The Move to Mars
It was really happening. Alex was finally moving to Mars. After years of research, testing and much more in the year 2030 scientist were finally able to make Mars habitable. Alex had graduated highschool about a year ago and after another year of training she was finally going to live on mars. It was very surreal for her.
Try not to cry, try not to cry, Alex thought to herself as she shook her long dark brown hair. She was a very petite girl, only about five foot four. The day had come to finally leave her home. Alex had lived in Iowa her entire life and now she was moving to a different planet no less.
“I'm really going to miss you. I hope you know that.” Alex's mom, Grace, cried.
“I’ll miss you too. But don't worry I have

For the rest of the day they explored the new and strange planet. They went down to the lava banks and were surprised to find a plant to look like a doughnut.
“Wow, do you think it's edible?” Lucas asked curiously
“Probably not. I mean this is Mars so only very few natural plants are edible. But I don't remember seeing this plant in training.” Alex respond with her eyebrows furrowed.
“We should take it to professor Gwenich” Lucas replied. Professor Gwenich was the head of the NASA biology department on mars
“ Ya but what if it's dangerous to touch? We should take her to the plant.”
“That would be a smart idea.”
“Of course it would.”
They contacted the professor and brought her down to the lava bank. There they inspected the plant thoroughly but cautiously.
“This is definitely a new plant here on Mars. I guess you two have discovered something. Congratulations!” Professor Gwenich told them happily.
Over the next ten years the couple got married and had a child all while studying this new plant.Eventually they learned that it cured a deadly virus only found on Mars. They were also put on the NASA biology team where they discovered and learned about more new plants. They lived happily ever after on
Tracy K. Smith’s “Life on Mars” is a collection of poetry dealing mainly in the search for a sense of purpose and the nature of people. The books is something of an elegy as a whole with many poems pertaining to death and the author’s struggle with the loss of her father. The poems are at once poignant and gentle in tone and leave questions than can only be answered in multiple readings. The book is segmented in four parts that travel through different topics and types of poetry. The mood ranges from passionate accounts of Orwellian politics to soft recollections of a lovers embrace; throughout the book Smith brings in references to pop culture, science, and technology that incorporate seamlessly with her words.
“I was so so sorry, deep in my heart I was sorry, but all your “sorrys” are gone when a person dies. She was gone. Gone. That’s why you have to say all your “sorrys” and “I love yous” while a person is living, because tomorrow isn’t promised.”
However sarcastic Alex’s thought when she said, “‘Oh my gosh... You really are the perfect man’’’ (Picoult 355) to Patrick, her comment still stands true. Alex found it in her to move on from her old stressful working life to a new life that has a balance between all the aspects, including work, children, partner, and simply enjoying

I definitely thought it was quite bizarre, and in the beginning I wasn’t too sure if I agreed with their theories of how the town came to be. Particularly that they are able to hide the secret city on Mars for so long and go in secret on a rocket to outer space seemed so far fetched for me to believe.
“Our horse chestnut [tree] is in full bloom, thickly covered with leaves and much more beautiful than last year.”
Alex’s dad, in the novel, ran away from his marriage with Alex’s 3rd Grade teacher. He was perhaps disappointed with Alex’s mom. Alex’s mom, as a result, was mad at his dad. Her frustration was justifiable but after completing the novel it became clear that the couple’s frustrations and disappointments were immediate and did not last for ever.

Stephen Hawkings agrees, "If the human race is to continue for another million years, we will have to boldly go where no one has gone before”. Going to Mars will ensure the safety of our species for much longer than if we stay on Earth.

It’s 10:30am and Janice, Alex’s mother, receives a phone call. “Hi Janice, this is Mrs. Smith calling with regards to Alex. Yes, he isn’t having a good day. He has been very disruptive this morning. We tried calling Alex’s older sister to calm him down, and to talk to him, but he wouldn’t calm down.
Humans can expect to face some major challenges on an expedition to Mars. It has been proven that humanity can travel in space for over two years. Cumulatively, Sergei Constantinovich Krikalev, a Russian cosmonaut, has spent over eight-hundred and three days in Earth orbit (Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, 2005). The expedition to Mars would require the crew to endure a six month journey to the planet, a year of living on the planet, and a six months journey back to Earth. Russian cosmonaut, Valery V. Polyakoz, clocking in at four-hundred and thirty-eight days for just one stay in Earth orbit, shows humanity is capable of a twelve month round trip to Mars (Schwirtz, 2009). Earth's orbit has provided some benefits to space exploration, like the magnetic field from cosmic radiation, and the proximity to Earth if an emergency were to arise (Jones, 2009). The further humans travel away from Earth the greater the risks become. The major risks to human health on a flight to Mars, living on Mars, and returning to Earth are: radiation exposure, biological problems induced by weightlessness, spacecraft malfunctions, and psychological problems brought on by isolation.
