Costa Coffee is a British multinational coffeehouse company and is the second largest coffeehouse chain in the world behind Starbucks and is the biggest in United Kingdom. Being a big fan of coffee has prompted me to select Costa Coffee as an interesting place to observe. I visited one of their branches in Oxford Road, Manchester twice, once on Thursday morning around ten to eleven o’clock, and once on Saturday afternoon around three to four o’clock. I picked these time to visit the shop as it is when most people are most likely to be having their breakfast and tea, so that I can observe the different types of customers and able to get a more representative analysis.
As I stepped into the shop, the aroma of roasted coffee wafted heavily through the shop. I walked to the till and get myself a cup of hot cappuccino. At the counter, I was attended by a polite young lady with a sweet smile plastered on her face. There were three other ladies and two men working at the shop. All of them were dressed up neatly in brown uniforms, with their hair neatly pulled back into a bun or ponytail for hygienic purposes. They had their job distributed equally. Costa Coffee is also offering Christmas drinks and seasonal coffee syrups in lovely packaging, which I think are ideal gifts for coffee lovers. Besides, the take out cups for Christmas are out and their design is more elegantly beautiful than ever. Not to be missed are the delicious-looking festive goodies like the caramel and rich chocolate Billionaire’s Tart, orange and cranberry muffin and Pigs in Blankets panini. Imported foreign blends and locally baked goods unite to create a perfect harmony of flavors from near and far. The Instagram-famous aspect of the restaurant appeals to social media butterflies with an affinity for art. Dynamic artwork, the friendly staff, and addicting flavors encourage recurrent visits.
Fish’s depiction of the process of buying a coffee now is an unfair stereotype, as not everyone has experienced what he describes. For example Fish states, “if you are patient and stay in line (no bathroom breaks), you get to put in your order,” (Fish). The bathroom comment was quite unnecessary because nobody gets bathroom breaks for long lines. This quote by Fish was illogical for his argument. Fish continues, stating that when one receives a coffee, the “real problem” is how the coffee accessories are placed. There are too many of them, Fish believes, and the order is random. This is not true for most coffee shops. Typically in coffee shops, the dairy is together, the sugars are neatly piled, the straws and napkins are stacked tidily. Of course, there are coffee shops now that are how Fish described. However, he only describes a percentage of coffee shops, not all of them. Fish should have made that clear in his argument. To continue, Fish writes about people fighting over the accessories and balancing coffee in one hand. This comment is almost theatrical in its description. The scene Fish depicts is rarely seen at coffee shops. Fish’s argument does not represent a realistic representation of all coffee shops. Fish does not state this, therefore being unreliable in his

Their actions are deliberate and exaggerated; they came into the store to buy one item, but that was not their purpose for being there. The ethnographic study took place at McDonalds’ shop, Leeds, local market in the afternoon of Monday, 17th January 2011. From away I could observe the huge logo of McDonalds. I stood at the entrance and stared at the shop for few seconds. The shop was far more elegant than the average McDonald’s. The interior has a minimal style with posh chairs, tables, black art deco fixtures, beautiful paintings and attractive lights and draperies. There were large windows so it was impossible for customers to see into the Harvey Nichols store. Also, outside were window boxed filled with flowers or greenery. I could hear some relaxing music. Focusing in on the meaning of what a coffee shop stands for, it is encompasses a third space that makes everyone feel welcomed when they walk inside the door of the coffee shop. Coffee shops have the environment to allow for common meeting spaces and bring the common folk together to become unified in a central location. The incident that occurred in Philadelphia should be a wake-up call to see that we need to focus not just on customer service, but on people care, whether the customer is buying something or just meeting a friend. There are potential risks that are seeping in on our franchise. For one, other coffee shops are gaining an increase in customers, which is a prominent example of why customer service scandals lead to a decrease in revenue.

During my environmental scan in which took place at the Starbucks on the corner of Fair and Newport across the street from vanguard, I noticed many things in which where never brought to my attention in prior stays and visits at Starbucks; such as the many social groups in which choose to have their meetings at Starbucks. With clear core values towards providing quality coffee, the best service, and atmosphere, Starbucks has enjoyed great success since it was founded 30 years ago. The company has being doing very well for last 11 years with 5% or more store sales increase, even with the rest economy still reeling from the post-9/11 recession. However recent research, conducted to Starbucks, have showed some concerns regarding company’s problem meeting customers’ expectations.
In countless homes and numerous cultures, drinking morning coffee is a staple routine. One can drink it alone at home, in a car en route to work or school, or stop at a coffee shop or café and enjoy it among other people. In developing my routine this year, I chose the latter practice. Every morning I arrive at a local coffee shop, smell the same aromas, order the same drink, sit in the same chair, and observe the same people who continue their morning customs as well. For several months now, my mornings have consisted of this, and every morning, I would mainly observe one person; an old man who has become somewhat of a fixture at this coffee shop and who has not changed his routine as far as I have witnessed. He is already there when I arrive every morning, sitting alone at the small table for two in the corner by the window, drinking his small cup of black coffee, and reading the newspaper. He is on a first-name basis with the workers and owner, and often chats with some of the other regulars. After months of polite smiles, quiet “good mornings”, and creating a background of this old man in my own mind, I finally get the courage to approach him. I start the conversation with him about our similar morning routine, and it gradually develops into a soft and informal interview.
The coffee shop I decided to do my observation was the well known Starbucks just a couple blocks away. The reason I chose this coffee shop was because of it 's style inside, it attracted me. For example, one side of the wall has a glass top, and the lower part of the wall, made of wood and painted in a bright red color, which was one thing that attracted me and stood out. Outside of the shop people can actually see through the glass wall and get to see what’s happening inside of the coffeeshop. By the entrance you see these two red ceiling lamps which were shaped in a flower bud and these two tall green plants. Once you were in, on the right of the shop there was a counter with food and things to put in your drinks such as milk, sugar, chocolate, etc and the colors and how the food was displayed and served was appealing to my eyes. Behind that counter there was a long table with different electronic devices plugged into the wall. On the middle of the those there is a fridge just for ice and when I turned to the other side and I noticed a big menu on the wall. Further more into the shop, there was an area filled with tables, chairs, and sofas. The tables were in different shapes, one was round and the others rectangular, also there was four bamboo baskets and I looked around and noticed that the walls in that area were decorated with paintings.
