The minimum education requirement to teach in a public setting is a bachelor’s degree in addition to a certification in every state you wish to teach in. For teaching at the university level, a doctoral diploma is required; you can’t even apply for a job without it (Dr. Michael Marcades). A degree in music theory, music conducting and/or a degree in conducting is generally preferred (Occupational Outlook Handbook). Ferguson’s website states that a music conductor must have mastery in at least one music instrument. Comprehensive knowledge of the history of music and its relationship to western civilization is useful. Knowledge of French, German, Italian, Latin, Russian and Spanish are highly desirable. Time management skills are necessary when there are limited rehearsals before a performance. “The ability to work collaboratively with management, boards, volunteers and members of the orchestra” is almost a necessity.” Effective public speaking skills” are required for the majority of performances (American …show more content…
Most people who decide to go into the conducting career, ignore the salary and focus on the fun. On average, music conductors make $47,350 annually. The lowest 10% earned less than $21,450 and the top 10% earned about $86,110. The median hourly pay for a conductor is $22, 77 (Occupational Outlook Handbook). High school teachers earned a median annual salary of $55,360(Education Portal). As stated by Dr. Michael Marcades, a benefit of being a conductor is “having the potential to do something that opens up a window in individuals”. From the wise words of Dr. Marcades, “realize, what you decide to do, you’re going to do for a very, very, very long time. Even if you like the paycheck but hate even a little bit of what you have to do, once you’ve done it for thirty years, the money isn’t going to be enough” are truly awe inspiring towards a benefit of the conducting perspective. Once the student is content with his future earnings, he will then know what he has to do for his future

The history of the Concert Band and Wind Ensemble will be reflected through a timeline of events, including an analysis of significant events, groups, composers, and advancements. When society envisions a Wind Ensemble, talented musicians, grand music halls, and difficult arrangements typically come to mind. However, a modern-day Wind Ensemble includes a variety of musicians, each with positive and negative aspects. In society today, music is greatly appreciated and accepted. It is considered an honor and a privilege to expose our ears to the music.
Conductors are seen as the leader of an orchestra or band and are given most if not all the credit for the music played. For such a simple task that consists of counting the beats, showing the mood for the music, and giving people cues to enter, conductors are as good as their orchestra or band, not by their talent. In this passage by Igor Stravinsky, Stravinsky discusses that the work the conductor puts in is negligible to the work the orchestra it self and that concerts should be about the complex qualities of the music played instead of how the conductor impacts the performance.
When asked to choose skills, I selected performing arts, problem solving, and speaking, all of which I would use in a career as a music educator. I also selected creativity, independence and prestige as the most important values to me. Again, these values are all applicable in a career in music education.
Jordan stated, “ My experience as a conducting teacher has prove to me that, until a student trusts themselves and their inner musical voice, virtually little progress is made(…)Musical creativity requires faith—almost blind faith in one’s ear and one’s inner musical voice” (7). Knowing thyself is a crucial part in conducting. With that being said, “Music aptitude does not continue to develop after age nine; rather, the aptitude level th...
Music is virtually everywhere we go, no matter if it is background noise in a coffee shop or singing along while shopping for groceries, we can find music somewhere. The event I attended was the Flint Symphony Orchestra on October 8, 2016. I have never attended a symphony before so I was excited to go, especially since I had invited my friend to attend with me. For this event, I was already informed by my teacher that the symphony will be formal so we needed to look the part since others will be dressed fancy. This made me curious how this event will turn out. Walking past the ticket area and through the doors to the lobby made me feel instantly memorized at how grand it was on the inside. I went downstairs and there were a vast
Johann Sebastian Bach was one of the most famous German composers of his time. All of his work was mostly during the baroque era. The baroque period was from 1600 to 1750 and it is known to be one of the most diverse musical periods as opposed to the other classical music eras. It was in this era that “included composer like Bach, Vivaldi and Handel, who pioneered new styles like the concerto and the sonata.”(Classic FM) Johann Sebastian was born in the midst of the Baroque era as he was born on March 31, 1685 in Thuringia, Germany. Johann came from a family of musicians, which is how he himself became one as well. It was his father who showed him how to play his first instrument, which was the violin. His father was also a well-known musician in his town as he “worked as the town musician in Eisenach.”(Johann Sebastian Bach) It is known that Johann Sebastian went to a school that taught him
To show his aggravation and irritation, Stravinsky uses the rhetorical device of comparison and contrast to convey his opinion of conductors. He compares the "great" conductors to "great" actors in that "[they] are unable to play anything but themselves". Moreover, being unable to adapt, they have to adapt the work to themselves, not themselves to the work, which is obviously offending to a notable composer such as Stravinsky. In addition, he attributes the egocentric view of the conductors to the attention of the public who make more of the conductor's gestures and appearance than the music quality. The public is then compared to the reviewers and critics, who also "habitually fall into the trap of describing a conductor's appearance rather than the way he makes the music sound." Furthermore, Stravinsky goes on to say, for a public that is incapable of listening, the conductor will tell them what to feel through his gestures. He notes that these people, the conductors, have a high incidence of "ego disease" which "grows like a the sun of a tropical weed under pandering public" illustrating that the conductors perform for and are inspired by th...
As a musician you are exposed to many different types of terminology, ideas, debates and concepts most people are not. There are Interest and topics that we find appealing like the different language that we use to communicate with each other, are very different from someone that is heavily invested in other activities likes sports or even knitting . With these differences we have formed our own social group. The definition of an music educator is a field that touches on all domains of learning, including the psychomotor domain, the cognitive domain, and, in particular and significant ways, the affective domain, including music appreciation and sensitivity In our community we strive to achieve the goals set in this definition and also to move forward in our advancement of music in the world
The job of a music supervisor is an incredibly difficult and important task that is often overlooked or not given proper funding. Seeing as music plays such an essential role in the mood and substance of visual media, the job of acquiring the music should be put at the forefront of a production, and yet, it is normally left to post-production, when money is thin. Music supervisors provide an important balance of maintaining the creative vision of the filmmaker and adhering to the usually low budget, a feat that is deserving of a higher rank of importance.
The Texas State University School of Music presented a beautiful piece called the, “Chamber Music for fall”, at the Performing Arts Center Recital Hall in San Marcos. This professional classical music concert was performed the evening of Wednesday, October 7th at 8 p.m. and was directed by Ian Davidson. Ian, who played the oboe, along with other performers (Daris Hale, bassoon; Ayren Huslig, harp; Kyung-Ae Lee, piano; Paula Bird, violin; Ames Asbell, viola; and Karla Hamelin, cello) presented this album of five pieces to bring great examples of classical music for the young audience of Texas State students to appreciate and experience the movement of this enlightenment period.
Becoming a music conductor is a very competitive task. A future conductor must have an early childhood musical experience. It might involve learning how to play music on an instrument. Then they must develop many types of skills involving a controlled behavior. They also have to job shadow a conductor that has a professional status. Next they must have a (“Masters degree in music theory, composition or conducting”). To be able to get inside at good music program is held with a strict audition (BLS). While in school they must develop purpose and operation of every musical instrument in the ensemble (Wisegeek).
From my viewpoint, I think the relationship between the conductor and the players is as an opportunist was using an individual to get access of something he needed. Throughout the entire concert, the players were ignoring the conductor. The only time the players make eyes contact with the conductor was at the beginning and when the other players needed to know when to join in. It is as they remember the conductor only when they need him. Although the role of the conductor was to guide the orchestra, the truth of the matter is that maybe the orchestra does not need a conductor. My favorite piece is Mozart’s Flute Concerto in G Major, K 313 because the ritornello completely brainwashed me. When I first stepped into the Samuel J. and Ethel Lefrak Concert Hall, I was impressed. Compared to my high school concert, the Lefrak Concert Hall was more professional and well designed. I think it has over 400 seats. Regarding the audience, there were different age groups of people attending the concert. I sat in the middle of the hall and I could hear the kids chitchatted in the back of the hall during the first concerto. Overall, I was amazed at how fast the flute soloist can play the notes and inhale normally at the same time. In conclusion, I think that it was a successful concert and the QC orchestra did a fantastic

Each person is specialized in a certain area and then at the end everyone comes together resulting in an amazing show. However, I was quite interested in a profession happening in the orchestra pit; specifically the violinists. Choir, I would say is relatable to this job because I get to accompanist the choir on the violin where a violin is
