I have participated in the following co-curricular activities: Student Council: I was elected by my classmates to be the student representative for my class on the Student Council at the Mother of God School in the third, fifth and eighth grades. Girl Scouts: I have been in Girl Scouts from the fourth grade to eighth grade. My troop has performed several service projects which include community improvement such as trash collection from the Potomac River, stuffing stockings filled with presents for the poor during Christmas, and creating jewelry to be sold in the school Christmas bazaar. I have also attended daily Girl Scout summer camps as well as an overnight week-long camp at Aquia Creek in Virginia. Music: I took piano classes for six years. I have been playing clarinet for my school band from the fourth grade to eighth grade. Our band has received high recognition the past two years at the spring band performance at St. John’s College High School. I volunteer in a lot of activities, especially considering I am a girl scout. We organize many drives for things such as food and sports equipment and everybody enjoys themselves while doing it. I volunteer at church sometimes, contributing my time to making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the hungry, instead of doing pointless things at home. Being a good person isn’t just about being kind to everyone around you. You have to put those great things about you into use and help your community. That’s what makes you a great choice for the National Junior Honor Society.
My favorite service project was my silver award for girl scouts. Before Jamie Lince, Faith Brown, and I did the silver award the hoophouse by the elementary school was very rundown. There were holes in the plastic, weeds in the beds, and the wood chips in the aisles were worn down. The hoophouse couldn’t be used. We wanted to fix that problem. First we applied for grants. I never knew how many steps or how much time this would take. It really taught me how to handle deadlines so things get turned in on time. It also taught me that there are people that want to support you, and you just need to find them. The two grants that we received were a Lowes grant for fifteen-hundred dollars and a seed grant from Van Atta’s. The second step was to get people to help weed out the beds so we could plant the seeds we got from the grant. This took a few hours and a lot of people from the community showed up to help. The Lowes grant was used for the plastic that goes on the outside of the hoophouse and new wood chips for the aisles in the hoophouse. We had to have the help of Mr. Montry who makes hoop house...
However, most of my volunteer work comes from outside of the school, such as; Pelotonia, Light the Night for leukemia and lymphoma, Franklin County Board of Developmental Disabilities, etc. For many of these organizations I have volunteered more than once. Volunteering at Light the Night has a story. For my 16th Birthday party, I wanted to have my friends and I volunteer for the day while having fun at night. So I had 7 boys and girls, along with me, volunteer for Light the Night, organized by me.
Where I learned how to become a leader through the leadership ensemble within the marching band. Where in my senior and fourth year of marching competitively, I became the Drum Major, and earned the Best Drum Major Award at the Roxbury Marching Band Classic Competition. From marching band I progressed into jazz music, where I became the lead alto saxophonist in the top jazz band at my school during my junior and senior year. I was also one of three saxophonists in the top band at my school. I picked up the clarinet, the flute, and the soprano saxophone on my way through high school, and have played all three as well in my performing ensembles. I played in the pit orchestra of the theater production of “All Shook Up”, and was the principal saxophonist at my high school. Too be short, I am very involved in all things music in the past and currently. Band and music have been a place for me to rely on, something that brings me joy when sad. Allows me to express myself through sounds and through instruments. It is truly a talent and a hobby that I hope to continue through college and through life because of the joy it brought me and creative outlet it was throughout my
With the help of the Me To We team at Queen Street Public School, I volunteered at a local food bank. The experience was quite educational and fascinating. We encouraged staff and students to donate non-perishable food items for the "We Scare Hunger" campaign. This was definitely a highlight of my grade five year because I felt very humble and warm-hearted by doing a simple act of kindness. In addition, I was chosen to participate in the "Intergenerational" program. This was created so that grade five students can learn more from the elders of the Burton Manor senior home. We had the privilege to learn about their history and interact with them through several educational and fun activities. If accepted, I will indeed join several clubs and teams to contribute my time and talents to make the school an exciting learning
My first experience that involved contribution to a community was in an organization known as girls as pearls. In this organization we participated in many volunteer activities, both domestic and global such as making dresses for girls in africa or volunteering at the samaritan ministry. Consequently, this early volunteerism experience influenced my involvement in the community as a high school student. I became involved in organizations such as key club, an organization focused in volunteerism. Additionally, I began to tutor middle school students and volunteering at the local church. Many of the volunteer activities that I have participate in involved children and this due to the reason that I want to be able to become a positive guide and role model for children. I want to contribute to their motivation of continuing their education and to reach for goals that they believe they can achieve. Every month we have a meeting and, by the end of the year we are expected to have thirty hours of community service accomplished. Both junior and senior year i have participated in the club Business Professionals of America were I held parliamentarian junior year and secretary senior year.
Soccer has always been my passion. I started to play when I was in second grade. I have played continuously and am now a captain of the Suttons Bay Lady Norsemen. We are a high school cooperative team consisting of players from Suttons Bay, Leland and Northport. This is our fourth year of existence and we worked hard to establish our team and its killer reputation. The part that I am most proud of is that I was among a group of girls that helped convince the Suttons Bay School Board that our high school should establish a girls' high school team. We asked to be put on the board's agenda and prepared a persuasive presentation outlining the reasons that girls at Suttons Bay High School deserved their own team. We knew that money was not available to fund the team, so we promised to find it ourselves. The Board approved our team in the spring of 1997. Our team members and parents spent long hours in fundraising to pay for our uniforms, equipment, transportation, referees and coaches.
