ABSTRACT Long queues are experienced in retail stores as customers have to form a line at the checkout stand to make payment for merchandise purchased. High costs of operations are thus experienced due to the large number of employees needed to ensure smooth running of the business enterprise as a minimum of two employees are required on each counter to facilitate scanning, receiving payment and packing of the purchased goods. This research work seeks to address this problem by proposing a mobile self-checkout system using a combination of barcode scanning technology, mobile money integration and card swiping technology.
