A current event that is stirring much controversy in the media is the story of Bruce now known as Caitlyn Jenner. This story is in the headlines for several reasons. Whether one agrees or disagrees with the subject is not the issue I will be discussing, however, I will address in this paper the debate whether Caitlyn Jenner deserves the title of Hero or not. To analyze this debate we must look at what constitutes a hero in today’s society, what does this individual represent, lastly, is it wrong to use the label of a hero for Caitlyn Jenner? Knowing these answers will hopefully result in a further definitive answer. So what defines one as a hero? Well, a definition of what a hero is “A person noted for special achievement in a particular field” (hero, n.d). Our concept of a hero alters drastically from person to …show more content…
In recent years, superhero movies have become extremely popular. We also have been living in a time of seemingly constant war. Our culture “from a sociological perspective, is composed of the beliefs, norms, behaviors, and products common to the members of a particular group.” may view Heroism in a similar fashion based off these events. No matter where one live in this world, war and conflict affect us in one way or another. In this, a hero is often described as somebody risking their own life, while fighting for the freedoms of others. So is Caitlyn Jenner a hero? By definition her actions fit the description, however, her actions are not comparable to a soldier in battle saving multiple lives while risking their own. Again, this definition of a hero surely won’t be held the same to the adversaries of that battle. The term hero actually applies to the perspective it’s who is using it. In the land of make believe, a superhero saving the world from an evil villain or alien race would affect the largest number of
How do you define a hero? Some may define a hero as someone with great courage and bravery; to others a hero might be a strong warrior and leader who wins battles; others may define a hero as one who uses his brain as much as his brawn to win. In Homer's epic poem, Odyssey, Odysseus is portrayed as a hero by every definition.
The word "hero" is so often used to describe people who overcome great difficulties and rise to the challenge that is set before them without even considering the overwhelming odds they are up against. In our culture, heroes are glorified in literature and in the media in various shapes and forms. However, I believe that many of the greatest heroes in our society never receive the credit that they deserve, much less fame or publicity. I believe that a hero is simply someone who stands up for what he/she believes in. A person does not have to rush into a burning building and save someone's life to be a hero. Someone who is a true friend can be a hero. A hero is someone who makes a difference in the lives of others simply by his/her presence. In Tim O'Brien's novel, The Things They Carried, the true heroes stand out in my mind as those who were true friends and fought for what they believed in. These men and women faced the atrocities of war on a daily basis, as explained by critic David R. Jarraway's essay, "'Excremental Assault' in Tim O'Brien: Trauma and Recovery in Vietnam War Literature" and by Vietnam Veteran Jim Carter. Yet these characters became heroes not by going to drastic measures to do something that would draw attention to themselves, but by being true to their own beliefs and by making a difference to the people around them.
Webster’s dictionary defines a hero as any man admired for his courage, qualities or exploits, especially in war. Some people attribute the term hero mostly to war. My personal definition of a hero is someone who takes a stand against evil or an unjust cause. The term hero can be applied to anyone, it isn’t necessary to save the world from explosion to be a hero. The act of standing up for a friend can also be called a heroic act.
A person who overcomes antagonistic and unnecessary issues in a mature and powering manor. That is the definition of a hero to me. Someone who is being hurt and sees others hurt from the actions and takes charge and does everything in his power to change it. Someone who puts others before themselves and acts in the most chivalrous way. The definition of a hero is different for everyone. Some one might think of a hero as someone who can lift a car and put it on their back, or gives a dying person their kidney. Yes all of those people are forms of hero’s. You can’t tell someone that they are not a hero just because they don’t change into a disguise in a telephone both or can throw lightning bolts from a cloud. Everyone is a hero in their own way.
A hero is defined as "someone admired for his bravery, great deeds or noble qualities". There are three categories to which all heroes can be classified into, one of which is the anti-hero genre.
Who is a hero? In contemporary times, usage of the term has become somewhat of a cliché. Over the years, the term “hero” has become representative of a wide variety of individuals, each possessing differing traits. Some of the answers put forth by my colleagues (during our in-class discussion on heroism) as to whom they consider heroes pointed to celebrities, athletes, teachers and family members. Although the occupations differed, each of their heroes bore qualities that my classmates perceived as extraordinary, whether morally or physically. Nonetheless, Webster’s defines “hero” as “a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities.” Thus, it is worth considering that individuals become heroes relative to the situation with which they’re faced.
In today’s contemporary world what is meant to be a hero is often mistaken by that portrayed in the media, through film and books. Far too often people think of heroes only as someone who risks there life to save another. But a hero is simply just someone who goes out of their way to do something for someone else and make a positive difference in their lives.
The definition of a hero can be defined as a person who sacrificed himself/herself and admired for their brave accomplishment. For example, the Iron First published from the Marvel Comics in the 1970s. However, not everyone can become a hero. In the book Hero of the Thousand Faces, Campbell shows what does it mean to be a hero. And in order to be a hero you need madness. The hero cannot
What is a hero? The word hero is defined as “a person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.” I believe this definition is wrong. I think a hero is a person – not specifically a man or woman—but a person in general who does what is right. That would mean that there are billions of heroes on our planet right? There is, but not all heroes are written up in the history books. Some heroes go unrecognized their entire lives. A hero could be your teacher. A hero could be you parents. A hero could be one of your friends who tries their hardest at doing what is right, even when it becomes difficult. The strange thing about a hero is, they make horrible mistakes that could cause harm. However, don’t we all? When some people picture a hero, they might think of a perfect person, but even the truest heroes make mistakes. We are humans, and it is in our nature to mess up at least 100 times a day. The ones who are heroes are the ones who recognize their mistakes, not the ones that try to hide them. They know they are not perfect. Th...
Thus, a hero is someone who makes exceptional decision, cedes for others, and does not ask for something in return.Even though many people consider heros to be famous people heros can be normal people , like firefighters, who sacrifice for other on a daily basis.Perhaps if we had more people who focus on doing what's good in life, then we could have more everyday heroes who are helping others all around the
The definition of a hero in my life, is someone who leads by example and serves as a positive role model. This person serves as someone that I look up to because of their positive attitude and great optimism. This person is also someone who is not selfish and cares about the well-being of people around him. The person who fits these characteristics is my grandpa, Drew Nieman.
Over time the definition of a hero has changed. Today’s hero can be defined as a person who is admired for having performed a brave and courageous act. The definition of a hero has had different meanings during different time periods. The classical hero, the medieval hero, the romantic hero, and the modern hero all have different characteristics that define them.
As much as it is difficult to understand, Caitlyn Jenner, is a women and, to many, she is a hero. She is
I Am Malala tells the inspiring story of Malala Yousafzai, an outspoken advocate for girls’ education from Pakistan. She wrote a blog chronicling life under the Taliban and spoke out in support of equal rights for women. At the age of 16, she was shot at point-blank range by a member of the Taliban for speaking out against their group and their twisted version of Islam. After this incident was popularized, Malala instantly became a beacon of hope for young girls and a symbol of the struggle for women’s rights.
The question "Should heroes be defined as people who say what they think when we ourselves lack the courage to say it?" implies that the typical hero of today can be defined in many ways. In other words, heroes don't always have to be people who have braved physical danger to defend a cause or to protect others. In my opinion, a heroes should be defined as people who stand up for what is right, and what is just. The evidence to support my claim is pervasive in the society and in every day life.
