Have you ever heard of a family crest? If you have not, a family crest is a list of symbols that represent you or your family. There is a variety of different crests out there and if you can believe it or not, you probably have one. These are very symbolic to your family heritage and beliefs. Three symbols that represent my family crest is a cross, a red-tailed hawk, and a bow and arrow. One symbol in which represents my family crest is a cross. A cross represents Christianity which is what my family believes in and we are very faithful in it. My family are christians and follow are beliefs through God. Christianity is also really common through the southern states which is where my family is from. Another symbol that represents my family
Another prevalent symbol to me is the idea of sin. In The Ministers Black Veil Hooper just suddenly one day shows up to church wearing a veil. At first the people are sort of angered by it. People soon start to flock to his congregation to view the spectacle, and go so far as to test their '"'courage'"' by seeing who will go and talk to him. I think that the veil could represent sin. In The Ministers Black Veil Hooper was either trying to hide his sin from the people so that they could not judge him, which is god"'"s job, or maybe he was trying to protecting his self from the sins of the people. In the end of The Ministers Black Veil Hooper dies, and sees his congregation all wearing black veils, which would probably hint that maybe it represented the sin in all of us. In The Birthmark Georgiana"'"s birthmark could represent, as some religions believe, the original sin which is bestowed on all by the '"'hand'"' of god. But, unlike Hooper, Georgiana could not help her markings.
A symbol is when the author uses an object in the story to represent a greater meaning. The quilt is a symbol of the family heritage that can only be appreciated by certain people. It symbolizes a long line of relatives. As you pick up a quilt and look at it, it has several pieces of cloth that are sowed together. The Grandmother made the quilt by hand, which makes it very special.
"Meanings of the Swastika Symbol." Theosophy Northwest. The Theosophical Society., n.d. Web. 26 Jan. 2014.
The swastika, or twisted cross, is an ancient symbol that architects have found on pottery and coins dating back as far as 1000 BC (Rosenberg). Cultures used the swastika to represent life, sun, power, strength, and good luck (Rosenberg). The swastika was used by many cultures around the world, but th...
This symbol represents the notion that freedom should be free flowing and should not be interrupted other than for the reasons that arose in the constitution. This is because men are born free and neither religion nor social grounds should be reason enough to deny that freedom. When the founding fathers embedded freedom into the constitution, they intended it to be passed on to generations after generations for eternity through the. The national freedom party seeks to restore the same vision by ensuring that the basic human inheritance, individual freedom, is protected for generations to come. This mandate resonates with the wishes of many Americans (Saad, 2013).
My crusader shield has four sections that represent my family, home, allegiance, and religion if I were a Crusader. In the top left of my shield is a leopard which represents my family. I used a leopard because leopards show agility and I always thought of my family as being agile when it comes to going into certain things. This leopard is has a pink and purple coat because it shows that my family can be very different from other families. I also thought that a purple and pink leopard would look pretty cool.
A Coat of Arms is the distinctive heraldic bearings or shield of a person, family, corporation, or country. Another word for Coat of Arms is “Heraldry.” Every family has their own different and unique Coat of Arms. Some may have the same surname, but may have originated in different places. It’s unique to their family and their family alone.
Religious symbols are aspects of all different religions that strengthen faith, promote certain beliefs, and represent the fundamentals of that specific religion. According to Furst’s article on the use of physical religious symbols, “As beings that are both body and spirit, humans use symbols in order to perceive and to grasp realities that are not empirical. As social beings, humans use symbols to communicate with others,” (p 2). But, there are many issues that arise when these symbols are involved and existing in the media, the state, our government, and the public. Mainly this is because symbols are truly powerful and represent controversies that come along with different religions. Furst also states that, “symbols play a powerful role in the transmission of the culture of human society,” (p 2). If religious symbols transmit culture into society, then people in our society are going to pay very close attention to what symbols are present...
Family crests are a fly way to represent your family and what they are good at or like to do.Crests have been around for hundreds of years. They have multiple uses: representation of your family, identifying the dead, and showing the history of your family.Three things on my family crest are a dog, a cross, and an arm.
The colors I chose on my coat of arms are silver/white, green, purple, yellow, and red. Silver or white means that your family has peace and sincerity. I try my best to make everything peaceful and I’m always sincere even when others are not. Green means there is hope, joy, and sometimes loyalty in your family.
Throughout the years, crests have represented people and families. Every picture is a symbol that tells something about that person or their heritage. For example, Carmel’s crest has many symbols that portray Carmel’s beliefs and values. I think my crest portrays me very well and some of the things I’m involved in at Carmel.
My life is very different. Seeing as my father is a born and raised Muslim from Iran, and my mother is a born and raised Christian from New Jersey, one could see how cultures could clash within a household. On the Persian side, my dad has taught me of the “Faravahar,” which is an ancient Persian symbol that translates to “forward-pulling force.” The “Faravahar” has six characteristics to it and according to Beyer (n.d) the characteristics include:
To begin family shields are relevant because their worth in the Medieval time period. As stated in Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia “ Coat of arms were borne by families, corporations, guilds, religious houses, inns of court, colleges, boroughs, cities and Kingdoms” ("Encyclopedia: Heraldry." Heraldry. N.p., n.d. Web. 25 Mar. 2014. .). This shows that in medieval times everyone bore some kind of crest. It has been recorded that family shield are used as images and emblems of status or rank. It is obvious that family shields are important, but they can be used for representation as well.
Therefore, if the group that makes the symbol or tradition changes their actions surrounding that tradition or symbol, then the meaning of the symbol or tradition will also change. One example of a symbol’s meaning changing that is well known by religious believers is the wooden cross. In the ancient Roman civilization large wooden crosses were used to hang criminals for crucifixion. They were something that you did not want to have anything to do with and definitely did not want to end up on. Today, the cross is a symbol of Jesus and religion, since Jesus, himself, was crucified on a cross. Another example of a tradition that has changed over time is celebrating Thanksgiving. In the 1700s, Thanksgiving was a celebration of the end of harvest and a time to give thanks for the yield of the crops. Now that grocery stores are in every town and city, people do not have to grow their own produce. Even though most people are not growing and harvesting their own produce, they still participate in Thanksgiving, either to give thanks for the blessings they have received over the year, or just to gather with family and eat. Although some traditions and symbols change over time, not all do, and those that do change take time to change, just like it takes time for the tradition to form in the first
Everyone seems to define family differently, however, the significance of family is the same. For you, family means everything. You can always count on your parents and siblings for help and love. Family is very valuable and important to you and should never be taken for granted. No one can deny that family is the foundation of our generation. A family is where we all start our life journey and helps us grow to be successful throughout our lives.
