There are many skills that I need to improve on to be successful in school, but I am going to focus on three of them for now. My grammar has not always been a strong point in my writing. Although I do fairly well on my writing assignments, my English teachers have mentioned my grammatical errors in past assignments. My resources for improving my grammar were, Grammarbook.com, Writing-program.uchicago.edu, and “The Little Seagull Handbook.” I also have trouble with shyness, which affects me whenever I have to do presentations or speeches. Just the thought of giving a presentation makes me so nervous, that I have a hard time getting thru it. I get tongue tied, I struggle to remember what I’m supposed to be saying and I have trouble looking at …show more content…
I found three resources to help me improve my grammar. The first was the website www.writingprogram.uchicago.edu. It gave quick guides on grammar rules. One of the quick guides was “The Grammar Handbook,” which explained the rules for grammar. For example, I have trouble with clauses in sentences, so I read the advice the site gave me. It was helpful in a way, but I liked my next source better. It was www.Grammarbook.com which gives several different quizzes that can be taken to check and see how well ones grammar is. After taking a test one gets a better understanding of what was done wrong, to which it is then explained in a way to be very helpful. I tried several of the quizzes, one of which was titled “The Effective Writing Quiz” that had fifteen questions about proper use of grammar. I had trouble recognizing a dangling modifier; avoiding the use of there is, there are, it is, it was and so on; and using an active voice. Because of this, I will be able to recognize these problems in my future writing. The textbook “The Little Seagull Handbook” also helped me understand “wordy phrases.” I tend to get wordy in my writing and I am going to try not to do that anymore with the help of this book. The resources I used for my trouble with grammar were very helpful, and I hope it will show in my writing going …show more content…
I used the websites www.aresearchguide.com, and rwc.hunter.cuny.edu/reading-writing, and the Rockingham Community College English tutors. The first resource www.aresearchguide.com, was very helpful in making me see the steps needed to have a successful research paper. I learned that there are eight steps to writing an A+ paper: 1) choosing a topic, 2) finding information, 3) stating your thesis, 4) making a tentative outline, 5) organizing notes, 6) writing a first draft, 7) revising the outline, and 8) typing the final paper. The next source, www.hunter.cuny.edu, stated that the three elements to consider while writing were, who the writer is, who the reader is, and what is being written about. It was not much help in improving my organizational skills for now, but has the potential of being helpful in the future. My last resource is the writing tutors here at RCC. I have used this resource a couple of times already and it was a big help. It helped me clear up some of my punctuation, and wording problems. All three of the resources I used for improving my organizational skills were helpful, and I intend on using them on all of my future
This video was about improving your writing through avoiding contractions, be-verbs and low academic words. It was very helpful because the woman showed examples and corrected the sentences on the spot as she explained them. It was clear and concise.
This paper will show how the Spaniards mapped their conceptions of power and sexual relationships onto the natives. It will address this conception by carefully analyzing the presence of hermaphrodites in Theodore de Bry's copper etchings. By visualizing the berdache through the eyes of the Spaniard, the concept of sexualizing the foreign natives is revealed to be thickly imbedded in their own gender norms.
My personal method of writing papers was very simple. I would spend some time just thinking about how I wanted the paper to be structured. I will admit that the first paragraph always took as long to write as the rest of essay. When I finally finished the essay I would read over it and run it through paper rater. When it came to the research paper I did almost all of my research before I ever started the paper. I would look up information as needed it from that point on.
The dichotomy between nature and culture is a topic which has been present for many years in the field of social science, but only in the more recent decade’s has it become important for anthropology. The 1970’s were a crucial time for this debate as it was the only real time we knew the difference between sex and gender, but now I aim to discuss how this certainty has come to an end, and we are now forced to question our own western ideas of sexuality and the body.
It is in my discovery that, something that was once an intimate and special part of a person’s life is turning into somewhat of a game for others. I do not mean to argue that everyone views sex as meaningless, but some people do, and this downplays sex and sexuality in human culture. An article written by Rachel Hills from TIME titled, “What Every Generation Gets Wrong About Sex,” examines the similarities in the sexual culture of the early 1900’s to the 21st century. Hill contends that in 1964, “[s]ex was no longer a source of consternation but a cause for celebration; its presence not what made a person morally suspect, but rather its absence.” Here she is agreeing that today, sex is seen as an
My writing process usually begins by me thinking of what I want to write about, whether it’s a reflective, narrative, argumentative-persuasive, compare and contrast, or process analysis paper/essay. Usual finding what I want to write about takes up most of my time. Once I figure that out, I think the this step is the most important to keep in mind while writing. Knowing who your audience is is key to having a successful paper. If you do not, then your paper will not have as big of an effect. This applies to any type of paper you write, and I learned that very quickly. Nest, I would write the rough draft of my paper, this rough draft would just be putting my ideas
Before the sexual revolution of the 1960’s throughout the 1980’s, sex was an exciting adventure, done between two persons that every individual looked forward to. It was not done loosely or lawlessly but as a way of expression ones love and affection. The issues of sex were discussed privately and women were taught to preserve their virginity until marriage.
The idea of ‘one-sex’ bodies (a form of thought in Ancient Greece) began to be replaced in the 18th century with the “biological differentiation between men and women” (Mottier, 33). While a gender hierarchy remained, male and female bodies were now seen as biologically and fundamentally different. With the changes of thought during this period, a biological model of sexuality also came about. In the 19th century, the concept of ‘sexual inversion’ became popular (Mottier, 38). Homosexuals were viewed as suffering from gender disorders; they were not criminals, but abnormal and in need of a cure (Mottier, 39). What do all of these developments have to do with sexual behaviors becoming known as sexual identities?
In the article, “Current Developments in Research on the Teaching of Grammar” by Hossein Nassaji and Sandra Fotos two main issues had been discussed. The first one is whether grammar teaching make any differences to language learning where the questions raised are whether grammar should be taught or not. The second issue is what kinds of grammar teaching have been suggested to facilitate second language learning. If grammar should be taught, how much and should it be implicit or explicit grammar teaching? Lastly, the article discussed on the current approaches to grammar teaching in which formal instruction can be integrated with communicative activities which are processing instruction, interactional feedback, textual enhancement, task-based
After some of my research most sites do encourage Wikipedia as a starting point but be careful due to the fact that anyone can edit the information on Wikipedia.... ... middle of paper ... ... Finally, I will also find the writing reference library useful; this center offers so many tools to help you improve your writing and topics on different writing modes from thesis statements, resumes, to flyers and many more. It is almost a one-stop shop for all your writing needs.
Whenever it come to the research paper, I struggled tremendously. The topic for the paper was “How to do Good Research.” While brainstorming I began to get overwhelmed. I have never done a research paper before and I didn 't know where to start. This is where I can grow as a writer. Acquiring more knowledge on how to research accurately and correctly would be helpful. There is an abundance of information online, trying to sort through it all is mind-boggling. Learning how to correctly cite sources following APA guidelines would be beneficial as
Improving my communication skills has been a work in progress starting back in the early years of my life. I have always been my own worse critic. Usually beating myself down through interpersonal communication. Now as an adult I have made great improvements but still have trouble dealing with perception and self-image. Not being raised in an environment of positive reinforcement and poor communication in the workplace I have made it a point to change that trait in my own family and professional environment.
It is not uncommon to say that grammar instruction plays an important role in language teaching. Regarding the status and importance of grammar teaching, a variety of opinions have been made. Batstone (1994) states that “language without grammar would be chaotic: countless words without the indispensable guidelines for how they can be ordered and modified” (p. 4). More vividly, Wang (2010) makes two similes. She compares grammar to the frame of a house, which is a decisive factor to ensure the solidness of it. Additionally, she regards grammar as a walking stick, whose function is to help and support students to learn English. Thus, the nature of grammar instruction manifests its own significance as it helps students enhance their overall language proficiency by integrating grammar into other aspects of learning, like listening, speaking, reading and writing.
In order to understand contemporary society, we must understand sexuality. Since the early 1970s, sexuality and sexual knowledge have been new topics of academic research and are now included in academic study, like gender. Many theorists began by looking for the biological roots of sexual variations which in turn gave rise to a host of distinctions such as bisexuality, fetishism and transvestism (Weeks et at 2003 p2). Also, an increase in Western sexual science produced even more new sexual categories and orientations including pansexual, asexual and sapiosexual. In the past, sexuality was a hidden feature of society; it was difficult to research because there was little information or cases to study available. Individuals were unlikely to speak of their sexuality if they were not heterosexual because it was seen as deviant and unnatural. In terms of the social construction of sexuality, Gagnon and Simon’s (2003 p5) ideas rethink the significance of the sexual in society. They argue that sexuality might be socially malleable. This suggests sexuality is shaped within culture and meanings are created from socio-sexual scripts. Gagnon and Simon describe three types of scripting which are the cultural/historical, the social/interactive and the personal/intra-psychic. These scripts demonstrate how sexualities can be understood as less biological and more cultural, historical and social. Because scripts vary in any particular culture and change throughout history, as does sexuality. An emphasis on society shaping sexuality rather than sexuality shaping society gives rise to ideas of the making and construction of sexualities. By arguing that sexuality is linked directly to society, it is assumed that relations of power and differentiated traditions have strong influence and that complex social forces are highly significant. Non-western societies regard heterosexuality as an ideal trait however accept that homosexual
There is a certain level of humility involved in teaching and being a student. Providing students with the confidence to ask questions is important. This means making sure the appropriate tone is taken when presenting fact and answering questions. Teaching grammar only works if there is open communication between teacher and student. There will be questions because grammar and language can be messy. It is important for teacher to remember that there is no correct way to teach grammar and students should know that there it is okay to let the teacher know when they do not understand
