My Changemaker
When you have someone who mentors you, you are 46% less likely to use drugs, 27% less likely to become an alcoholic, 52% less likely to skip school, and 33% less likely to hit someone. Well, for me, those are all 100% because of my role model in my life. My big brother Jacob is my mentor and role model, and he has impacted my life in so many ways. He makes me a better student, he makes me laugh more, and makes me strive to be the best version of myself I can possibly be. Jacob Evan Martin is my changemaker.
My brother is incredible at putting a smile on someones face. When I was little, my other brother Sam(14), and Jake played hide and seek a lot. When Sam was counting, and Jake and I had to hide he quickly brought me to the couch in the basement and told me to slide between the pillows and the back of the couch. How was my 6 year old brain going to think of that? I ended up winning that round of hide and seek, plus the next one. So thanks, now I’m a champion. Just a couple months ago, probably in April, I came home from school and Jake was just walking in with a very serious face, and to me, was normal. But when he came in, he said to me, “Maggie go upstairs, in your room and throw your phone in the center of your room, face down, turned off.” I went upstairs like a speed demon, well, at least I think I was . . . I was on crutches. Now that I think about it, thanks Jake for making me going upstairs in crutches. I was sitting on my bed, and he comes up and I say, “Jacob . . . what’s happening?” He started yelling, “4 men in suits today come to my class today, and do you want to know who they are?!” I replied confused AND scared, “FBI?” By now I was freaking out okay? Don’t judge me. “No, the secret service....

...ily. This is worthy of attention because of how busy he can be, how much he has accomplished, and how much he still has to accomplish, and thinking about it makes me a better person. Probably one of my favorite things about Jake is the way he dressed everyday. He wears khaki pants, and a nice polo with gym shoes or dress shoes, and recently he has added a watch. The funny thing about that watch, is that he ordered it from China. Without Jacob’s silent motivation, I wouldn’t be who I am today.
I want to thank Jacob, for being my big brother. I also want to thank him for his funny jokes, his scary video games, him and I laughing until I’m about to pee myself, and making me a better student, and a superior version of myself. Jake as also changed me in ways I didn’t even know he could, and he is a true strong, admirable teenager. Jacob Evan Martin is my changemaker.
Threats made him great because they made him think about what he was going to do with his life if he did not behave, and his future didn't look so bright. Also, others not reacting when he misbehaved made Jake a greater person because he just wanted attention and when he didn't get it he stopped. Finally, discovering his passion made Jake great because it gave him joy and he started to relate to others and want to also give them happiness. To summarize, Jake went through a lot, his parents were in jail, he moved in with a new family, and was threatened to be locked up. Jake's life was an emotional roller coaster, and he could have sat around feeling sorry for himself. But instead, he helped the Applewhites, worked hard and tried to please others. He realized that he could change his future. He stepped up to the challenge and made a difference in his life. Jake became
The role of the mentor is to “protect the main character,” (Literary Devices, 4) and “through the wise advice and training of [the] mentor … the main character achieves success” (Literary Devices, 4). The mentor is as important to the story as the main character and is often a critical part of the hero accomplishing his quest. Some examples of the mentor are Yoda from Star Wars, Atticus from to Kill a Mockingbird, and Hagrid from the Harry Potter series. In many situations, the mentor is such an effective teacher because they themselves have at one point been in the hero's position. The are able to teach the hero how to defeat a dragon because they once conquered one themselves; they can help the hero overthrow the king because they once dethroned a ruler.
One day a few kids were walking down the road so I thought it would be cool if I told him to jump into a river, I even knew that he could swim, so he did. When he started to drown I realized that he could die so I jumped in and got him out. He forgot that I told him to do it and was thanking me for saving him.
Through serving in various leadership roles, I reignited my passion for mentoring and fostering lasting relationships. Particularly as a science teaching assistant, I became a leader and counselor by teaching classes, utilizing metaphors to explain complex science, and encouraging others by relating to their struggles. Also, I discovered the importance of truly being in the moment by being receptive to others’ unvoiced problems. Most notably, this position taught me that we can all learn something new from each other as I experienced before with Abby. All these benefits incited me to create a mentorship program on my college campus that pairs accomplished seniors with younger students. As someone who entered college feeling unprepared, I felt it beneficial for others in similar situations to have a role model whom they can trust for encouragement and
My brother Jared has been an important aspect of my life since I was born. Jared has a disease called Crohns and since we found out he had this disease it has been hard for me to understand why he has this disease and why God allowed him to have this disease. But through it all, it grew me closer to God. And my brother, who was the one who was dealing with the hardest thing, was an example to me and taught me how to live my life for Christ.
When he first introduces himself to the reader, Jake informs us that he is "talented, but lazy". We soon learn that he is not simply being overly self-critical; ...
In this case, my father and my other male relatives along with my mentors from the military were the models I was observing. It was a continuous and gradual process that didn’t take place instantly; it was an internal process that I may not have realized at an early stage of learning but grew to realize that by observing others I could make myself a better person.
Growing up, my siblings and I didn’t have a father-figure to look up to. I didn’t care. As I grew up I realized that I have a female role model in my life, which was my mother. My brother, however, didn’t have a male role model to show him the ropes of life.
That is the reason I was selected to be a mentor three consecutive years, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade. Every year, I get assign four students from different grade levels to help them improve academically and support them emotionally. Being a mentor has motivated me to be the best version of me; to offer a hand to those in need. Following my mother’s footsteps, I want to change and save lives through a medical career. I hope to hold that ability someday. I hope one day I become someone who inspires others to keep going, and to never give up until they accomplish their
My parents were very influential in the development of my story. They have been with me every step of the way through everything I have encountered throughout my life. “We will always be here for you no matter what, supporting you with everything in life. God will always be there for you and he will love you unconditionally and he will support you and guide you” (mom and dad). My youth leader has been very inspirational when talking to my youth group. “God is present in all of us, whether we choose to acknowledge him or not. God will always be there and you can talk to him about anything. He does not judge and will forever listen to you” (youth pastor). My grandmother was always playing music and loved to get dressed up for church and to spread God’s love. She made me excited to go to church and spread my faith. “Believing in God is important and it can help you with everything. God will always guide you in the right direction when you are unsure of where to go in life. Always remember that you have ...
Additionally, building this strong brother-to-sister relationship of trust with my own sisters, leads my focus on the members of my family, who has influenced my character more fully than anyone else. My Dad especially is probably my greatest example of all times whose character and integrity really touched me in various ways I could ever imagine. I really admired the way he led our family with great wisdom and counsel which helped me in my hard and difficult times. I only got to spend nineteen years of my life time with him due to his passing away while I was on my mission.
My brother again, gives me this fake smile that was to show that he never knew about the little room. I am very angry now, but I do not know what to do. I didn't want him to know that I knew that there was a little room behind the piano. I watch as he shoves the piano into the wall, my dream playhouse destroyed.
Everyone has that one person in their life has influenced to be who they are. Some weren’t meant to be looked up to, still somehow that person shaped them to be who they are today. It could be anyone, a friend, teacher, most of the time a parent. A parent that has influenced their child would be a hard parent, who disciplined and showed the real world to their kid, for what it really is. In hopes that their kid will survive the real world and pass on their knowledge to their kids and their children and so on.
One of my mentors was able to show me life outside of poverty. They showed me doors of possibilities and started a fire in my heart that would set a blaze of zeal. Going from a life of no direction or goals to having a vision for my life and wanting to purse a better life for my future has done a lot for me. It’s important to help everyone in their current situation because you never know what the outcome will be for that individual. Not everyone has the ability and drive to get out of their current situation. Sometime people don’t want to change from their current situation. For me it was simple I wanted more for myself, I’m glad I made the choice to do something about it. It’s had a lasting effect on my life. My wife and two girls will never know poverty because of my life decision that I made. Making sure I got out of that environment and wanting something better in
Everyone has had accomplishments in their life, and behind those accomplishments is someone who has had an impact on their life. My mother is my greatest influence for several reasons. She supports me, and the decisions I make, showed me that success comes from hard work, she inspires me and taught me to always believe in myself.
