(H) Survivors live through the most death-defying events that leave others wondering how they did it. (B) From being trapped in a canyon for days with little to drink, running from a cold-blooded killer, or escaping a country where public executions and famine are considered the norm, a survivor possesses many traits that guide them through tough times. (T) Dauntlessness, motivation, and resilience are key traits that are necessary to be a survivor.
(T) Primarily, dauntlessness counts for a great deal as to how a person can escape and live through a certain event. (E) This is shown in "My Escape From North Korea," when Lee illegally guides her family to China, but lied when questioned by a Chinese officer and said they were deaf and dumb people who she was taking care of, allowing her to cross the border of Laos. (E) For example, in "Trapped," Ralston explains, "I have nothing whatsoever to do. I have no life. There is nothing that gives even a slight hint that this awful stillness will break. But I can make it break. I can resume smashing the chockstone with the rock." (A) Ralston was on the verge of giving up, but he tried one more time. This eventually allowed him to conjure up the idea to rip his hand off, letting him escape. This resilience help him live. (E) In "My Escape From North Korea," Lee explained that her lowest point in her life was when her family was in jail and she had lost all hope until a stranger paid off the fine to get her family out. (A) This allowed her and her family to reunite in South Korea and live a normal life. Her ability to spring back from such a low point is astonishing, and many survivors carry this trait. (L) Resilience is an important trait that allows survivors to not give up
