Three years ago, a crowd of eager and oblivious Wal-Mart customers waited outside their local Wal-Mart on Black Friday—a feeling of egocentricity and craze radiated from the enormous mob. After the doors had been opened, and shoppers had shopped, a Wal-Mart employee was found dead—trampled by hundreds and thousands of ignorant consumers. The tragic story of this innocent Wal-Mart employee is one of the many modern examples of mob mentality, an essential concept of crowd psychology. Charles Mackay, Gustave Le Bon, and Sigmund Freud, the most prominent crowd psychologists, have explored various causes and effects of the mentality of a mob, and modern authors have claims about mob mentality and its productivity in the current world. Mob mentality is the varying behavior of humans when in a large group, with intellectual weakness, the lack of emotional restraint, and the inclination to take emotional expression to extreme actions—usually resulting in rash and reckless decisions and outcomes. Although personal thoughts and feelings contribute to the crowd’s rash actions in a mob, it is primarily because of innate human nature and the elimination of individual thought that people become irrational and of a savage nature when in crowds and become less mentally and emotionally able, submitting to various contagions in the crowd.
People that are members of mobs act mentally and emotionally unrestrained because of inevitable human nature to revert to savage ways. The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell looks at a number of social epidemics and analyzes their build up to the point where they tip. “Tipping” is that point where an epidemic booms, or grows, to its maximum potential. Gladwell begins defining “tipping” with a literal example of the famous shoes, Hush Puppies. Once considered old-fashioned, Hush Puppies experienced a social boom in the mid-90s when hipsters in New York made them trendy again. Gladwell continues explaining “tipping” with a medical epidemic of syphilis in Baltimore. Gladwell introduces us to three essential rules of epidemics: the Law of the Few, the Stickiness Factor and the Power of Context. The Law of the Few says a key factor in epidemics is the role of the messenger: it spreads through word-of-mouth transmission. Gladwell explains this theory with an example of how Paul Revere managed to spread the news of British invasion overnight. Gladwell continues to explain that there are several types of people that create these types of epidemics. They are called Connectors, Mavens and Salesmen. Connectors are those people that are very social and can literally connect with people with as little as two degrees of separation. Mavens are those that know a lot about a lot of different things. They may recommend a certain restaurant and you must go because you know what they told you about it is true. And Salesmen are exactly that: people that are easily social and persuading.
In the teleplay “The Monsters are Due on Maple Street” written by Rod Serling, a small street in a suburban American town falls into chaos after they lose all electricity, and in an effort to find the monsters responsible, they become animals. They search for a scapegoat and let their imagination et the best of them because “for a moment their fear almost turns their walk into a wild stampede, but Steve's voice, loud, incisive, and commanding, makes them stop. ‘Wait a minute...wait a minute! Let's not be a mob!’ The people stop as a group, seem to pause for a moment, and then much more quietly and slowly start to walk across the street. ” (Rod Serling ?). The residents of Maple Street fall victim to herd mentality. They rush to find the culprit and they lose all sense of moral and judgement. As they are about to become a mob they listen to Steve as he advises that they do not. All the residents of Maple Street listen to him and sure, he did use mob mentality to do good, but it goes to show the amount of power one man holds. In an emergency situation where the only the bystander is present, the bystander might fear for their safety but all of the pressure to intervene is focused on the bystander increasing the chances of intervention. In a similar situation but there are several observers present, the pressure to intervene is shared among all the observers. None of the witnesses feels solely responsible and this results in no action from the witnesses. In terms of blame, individual behavior is driven on consequences and this influences a bystander to act. In a group, blame cannot be assigned to a single individual resulting in inaction. In a case where observes are known to be present but their behavior cannot be observed, a bystander can assume the observers have intervened so the bystander’s intervention is unnecessary. History repeating itself, manslaughter, homicide, and riots are all forms of mob mentality of which is shown in the book, A tale of Two Cities, by Charles Darnay. Taking the given words into consideration, ask yourself “Have I ever taken part in mob mentality?” The answer for most people will be “yes”. Mob mentality is something so negative and aggressive yet we still take a part in it. We are all too caught up in trying to fit in with everyone else, that we make it into something that isn’t such a big deal to us.

Conformity, or going along with the crowd, is a unique phenomenon that manifests itself in our thoughts and behaviors. It’s quite simple to identify countless examples of the power of conformity in virtually all aspects of social life. Conformity influences our opinions and relationships with others, often to a higher extent than we realize. It is posited that people generally conform to the group in order to fit in and avoid rejection or because they truly believe the group is more knowledgeable than they are. After analyzing numerous studies and experiments on the nature of conformity, one will find that the motive of social acceptance is the greatest driver of conformity.
Societies will always have problems that cause some sort of reaction from individuals who believe that their social stability is being endangered. There have been a number of moral panics which have captivated society in terror and more often than not, owing to unfamiliarity. This essay will discuss the perception of a moral panic and will look at the case of the September 11th Terrorist attack against the United States of America, which triggered a colossal conflict of morality within modern day society. This essay will also analyse terrorism as a perceived deviance, the role of the moral entrepreneur and folk devil, in order to develop a level of understanding to the causes of this particular moral panic and its effects on society.

On December 3, in full view of a number of witnesses standing within close proximity, Ki-Suck Han, a 58 year-old male entered into an altercation with Naeem Davis, a 30 year-old homeless male at the Times Square subway station. Han was pushed down into the tracks and then struggled and pleaded for help for what was reported to be a full 22 seconds, as witnesses watched, took pictures, and failed to come to his assistance (Petrecca & Eversley, 2012). The man was then hit by the approaching subway train as it dragged into the station. This is a sad example of the Bystander Effect which demonstrates that people are less likely to come to the assistance of another in an emergency situation when other bystanders are present and also perceived to be responsible and able to help (Schneider, Gruman, and Coutts, 2012). Moreover, we are most of the time influenced by Social Loafing. Social loafing is the diffusion of responsibility among a group of people. When a group of people are perceiving an emergency situation, all of them tend to think that others are available to help. Social influence explains that people always look to others to evaluate a situation as a real emergency. We assume that others may know something that we do not know and we measure their reactions before we decide how we will respond. If we noticed that those around us are acting as if it is an emergency, then we will view the situation in the same way and act accordingly. However, if those around us are acting calm, then we may not realize the immediacy of the situation and therefore fail to respond appropriately. Maybe this is the answer to why people did not help the homeless who was attacked by the 58 year- old man. They failed to see the situation as a real emergency, and as a result they did not act
