At some point in your life have you ever had a sudden epiphany towards some

unfair circumstance? Like a mistrial that leads to the freedom of an obviously guilty convict, or a

a country that encourages an annual competition that involves the slaughter of innocent youth?

The Hunger Games” written by Suzanne Collins, describes this particular epiphany within a

character in her book known as Katniss Everdeen. Katniss throughout the book has an angry

and negative outlook on a powerful state known as “The Capitol” who run the country of Panem.

Katniss’s state of detest comes to change for the worst when she must participate in this annual

competition held by the Capitol, in which she is forced to murder other contestants who partake in

the same insane circumstance that Katniss herself must engage in. Although Katniss establishes

her dislike for the Capitol, there is one pivotal event that I believe changes her insight of the real

character of the capitol for the worst, and it is involved with the death of an ally who is named
Rue.

Early in the games, Katniss becomes unintentionally envolved and indebted to a little girl

known as Rue. Rue suggests a tactic of evasion that save’s the life of Katniss, and that also leads Ayala 2 her to escape from her enemys. Along with a few injurys that she quickly recovers from thanks to

a remedy of leaves that Rue is familiar with from her district. “ After a minute or so, Rue presses a

gloppy green wad of chewed leaves and spit on my knee.”Ohhh.” The sound comes out of my

mouth before I can stop it. It’s as if the leaves are actually leaching the pain right out of the

sting.” (Collins200). Katniss soon after becomes allies with Rue...

The reason why Rue’s death was the spark that turned Katniss’s almost passive perspective of the Capitol, into this dangerous conviction was the fact that she cared for Rue as if she was her little sister Prim. Unaware of how strong her feelings of Rue were before her death, Katniss lost somebody she cared for, which forces Katniss to realize that the real reason why Rue died is result of the Capitol forcing everyone in the Hunger Games to Kill one another. Katniss discovers who the real enemy is only from this vivid experience. Clearly a pivotal moment of change in perspective for Katniss Everdeen was the Death of Rue, which gives her true insight of where she stands in the eyes of the Capitol, and realization that they are the actual enemy in the Hunger Games.
