Take guns, flags, and fish for examples. How do you interpret each of these? Some people view firearms as dangerous weapons used to assault and kill innocent people in school, churches, and movie theaters. Most of these people do not have the opportunities to utilize firearms for the positive purposes and base their opinion on guns off of how the major media outlets portray them. Many people have a completely different perception of guns. They see them as an expression of freedom, a means of protection, a means of hunting for their own food, and an exemplification of their Second Amendment rights. Flags are also a great example of split perceptions in light of our recent events at the University, Mississippi’s state flag in particular. Some may view the state flag as racist, but others view the flag as a symbol of state pride, southern culture, family heritage, and long-lasting tradition. Lastly, fish can have several different meanings. Depending on the person, fish are simply food from the grocery store, game to catch and eat, sport game to be caught and released, astrological prophecy, or a symbol of Jesus Christ. If someone were to survey a large group of students on what they thought of each of these things, the answers would be very similar and possibly have even more …show more content…
Therefore, if the group that makes the symbol or tradition changes their actions surrounding that tradition or symbol, then the meaning of the symbol or tradition will also change. One example of a symbol’s meaning changing that is well known by religious believers is the wooden cross. In the ancient Roman civilization large wooden crosses were used to hang criminals for crucifixion. They were something that you did not want to have anything to do with and definitely did not want to end up on. Today, the cross is a symbol of Jesus and religion, since Jesus, himself, was crucified on a cross. Another example of a tradition that has changed over time is celebrating Thanksgiving. In the 1700s, Thanksgiving was a celebration of the end of harvest and a time to give thanks for the yield of the crops. Now that grocery stores are in every town and city, people do not have to grow their own produce. Even though most people are not growing and harvesting their own produce, they still participate in Thanksgiving, either to give thanks for the blessings they have received over the year, or just to gather with family and eat. Although some traditions and symbols change over time, not all do, and those that do change take time to change, just like it takes time for the tradition to form in the first
Symbolism In "The Things They Carried" In Tim O'Brien's story "The Things They Carried" we see how O'Brien uses symbolism in order to indirectly give us a message and help us to connect to what the soldiers are thinking and feeling. During a war, soldiers tend to take with them items from home, kind of as a security blanket. The items they normally take with them tend to reveal certain characteristics of their personality. Henry Dobbins is the guy who loves to eat, so he made sure he took some extra food. Ted Lavender was the scaredy cat of the group, so he carried tranquilizers with him.
Controversy. A topic surrounded by a double-edged sword in which any argument made is instantly berated. However, if the topic is sustained with formidable evidence and eloquence—it draws the majority to it's favor. One such example of this is in the novel, Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo. It is an antiwar novel that sheds light upon the harrowing unjustly consequences of war through the main character, Joe Bonham. Trumbo is able to execute this claim perfectly through a distinct style composed of his eye-grabbing way of words, brilliant symbolism, and imagery.
Written by author Tim O’Brien after his own experience in Vietnam, “The Things They Carried” is a short story that introduces the reader to the experiences of soldiers away at war. O’Brien uses potent metaphors with a third person narrator to shape each character. In doing so, the reader is able to sympathize with the internal and external struggles the men endure. These symbolic comparisons often give even the smallest details great literary weight, due to their dual meanings. The symbolism in “The Things They Carried” guides the reader through the complex development of characters by establishing their humanity during the inhumane circumstance of war, articulating what the men need for emotional and spiritual survival, and by revealing the character’s psychological burdens.
In The Veldt, Ray Bradbury uses symbolism and repetition to foreshadow and reveal hidden messages that will help the reader better understand the story. Throughout his writing, important details are repeated to give hints of what is to come. Some argue that descriptive language is the most significant craft used. Although Bradbury does use a great deal of descriptive language, it doesn’t lead the reader to the moral of the story. Symbolism also plays a big part in The Veldt. It allows the reader to dig deeper into the story and recognize what certain objects represent.

The era of the Vietnam war was a very confusing time for the majority of the United States. Communism was rapidly spreading through developing countries around the world, and that created huge amounts of fear and tension for the US. Vietnam was one of those countries swinging toward adopting communist philosophies, and in fear of the domino effect the US military began a confusing involvement there for over a decade. As the war escalated many young citizens were drafted and forced to fight in Vietnam. Tim O’Brien, author of The Things They Carried, was one of these young men. The book is based on his experiences surrounding the pivotal war. Tim O 'Brien 's book, is full of symbols. Tim expertly uses symbolism to tell his real feelings
...ithdraw from the tradition because they do not know any other way. Can you imagine what life would be if there were no Christmas or Thanksgiving? For many cultures, tradition is the basis for their history. One example to this being the Hawaiian culture whose history was destroyed when they were forced to stop their ancient dances which told stories of their past. Adversely, tradition has played negative roles in society as well with the battle between the Muslims and Christians in many middle-eastern countries. Tradition plays many roles in today's society. Our goal should be to grasp the idea of what they really mean. We must not isolate ourselves to what we think we know, but instead allow ourselves to comprehend.
Guns and violence have some long lasting effects on not only the crime rate, but the rights that people have to own guns themselves. Even though the violence is a factor in why many believe that guns should be banned, guns should be allowed and not banned because they should be allowed because of the laws and the rights of citizens allow them there rights. The ethics and laws that occur with the current and enduring debates are another meaningful point. As Supreme Court Cases rage on about how a cities ban on handguns could break amendments, this is how the topic has gained from it (Hoxie 474). As crime statistics begin to rise there are many reasons that they need to work on the juvenile justice system (Collier 478). The other topic of the age could become a factor is another point that many think needs to be changed, as a 13 year old child could commit murder, they would not be sentenced as severely as an adult (Cohen 481). The ethic and laws play a huge effect on guns and violence because of the effects it has on crime, and the citizens themselves play a huge role on the society that they live in.

What is the importance of the gun? The gun is one of the most important tools in the defense of our nation. Guns are responsible for a lot of death and injuries, but these things were going on before the existence of the gun. Guns aren't the reason for the death and injuries, they are just a means to it. They are tools and an engineering marvel of our age. The gun has evolved from a simple weapon that caused limited destruction to the modern gun that is so fast and powerful it is capable of mass destruction. Through the evolution of the gun, it has become a political tool.
In the story “The Things They Carried”, Tim O’Brien displays through the characters the difficulty of being a soldier during war time. The setting of the story takes place during the Vietnam War in the 1970s. O’Brien based the story on the struggles that these soldiers have to go through during that time, both physically and emotionally. While O’Brien mentions all the heavy physical loads that the soldiers have to carry during the war, it is easy to tell that the emotional loads were heavier for them to carry; for example, fear, love, and loneliness. O’Brien shows that these thoughts of fear and loneliness could be more dangerous than the enemy, in this case the Vietnamese soldiers. Jimmy Cross, a character in the story, is a good example of
Symbolism is very important to “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien. Baggage is the main symbol of this story. Each man in this company carries a pack that usually “weighed between 12 and 18 pounds” (O’Brian 712). While they must carry their battle gear, they also must carry an emotional baggage that is equally as heavy. The emotional baggage begins as the longing for home and for loved ones. After witnessing the deaths of their company members, the men are scared, sad, and tired. Those emotions can bear a physical weight for the soldiers. Lieutenant Jimmy Cross carries the letters and the pebble from Martha with him in his pack. The letters and the pebble are symbols of hope for not only being able to return home safely, but also to return
For example, the debate on illegal immigration all too often is boiled down to two sides: build a wall, and legalize everyone. Do we really believe that these positions truly represent the thoughts of the majority of Americans? As this issue has become more sensationalized, we hear more of the claim, and less of the qualification. Many people join one of the extremes because they see no other option, thus power is retained in these radical ideas. Society has been unable to shake this sensationalization because of the hysteria that surrounds dissenting opinions.
Ross states that “even when different individuals understand each other and share a common identity, this does not signify that widely held meanings are necessarily acceptable to all, that all who define their shared identity behave in the same way, or that all hold it equally intensely” (Ross 138). Ross goes on to explain that “there are often intense intracultural differences and conflict over these matters so that meaning and identity, control over symbols and rituals, and the ability to impose one interpretation rather than another on a situation are frequently bitterly contes...
In today’s society, many people deal with the stereotypes media has placed upon a certain group of individuals as a whole, regardless of the person themselves. These particular groups of people are judged based on those stereotypes we see all the time. Until we have experienced those labels for ourselves, our emotions toward these stereotypes are just a mere fable of sympathy. We as people view things based on our own experiences, upbringing or even our backgrounds, but when the perspective of stereotypical stories is told from us, we tend to see things in a totally different way.
