse. In order for that care to be effective, I must assume the roles of a counselor, therapist, educator, advocate and most of all as an interpersonal facilitator.
In this paper I will discuss how preceptors and educational leaders have contributed to my nursing career and many others. The mentors who have the most influence on nurses are those that stick with the nurses and help give them the motivation they need to move through obstacles. In the first few paragraphs, I will discuss my personal experience with a mentor and the characteristics they possessed that were beneficial to me. Mentors have become a great influence in my career and many others. In the last section of this paper, I will discuss some of my personal experiences in example and support why I value the characteristics by referring back to peer reviewed articles. Preceptors are essential and irreplaceable in the nursing profession and in this paper will describe how they are active in every nurse’s life and profession.
Our course, Transition to Professional Nursing, is barely two weeks old and already I am being enlightened and challenged to expand my experience of nursing. I will attempt to explain my personal journey and experience thus far including how and why I got here, my beliefs about nursing and related values, and my visions for the future.
My journey to finally realizing of becoming a student in this RN Executive Program has been a long journey filled with excitement and disappointing periods. I 've started this quest in the Summer of 2015 and here I am, two years later, starting my first class in the program, Nursing 301.
The transition from student to a qualified nurse can be a stressful and overwhelming ex-perience for many newly qualified nurses. This opinion is widely upheld throughout the literature with Higgins et al (2010) maintaining that many of the problems experienced are due to lack of support during this initial transition and a period of preceptorship would be invaluable.
In five years, I hope to be a knowledgeable nurse, where I feel comfortable in the job I have acquired. I hope to be a critical care nurse working in the incentive care unit at a well-known hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. By five years, I will have received a certification in critical care and possibly other certifications. I also may be thinking about going back to school to become a family nurse practitioner within the five years. I can achieve these goals by becoming a dedicated nurse to my patients and continuing with my education throughout the five years.
Education for registered nurses provides significant benefits to the nursing career and therefore, it is imperative. As a registered nurse, education has influenced my practice at the hospital considerably. One of the major areas influenced by education is caring for patients. As a nurse, caring for patients is one of their primary responsibilities. I will need to keep assessing myself and setting new goals as the nursing profession and workplace are continuously changing. It will be necessary to be conversant with the environment before deciding how I will use my skills and experience to benefit myself and the society. I will keep scanning my surrounding environment to establish the most beneficial way to use my skills and experience.
Several years ago in 2008 the RWJF and the IOM collaborated for two years to discern the future needs of the nursing profession. Most importantly, the objective was to outline the critical actions needed to ensure nursing was ready to seamlessly move towards the future. This was no easy task as nurses work in such diverse settings such as outpatient areas, acute care settings, the community, and long term settings to name a few. Couple this with the fact that nurses have a variety of educational avenues such as the associates, diploma, or bachelor’s degree open to them to achieve the status of registered nurse (Institute of Medicine, 2010). All of this considered, the committee did design four key messages regarding the future of nursing as key in the transformation of health care as evidenced in their "Future of Nursing" report.
A career in nursing has always sounded like an extremely rewarding and beneficial profession. Nurses have the great opportunity to care for patients on a daily basis, nurses are responsible for helping patients maintain a long, healthy life. In this paper, I will discuss how I became interested in nursing, how my values relate to those of a nurse, and my goals pertaining to the nursing program.
More specifically, I wanted to increase my understanding concerning the role knowledge and experience have on nursing and the way in which nursing affects the community around it. For example, a day as a nurse is ever changing, from the patient supply to the randomness of patient situations and the choice of choosing how to approach those unfamiliar predicaments. Nursing would challenge me to think on my feet in a moment’s notice and thrive in diverse or educational opportunities, always adapting to new environments. Furthermore, nursing is one of those jobs appreciated by those too weak, defenseless, or sick to help themselves, where personable treatment and human interaction is needed. It takes one thing to be knowledgeable and experienced, but another thing entirely to apply emotions and feelings to treatment, such as intimate contact with others, or attentiveness and sensitivity to their needs.
