I believe that mistakes are absolutely not necessary to making discoveries. I believe this for a very good reason. If someone were to discover a cure for cancer, they could work on that cure and get closer and closer to the cure without making a mistake. They might have to put a tremendous amount of work into the cure, but that doesn’t mean they need to make a mistake. In Praise of Careful Science it says, “Most of the time, scientists work for decades and make very few mistakes.” Do honestly think that the scientists did not discover anything in those decades. It’s okay, because humans design technology therefor technology is not perfect because humans are not perfect either. Throughout Michael Crichton’s book he progressively makes his characters go through a lot of events in which technology failure and human error occur probably to induce a thrill, also to continue to be realistic with his novel, since it is science fiction. It is realistic because human error and technology failure occur every day in the real world. Not usually do they decide life or death, unlike in The Andromeda Strain. Where the errors that occurred were putting many lives at a high risk of danger. The scientists are working with an extremely dangerous contaminant at first before the organism mutates into a different organism. The lab was not foolproof for that type of organism since the world had not even been exposed to it before and knew nothing about it. Therefor the reader almost comes in reading the novel knowing that some type of mechanical or technology failure will occur as well as human error. If experiments did not fail then people would not know what is correct. “After all, we would not know which paths are best for advancement if all paths were not ventured” (5). “Replication is vital to science. The people of the Puritan community traveled across the Atlantic for religious reasons, and because men affiliated with medical science did not tend to practice religion, they rarely inhabited this community. Chillingworth, falling under the category of "skillful men of the medical and chirurgical profession," would not be expected to reside in this community. The narrator through emphasizes this with his rhetorical questioning, "Why, with such a rank in the learned world, had he come hither? What could he, whose sphere was in great cities, be seeking in the wilderness?" These questions demonstrate that it was so strange for Chillingworth to appear in this community because of his association with science. All through the history of mankind, many important inventions discoveries have been made, and they have helped the human race advance towards a more happy and healthy lifestyle. This success was not achieved by solely doing the “right” things all of the time. Many times, mistakes are made, and these mistakes often lead to the greatest scientific discoveries. Lewis Thomas, a biologist and author of The Medusa and the Snail, argues that making no mistakes will not get anything useful done. Thomas’s argument is valid and it should be considered correct because a great quantity of major inventions and discoveries were created when people made mistakes.

The Victorian masses no longer had a bedrock of tradition and Biblical scripture to stand upon; it had been dashed to pieces by fossilized rocks and the skulls of apelike men. The poet laureate of the age, Alfred, Lord Tennyson, the voice of the Victorian people, expresses his horror and bewilderment at the implications of these scientific discoveries in "In Memoriam A. H. H." In sections 54, 55, and 56 of this lengthy poem, Tennyson finds his belief in God weakened and his faith foundering in the face of scientific fact.
