The movie Moana is about a young girl who goes upon a voyage to return the heart of
Te Fiti to stop her home island from dying. In doing so she shows multiple characteristics of the movement transcendentalism. She shows self- reliance, the ability to connect and learn from nature, non-conformity, and oversoul. All of which helped her learn what she's wanted to know. Her true purpose in life.
The whole movie revolves around oversoul with Te-Feti being the heart of nature. At the start of the movie Te-Feti’s heart gets stolen by Maui, a demigod of the wind and sea. She shows the most self-reliance when she sets out against her dad’s will to find Maui a demigod who stole the heart Te Fiti and make him return the heart to restore order. However, she struggles during her journey to realize that she can be self reliant and doesn’t need help by repeating to herself “I am Moana of Motunui. You will board my boat and restore the heart to Te Fiti.” to help remind herself what her mission is and that she can accomplish it. Disney incorporated this to show that young girls can do things by themselves. Disney incorporated the message that falls into self reliance and that is trusting oneself when others may not believe in you.This came into play when Maui left Moana to return the heart herself because he damaged his magical fish-hook and did not want it to break. Everything she did lead her back to the ocean eventually. In the start of the movie Moana connects with nature when she was walking on the beach grabbing a sea shell. When Moana notices a baby sea turtle trying to be eaten by birds she decides to help the turtle back into the ocean where he belongs instead of getting the seashell. This act of kindness caught the oceans attention and chose her to return the heart to restore order. This shows a connection between Moana and the ocean. While on the journey Moana learns how to connects with the wind, the waves, and the stars to help guide her to Maui and then to the island of Te Fiti.
Moana shows non-conformity in the start of the film when her father is telling her that she will become the chief of the island of Motunui. However, Moana ignores him and goes out sailing past the reef against her father's orders. Moana realized that there's more to her life than staying on the island and that she had sailing in her blood and wasn’t about to let her father stand in her way.
