To be a good educator a teacher must be culturally responsive. There will never be a classroom that does not contain some sort of diversity. Every student comes from a different economic and environmental background that shapes how they see the world and learn from it. Teachers need to be responsive to the ever changing groups of students that will walk through their door. Understanding Cogenerative dialogues, coteaching, cosmopolitanism, context, and content will assist all teachers to touch on the specific proficiencies that support a multicultural classroom. To coteach the educator would sit back and let the students lead the classroom. When covering race or language a teacher would be coteaching if the students were able to educate the class on their language or race. This could be an exercise that allows students to talk about themselves and where they come from. The teacher would be using the different cultures in the classroom to build a better community. This would open the doors for students to know more about their peers and for the teacher to know more about his or her students. The students would be allowed to demonstrate or educate others about their background in a variety of ways showing the teacher how they like to learn and present information. When a teacher shows context that means that all languages, cultures, religions, etc. are presented within the classroom. Allowing students to bring artifacts and knowledge about themselves to the classroom allows that group to come together and create lasting friendships. Students who know more about each other are more willing to open up and learn. Teachers who know more about their students are able to touch on their differences and create an open learning environment. Throughout history, there have been various perspectives of multicultural differences. As we go about our daily lives in the beautiful country of Canada which we have been blessed to live in, it has become normal to see a woman who wears the hijab walking down the street, or a Black family driving on the highway, or an Indian man wearing a suit and tie heading into the office. Canada’s cultural diversity is something which makes the country so special to live in, and instances where we see people of different cultures is increasing everyday. The different races effect how varied their backgrounds might be, and it will help the teacher engage a variety of ways to manage course material (Packard, 2017). The cultural diversity in society, which is reflected in schools, is forcing schools not to solely rely on content-centered curriculum, but to also incorporate student-centered lesson plans based on critique and inquiry. This requires multicultural education to a dominant part of the school system, not just an extra course or unit. Further, it demands that learning itself no longer be seen as obtaining knowledge but rather, education be seen as creating knowledge. Cultural Appropriation versus Multiculturalism In today's society, there are many different cultures that individuals identify with. Culture is very important to many people and is something that helps define who we are. When different cultures are respected and appreciated, it is a beautiful thing, it can bring individuals in society closer to one another. We spoke about the children in the classroom who have personalities and learning styles that are unique to them. Building a relationship with each child, gives her the opportunity to gain the necessary knowledge to create lesson plans that are relatable to their personalities and learning styles. Her association with the children impacts their feelings of safety and security which relates to their ability to interact and learn in the classroom.
