Recently, three articles were reviewed discussing whether or not the movie Moana was insensitive or not. There are many different opinions about this controversy about whether the movie was insensitive or not. Disney was justified in creating the Moana film and was not culturally insensitive to the Polynesian people because the creators of Moana traveled to the Pacific Islands to learn about Polynesian culture, they made their music as authentic as possible, and because the way the characters are interpreted are as political and cultural figures that represent strength. An example quote would be from article one talking about how they made their music as genuine as it should be. “Miranda worked with Hawaiian songwriter and musician Opetaia Foa’i, so the music would sound authentic.” This quote explains how the creative team did a lot to make sure their movie painted the perfect picture of how the Polynesians lived. Moreover, the quote explains how working with a Hawaiian songwriter and the composer of Hamilton can make the music blend well with the movie. Another example shown through a quote would be also in article one which talks about the future of the characters. “They understood the importance of being part of creating the next major figure in the Disney universe.” This quote explains how important it is for the movie to be successful to create a positive picture of Polynesians. Additionally, the characters in the movie could become a great jewel in the Disney collection along with many other great movie characters. To conclude with “The General History of Virginia” and Disney’s version of Pocahontas, the two stories had two different opinions and views. Although, Disney’s portrayal of Pocahontas was perceived as an offense to the Native Americans, no one really knows the actual events that took place during that time. People will continue to think that John Smith’s version was a bit hysterical, while the Native Americans will take the Disney movie Pocahontas to an offense. John Smith and Disney both gave their own versions of their story. Others will continue to do the same.
After examining the sources, I strongly believe that Pocahontas did not save John Smith from the urgent, deadly circumstance that legends speak of. Although history textbooks such as The Americans: A History write that Pocahontas “rescued Smith when he was captured”, it refers to her rescue as a legend. While some legends may be exaggerated versions of partial truths, many are purely just stories. Although Pocahontas may have “saved” John Smith from a less dire circumstance, the odds of her rescuing him from a desperate, violent capture is probably not true. Furthermore, Smith did not mention any threat or capture in his book written a year after the “actual” event. However, in order to gain more fame and money, he included an epic, detailed description of her rescue in the Generall Historie of Virginia. If Pocahontas truly tried to “save him from death” (Smith), John Smith would’ve had to mention her rescue in his first book.
Disney is a huge contributor to the misleading ideas and the way we view the Native population. In the movie Peter Pan with the scene showing the “Indians” they completely exaggerate their skin tone to make it a darkish red look. Not only is the skin tone altered, but they top it off with the iconic feather in the back of their hair. Another stereotype would be their actions during the movie when they put a hand over their mouth to make the whooping sound and dance around. I asked Sebastian Hunt, a member of the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska, what he thought of the clip I showed him of Peter Pan with the “Indians”. He replied, “ Wow I think it’s funny and sad that that's how the producers thought of the Native population when making the movie showing kids that's how we act, dance and most importantly look when in reality it’s not true at all.” That's not the only movie that Disney came out with that falsely portrays Natives. In Pocahontas they show the Natives as savages and even have a chant/song in the movie stating they are savages, barely even humans and dirty freaking devils. According to the National FFA Organization, “FFA members embrace concepts taught in agricultural science classrooms nationwide, build valuable skills through hands-on experiential learning and each year demonstrate their proficiency in competitions based on real-world agricultural skills”(“Statistics”). There are so many careers that tie into FFA, and many of them have to do with agriculture. Not every career that has to do with agriculture is about farming. Sixteen years after premiering as Disney’s thirty-third animated film, Pocahontas still incites excitement and wonder within those who wish for nothing more than to be a Disney princess. As Disney’s most notable attempt at political correctness, Pocahontas was created to entertain while attempting to maintain authenticity in regards to historical accuracy and in its fairness of depicting Native American culture. Jacquelyn Kilpatrick, the author of “Disney’s ‘Politically Correct’ Pocahontas”, feels the movie not only failed at being historically accurate but that it fell far short of being politically correct. The article, which appeared in the Fall, 1995 issue of Cineaste, contends the Disney production was duty bound in preserving the integrity of the Pocahontas legend and being both multiculturally and socially inoffensive. However, if being politically correct and constantly factual within any version of media made for entertainment were the standard, we would be left with documentaries and non-fiction. Artistic license allows for a literal account of events to become an engaging, accessible production.
Although the Disney film Pocahontas fictionalizes real accounts in American history, it provides audiences with basic life lessons. The Native Americans in the film are shown negatively compared to the Europeans. A child watching the film might not understand the relationship between the two groups, the film pushes the idea that Native Americans are bad while the Europeans are good. Adults may view the film more critically than children, but the morals are the same across all ages.
Disney’s intentions were more than to captivate young children. They were ultimately to retell the original story of Pocahontas and the settlers and to address social issues of lifestyle and acceptance depending on race and the way they are being treated, proving that marriage isn’t all that important and addressing familial gender roles in society based on having a mother figure. Since 1995, the story of Pocahontas serves to entertain the young minds of children, but none the less the messages for seen in the movie, are mentioned to stress the issues of a series of systems in which maintain the imbalance of power among society’s social organization.

Rosina Lippi-Green's article "Teaching Children How to Discriminate - What We Learn From The Big Bad Wolf" (1997) examines the discrimination and stereotypes toward different race, ethnicity, gender, religion, nationality and region that Disney presents in their animated films. Lippi-Green also points out the use or misuse of foreign accents in films, television and the entertainment industry as a whole. Such animated films are viewed mainly by children. Lippi-Green makes a central argument in which she says that children are taught to discriminate through the portrayal of the different accented characters in Disney films.

Our society has associated it darkness and evil and it has become an issue that is very offensive to AfricanAmericans. In addition to sending conflict messages about valuing all races, Disney implies that in Pocahontas, certain personality types are not considered and valued. Similarly in Hercules, the one and only Muse who is not beautiful stereotypically is the one muse who is the comic. What this means is that only the extremely beautiful and fun loving people are valued in our society (Booker 38). The mixed message brought out is that all people are valued, but really only fun and lively people are valued.

The teachings from Grandma Tala and Chief Tui are very contrasting while in a way they are connected. Moana is able to gather characteristics from her father as well as her grandma which make her a very unique individual seen by the end of the movie.
