The focus of the Modernising Medical Careers going forward should therefore be on appropriate recruitment techniques which will produce the best hands. In each of the available positions the most suitable candidates should be selected with training and recruitment methods arranged to facilitate it. I therefore recommend appropriate recruitment techniques which will not be bedeviled by problems. Selection and recruitment techniques should go beyond putting up job adverts and interviews; they should be geared towards selecting the best candidates as well as developing training methods that facilitate this. Also credit should be given to a higher degree of research as equivalent to maybe a year of clinical training. This will improve the overall credibility of the Modernising Medical Careers. • There should be concerted efforts to improve the flexibility of training programmes in line with the standard NTN despite the career path selected by trainees. Emphasis should therefore be laid on research fellowship programmes which will ultimately improve the flexibility of the training programmes. • Efforts should be made to explore the exposure to academics in medical training to enhance the functioning of the Modernising Medical Careers. A model can be adopted which will include building partnerships with universities and trusts with the overall aim of increasing exposure in clinical training as well as exposing trainees to research in various specialties. • Academic training post appointments should recognize a need for a separate recruitment round for academic training posts, and also show a need for national adverts of academic training posts ensuring flexibility through partnerships with academic
