Everyone sees the future in a different way; some see greater technological advances while others might see a more peaceful mankind. This indecisiveness leads to the ongoing debate as to whether or not this generation, Generation Y, has a role in America’s future. Considering our teenagers and children are the adults of tomorrow, I would argue that, in fact, they do have an impact. Every new generation has a role in the future of our country, as they fill the gaps of other people that can’t work anymore or have passed away. It just becomes a matter of how we use this power to impact society. Although the generation is very capable of producing great leaders, politicians, and a hands-on community, we cannot predict how those will choose to fill the gaps.
Each generation leaves an impression on our future, despite whether it is a positive impression or a negative one. This lasting impression is often referred to as generational potency. By obtaining new tools and opportunities from the mistakes and triumphs of those who came before them, every generation tries to make themselves heard. Therefore, the concept of generational potency is something that largely exists in our great nation. As Tamara Erickson said, “The truth is, without even trying, you will bring fresh perspectives to work because many of the ways you approach problems are different from the way it has always been done” (Erickson, 7). Everyone has a different outlook obtained from the knowledge you gain from past experiences and influences. For, we would be foolish to discard the wisdom and experience of those who came before us. In conclusion, each generation is presented with the opportunity to impact the future of America. With the chance to influence the whole world, it is our duty to step up, voice our opinions and make changes, because we are the future. Taking a back seat in the matter not only limits the possibilities presented to us, but every generation following as well.

In the article “Why Your Office Needs More Bratty Millennials”, the author Emily Matchar expresses a variety of reasons why the new generation in the workforce (millennials) needs to have their voices heard. She uses different terms to discuss this generation of workers, including Generation Y, another common name for millennials. Matchar’s exposition of why millennials are changing the workplace is broken down into specific points. She references the declining job market and why, due to circumstance, it is hard for millennials to get jobs as it is. Moreover, millennials are now pushing for a “customizable” workplace, such as being able to set their own hours.
Since both authors can relate to both age groups, they have written this article to describe the reasons behind Gen Y’s characteristics and allow older generations a chance to understand their younger counterparts. The article is written not towards Gen Y but instead is written for their critics. Since the article allows readers inside the lives of Gen Y members, it is directed at people who do not already understand this generation and all it has to offer to the world. It seems to be that the previous generation always picks on the new one. It’s something that’s been going on for decades, with the cry of “When I was your age!” at the tip of every adult’s tongue when they see the slightest bit of laziness or incompetence. In reality, each new generation brings waves of progress and innovation, built on top of the old. In this respect, it’s because every generation has the duty to do better than the last. Each generation needs to be bigger, greater, and bolder but this proves to be a challenge after countless centuries of people accomplishing the very same task. However, this problem can be simply solved by breaking the components down into the individual level. People just need to stay true to themselves and the rest will follow. Of course as Andrew Solomon 's Son and Lelie Bell’s Hard to Get demonstrate, creating an identity is much easier said than done. People have an obligation to be better than the previous generation and accomplish this by discovering who they are and then staying true to themselves.

Time management has become a persistent issue for people in the United States because of the lack of flexibility in the workforce. Work is taking over people’s lives. The current generation of workers tend not to demand because of the fear of unemployment; jobs are scarce these days. Generation Y workers have shown that they will not accept today’s hierarchical workplace, on the contrary, they will begin to change the workplace to their likings.
The American Dream exists but is now harder to achieve and unfortunately, the defining challenge of this generation is definitely division. We are not a generation of diminished expectations. For years the rise in technological use has affected people’s views on the younger generation. The idleness and conflicts of some have set up a stereotype for all. Students in today’s generation are constantly fighting, voicing their opinion against injustices, and looking for solutions.

During Generation Xers formative years, “investigations called into question many major organizations including the U.S. presidency, military, organized religion, and corporations” (Fore, 2013). As a result, this generation generally had little confidence in institutions and instead placed more faith in themselves. At home, Generation Xers became “‘latchkey children’”, who came home from school without a parent or adult supervision, and their mothers now worked outside the home. They were responsible for themselves, and often became dependent on video games and television sets, which resulted in them being characterized as “independent and resourceful” (Fore, 2013). At work, Generation Xers relied on themselves and their peers to accomplish goals, and did not put much hope in companies or organizations. Unlike Veterans, Generation Xers disliked traditional hierarchy, challenged authority, and expected their leaders to demonstrate competence and fairness, as well as embrace a participative and diverse workplace (Fore, 2013). There are many generations in society such as Traditionalist, Baby Boomer, Generation X, Y, and Z. Generation Z is the youngest generation in the list. However, in any work place, Generation Y, which is known as an Echo Boomers or Millenniums, is the youngest. No one knows how it emerged, but it began in 1998 and ended in 2006. The people in this era were born between 1977 and 1994, which is my generation. In the United States, there are seventy one million Generation Y-ers, which takes up the largest part of population. Unlike other generations, Generation Y has very outstanding abilities and environments to success. Those abilities and characteristics are efficient in business and companies. Also, Generation Y’s remarkable characteristics affect their social lives a lot. The Generation Y is very family centric, and able to catch up the trends. Their general cultures are pop-music, iPods, social websites, like Facebook and Twitter, and anything that relates to technology. In principle, Generation Y-ers are optimistic, social, and have high self-esteem. Those characteristics bring many pros and cons to hire them. Pros are general mostly, but cons are not true mostly because of misconceptions.
Parents of the individuals in Generation Y are according to Rosie Evans (n.d.) “subconsciously trying to cover up their guilt over the state of the economy by lifting their children’s financial burdens.” Our social lives in some ways are very positive and many of us can balance a good social life. On the other hand, some of us don’t have a very good balance and our social lives can come between our families, education, and finances.
