The Technology Savy Dusters On February 8th I did my first school visit to Holdridge High School. My first impressions of the school varied. On the outside and inside the school looks very clean and up to date, which is a great thing. The one thing that I found alarming was that the school did not have a buzz in system. They just had the doors unlocked and you had to continue around a corner until you hit the office. I visited an independent art class, which had various grade levels. The classroom management was very casual since it was independent art class. Even though it was independent work the teacher motivated the students to pay attention and do their work to the best of their ability. He was always present if the students had any questions or if they needed supplies. The teacher also did a nice job of redirecting students who got off task by talking to much. He treated the students very maturely and they took ownership for their actions. I was not surprised by this statistic due to the fact that Holdridge is a smaller town with a heavy white population. The principal said that the school is pretty much split 50/50 female and male. In the art class there were a lot more females than males. The art teacher even said that more females take art classes than males but that they are working on getting more males involved. The teacher met the students needs by making sure each student had the right materials and if they needed more he wrote it down and said he would have it by tomorrow. The teacher truly wanted each student to be successful in this class. Another amazing thing is that they talked about how they cater to lots of students with various disabilities, which is very important for schools to do. In conclusion, my first impression was wrong, the classroom was not some kind of battlefield of teacher and student casualties. The students were not a lost cause that I imagine them to be. The students were well mannered and just wanted to be treated with respect. The classroom management was impeccable and astounding. It goes to show that although you may think you know a group of students you can be very mistaken.
As I opened the doors to Lynn Gross Discovery School P.S. 17Q. I felt the butterflies in my stomach. It was the first day of school in America for me and had a bad feeling. My mom, my dad, my sister, Monica and I step inside the school. I looked inside the enormous hallway and the walls covered with artwork and pictures. My dad commanded my sister, Monica and I “I have to go to the office and do something. You two sit down on the benches and wait with your mom.” Monica and I agreed and said, “Okay.’’ I felt the clock ticking by and I wished for the world to stop turning. I waited and waited and waited. Finally, I decided to ask my mom something. “Mom, do you know how to say I don’t know how to speak English in English?” I asked her in Russian. She told me how and I tried to remember. I repeated the words over and over again like a singer trying to memorize the lyrics to a song, until my dad finally came out the office. My dad told us “You are now officially students of P.S.157. Now it time to go to your classrooms” in Russian.
Coming from a bully filled middle school where all anyone wanted to do was get high and have sex, going into a different high school with different people was not that hard. Going into middle school was one hundred times harder than going into high school. The people at ACIT were so welcoming and nothing like William Davies Middle School. The people here had their own personalities which I enjoyed the most. No one followed a crowd and did what they thought was “cool” like in my old school. ACIT was just as I expected it; a normal highschool with talented kids in different types of academies. I expected it to be a little more strict and proper than other school, which it was a little but not as extreme as I though. This school still has the normal highschool feel, despite what everyone else thinks outside this school district.
In my twelve years of teaching experience, one thing that most of my colleagues have struggled with at some point in their career has been classroom management. Classroom management is one many keys to instructional success. Unfortunately, many have left the teaching field due to lack of knowledge of classroom management best practices.

And this is the moment you can choose to make everything new. Right now." Over the course of my school years, it has been an exciting and shocking experience. These experiences have been an enjoyable journey from my elementary to middle school years. However, after several years the end of my middle school adventure is coming to a close. Soon my new journey will start as a freshman. Eight grade will surely be one of my most memorable years. It has been an absolute wonderful one hundred eighty days, and I will miss some of the aspects of eight grade—but certainly not all of it.
Classroom management has the largest effect on student achievement, so students cannot learn in poorly managed classroom. The teacher was happy and cheerful to all the students. She never had to yell at the students for doing wrong or doing badly on work. She gave praise to the students for doing well. Even when the students got off track from the question she ask. She would just say that was interesting and go back to the question she started with. All the students were exited to answer question with their hands swing in the air. When I first got to the classroom the desks were in groups and later were moved into rows. To cut down on some of the talking between the students. All eyes were on the teacher when she talked waiting in anticipation. The class was well organized and everything was in placed. The students had their own lockers in the classroom. They had time before class started and before lunch to get out what they might need for the day. The teacher keeps control of the classroom. They also had a set time for the subjects everyday. The main emphases of the classroom were on reading, writing, and math. All homework assignments were written on the board for all the students know what is do the next day. Students had homework folders to take home, so their parents know how their child was doing in school and had to sign the folder and return it.
Classroom management is a key element to establish a successful learning environment in any classroom. An effective classroom management plan creates a positive learning environment. Classroom management is affected by the characteristics of the students and their behavior. Students’ behavior is influenced by their age, academic abilities, goals, interests, and home backgrounds (Evertson, Emmer, and Worsham, 2006). Teachers need a diverse array of classroom management skills to facilitate learning. A classroom with a proper management plan will spend less time in disciplining and more time in learning. Students in effectively managed classrooms know and follow clearly defined rules and routines. A classroom management plan should provide for several important factors that influence proper discipline in the classroom (Edwards, 2004).
A first day at a new school can always be scary and nerve wrecking. Starting a new school can seem as if making new friends will be almost impossible. In the end a new school calls for new experiences and new friends.
I thought that the teachers did a nice job with their classroom set up. I felt like I could have kept myself busy all day just by looking at the walls and seeing the pictures of presidents and famous historic quotes by famous people of our nations past. One thing I really enjoyed was the time the teachers allotted me at the end of each class to reflect to the class. Not only throughout my past middle school, and high school experiences but also, and most importantly, my current college experiences, the temptations that I have had to endure have definitely been rewarding.
