One way the textbook challenged my thinking was when it mentioned the fact their group leaders need to have knowledge different culture background. Its also challenged my thinking because I did not know that group leaders can be given lawsuits if they do not use due care and acts in good faith. In addition, this textbook also broadens my thinking because I did not know that in the United States the populations of prisoners were growing at such a fast pace that it was forcing prisons to run groups counseling. Also, I did not know that group counseling in prison is one of major therapeutic modalities. This broadens my think because I did not know that prison had group counseling or that it could be so therapeutic for prisoners. Moreover, this textbook also broadens my think because I did not know that group leader would show less enthusiasm to members in a mandatory group. One important concept to remember is that as a group leader you need to be prepared to deal with members of different race, religion, and sexual orientation. They also need to be able to understand different perspectives and values. Another concept to remember as a group leader can get involved with legal issues. These issues occur if the leader does not use due care and acts in good faith. Therefore, leaders should always practice within their limits and not be negligent to their specific duties. We need to be aware of the diversity in the classroom. Cultural diversity includes: bi-racial, adoptive, immigrant, gay, and step-families. It is a large majority of the students today even in my generation. Focusing on making a balanced curriculum that exposes the students to all of these different backgrounds is very important. I know that it is likely that a teacher will not be able to cater to every student, but it is important to involve each of them. There is a large percentage of students that have dropped out due to the lack of having a connection with the curriculum. The role in which I may find problematic is in diverting adverse and maladaptive interactions between group members. After analyzing my fears regarding group leadership, I have become aware of the many different techniques that are used in helping future counselors develop the skills they need to become a competent group leaders. Although task, psycho-educational, counseling, and psychotherapy groups require a different individual leadership style, there is one thing that they all require of a leader, the competence to administer and conduct the group in a manner that will be beneficial for all its members.
In conclusion, I have once again learned new information pertaining to issues and ethics in therapy, but more specifically group work, which prior to reading this chapter I really didn’t know too much about. I really found the idea of co-leadership interesting and all of the various issues when it comes to confidentiality. I had also never thought about the effect of termination without discussion within a group and how this could hurt other group members. I moreover liked the idea of the screening process and ideas to prepare for participants of group.
Growing up I have always taken on leadership roles. I was always the organizers of group projects and was team captain of my club and high school soccer team for several years. This past experience with leadership roles has lead to me developing several of valuable traits associated with leadership. For example, I have strong communication and problem solving skills, which have helped me in my past leadership positions and will continue to be an asset in the future. Although I have had experience in leadership roles in the past, I learned through this reading that there is room for a considerable amount of growth. One thing that was a valuable lesson for me was that leaders must be followed as well as follow others at times. I have always took control of situations and tried to lead others, but now I realize that sometimes even leaders need to take a back seat and let their followers take some control. I will employ this in the future in the clinical setting to ensure that all of my subordinates or colleagues feel they have control and power over the decisions being made. This is definitely an area I intend to grow in and utilize in the future to enhance my leadership abilities. Through the process of this class I have been able to reflect and analyze how I am as a leader as well as a co-leader in a group setting.
