World War One was a global conflict, mainly involving two sides: the Allies and the Central Powers. The Allies included France, Britain, and Russia and the Central Powers included Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. More countries became involved in the war as it progressed. World War One had many affects on the world. One of these effects was new music regarding people’s thoughts and experiences of the wars. The music of WW1 reflected the attitude and public feelings towards war by depicting encouragement, sadness, and a false sense of strength through the lyrics. In the song, “La Chanson de Craonne” (Song of Craonne) from France 1917, the decline of hope and spirit is very prominently portrayed. In the song, the singer and former soldier explains, “'Cause we've all been sentenced to die/We're the ones that they're sacrificing”. The singer clear depicts that the soldiers had lost their hope and incentive to fight. Soldiers no longer saw themselves as going out to win, with a larger chance of returning. The new outlook on the war was that men were sent out to die, their fate surely sealed. Additionally, it is shown that the soldiers were sacrificed, causing one to believe that there was never hope of return, just the expectation that one would go out, fight, and die. Since the war had been going on for so long with so little progress, this sadness and loss of hope was reflected in the music. The composer also proclaims, “It's all over now, we've had it for good/With this awful war”. This absolution of people’s spirits and hopes being dead and being done with the war shows how nearly everyone had given up and now hated the war. They call the war awful, showing how they truly despised what this war had become and how it had murdered and destroyed so many things and people that were important to them.
