Modern Celebrity: A Hero? It's recurrently said that celebrities are not heroic by any means. You read long essays written by high school aged students on the many differences between a modern celebrity and someone who is a hero or heroine, and it seems to be a rare case to come across an article or paper on how a modern celebrity is capable of fitting the criteria of being stouthearted, noble, and a good person in general. The differences written in these papers always seem practically identical on why they're are far from heroes: “heroes help save lives, help others in need, don't care about money or Grammy awards, while celebrities are people who were put on a pedestal, save boredom, only care about themselves, and are complete attention seekers.” …show more content…
Now, although “hero” and “celebrity” have entirely different definitions, a modern celebrity can sometimes still fit the criteria of someone who is heroic. This does not refer to all modern celebrities of course, considering some really don't do anything at all – but remember, not every single celebrity is a Paris Hilton, Kim Kardashian, or Nicole “Snooki”
Who is a hero? In contemporary times, usage of the term has become somewhat of a cliché. Over the years, the term “hero” has become representative of a wide variety of individuals, each possessing differing traits. Some of the answers put forth by my colleagues (during our in-class discussion on heroism) as to whom they consider heroes pointed to celebrities, athletes, teachers and family members. Although the occupations differed, each of their heroes bore qualities that my classmates perceived as extraordinary, whether morally or physically. Nonetheless, Webster’s defines “hero” as “a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities.” Thus, it is worth considering that individuals become heroes relative to the situation with which they’re faced.
Who is a modern day hero? This question could have so many diverse answers, as everyone has a different perception of who a hero is, based on what values are significant to him/her. The modern day hero, is someone people should look up to and admire, as a person wishes that someday he/she could be just like that admired person. A hero will have those admired traits that go unseen. These traits could be as purely as acting as a genuine human being, to as difficult as in putting their life at risk to save someone else's. In this time and age, so many heroes will either go or choose to go unnoticed because they are not wealthy, unrecognizable, or not famous. Modern day heroes are people who should be recognized for their hard work and sacrifice.
Dictionaries’ definitions of the word hero are exceedingly vague. A standard dictionary limits the definition of a hero to, “a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities” (Dictionary.com). Heroes are people, not just men, who are generous, courageous, and take every event as part of the whole stream of life rather than as a critical moment. Humanity, endurance, and perseverance are other critical characteristics of a deserving candidate for such a title.
The dictionary definition of a hero is someone who is admired of their achievements or their noble qualities. To me, the definition of a hero is someone who helps people and is caring. In this world there are so many people mistaken for heroes. One example of a “hero” is O.J. Simpson. O.J was best known for being the running back of the Buffalo Bills and was nicknamed “The Juice”. Although he was a Heisman Trophy winner he was also a major suspect of a murder case involving his wife and her new boyfriend. Even though all the evidence was there he was found innocent and never went to jail. OJ Simpson was an amazing football player, but he should be judged by everything he does not just his achievements. One person I think is a hero in all realms is Walter Payton. A little after Simpson retired Walter came and played football for the Chicago Bears. Very quickly into his career he was given the nickname “Sweetness” which describes his personality in one word. Walter inspired his team and community. Every Christmas him and his wife helped the underprivileged children around the Chicago area. Walter said “I want to be the guy who is always remembered for giving his all whenever he was on the field”. I think that this quote shows his respectfulness of the sport and his kindness for others.
I know it would be plausible for me to be both a celebrity, then a hero, but I do not wish to receive the amount of attention celebrities get from the public. It is more simple to just be a private hero since people don’t constantly judge and question my actions and decisions. Moreover, this is why whenever I donate to a cause online, I always choose to remain anonymous since I believe I am making the donation to the cause, and not for myself. By this I mean, I don't care if others don’t know how much I donated or if I even donated in the first place. I find that in this world, most people will only donate to charities or feed the poor if they are able to post it on their social media feed to try and show off how generous and charitable they are. Whenever I witness something like this, it really ticks me off since while it is an admirable thing that they are donating and aiding the poor, their motive behind it is very deceiving and it just doesn’t sit well with me. Lastly, I expect that this ties into the field of work I am going into in the future. Right now, I am studying to become a doctor right now, and I presume it is more prudent to go into this field with the notion of being a hero rather than being a celebrity. This is mainly because, as previously mentioned, people who want to be celebrities may often do things of questionable moral character for money or fame, and this may affect their patients negatively. Meanwhile, heroes will presumably do what is right both morally and for the patient, which will lead to a long and healthy career in the medical field. This is why, if I had to choose between being a hero or a celebrity, I would choose the
So what defines one as a hero? Well, a definition of what a hero is “A person noted for special achievement in a particular field” (hero, n.d). Our concept of a hero alters drastically from person to
The term “Hero” has been in our civilization for centuries. On the surface, a hero is a person of honor, integrity, and the will to fight for what he or she believes in. Nearly every story that is told is centered around a character who in one way or another is a hero. They are a person whom the common people are supposed to strive to be; but does this icon truly exist?
Some definitions of heroes are people, who have noble qualities, and put the lives of others before their own life. They are expected to be reasonable and calm, during scary times, like when a shooting is going on, looking out for
According to google.com a hero is someone who “is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievments, or noble equalities.” (google.com). For example, superman , superman is an all time american classic modern hero who is admired for his courage and for saving earth multiple times from super villains. Another example of a hero is Beowulf. Beowulf was created around 1000 AD and was known far and wide throughout the lands for his selflessness, bravery, and courage .
Some people consider pop stars as heros, but I think I can change your mind with the Civil Rights Movement. This movement all began with Rosa Parks, when she got arrested for refusing to give up her bus seat to a white male, all in Alabama. Martin Luther King Jr. also had a major role in the CIvil Rights Movement just like Rosa did. He led memorable big peaceful protests, and stood his ground for freedom for African Americans. Because of Rosa getting arrested, people started the Movement by a bus boycott where people didn’t ride the bus for months. Since blacks and whites came together for freedom, they formed the National Association for Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). This organization amazingly became the leading
The definition and guidelines for using the term “hero” to describe a person can be as diverse as the land we live in, however, regardless of your cultural identity the shield of “hero” must be earned. It is defined as “a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities, is regarded as a model or ideal (Dictionary.com, 2014). In Classical Mythology, a hero is “a being of godlike prowess, a warrior of special strength, courage or ability” (Dictionary.com, 2014). This describes how we have portrayed our present day heroes, the pedestal that we put them on, after actions reflecting heroism, have been awarded the title. Difficult to earn, harder to retain, but forever remembered.
Hero, noun, meaning a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. (Google-dictionary, 2018). Is this all that it takes to be considered a hero? Andrew Jackson was the fifth president of the United States of America. He was one of the most controversial presidents in this nation’s history. He had a lot of supporters, as well as abundant enemies. Jackson was a self-made man and the first president who was not well-born. Before he was born, his father passed away, leaving his family in poverty. Jackson joined the militia at the young age of 13. He was captured by the British and got his head and hand sliced. Following the war, he pursued law. Due to this, he was able to be a planter with land and
Another great example of what a hero is not is in the video “The most inspirational video you will ever see Nick Vujicic” People who do not act are not heros. “Everyone obviously at the bottom of the slide is waiting for everyone to come down, and here I come down and the are freaking out.” The people at the pool may have been trying to help him, but really they are not realizing he can do things on his own. Heroes sometimes help others do good to and help others get through things as well, they don’t just have to do it for
You also don’t have to kill anyone, conquer foreign land, or risk your life to be a hero. Anyone who influences anyone else by saving or helping save his or her lives is a hero. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. changed the lives of millions of people by bringing justice to minorities. Mahatma Gandhi, one of the greatest heroes, led a nonviolent revolution to free his country.
I would walk into my local Shoppers Drug Mart to pick up some items. As soon as I stand in line to cash my items, low and behold I would see rows and rows of glossy magazines and they would have captions like “ Kate Middleton under attack by the royal family.” or “ Why did Jennifer and Ben Affleck break up.” I could hear the magazine whispering in my ears saying, “Raquel, come read me. You know you want to.”
