Discussion: With a mission driven budget there will be an effort to calculate needs and what do the tuition and fees cover. We may get less from the UMaine System if raising more on this campus.
Claire said it’s a fair statement.
President Hunter stated the model has been approved but will now be fine-tuned. There will be peer institutions and a case will be made based on research, outreach, etc. Peer institutions will be different on the UMaine campus than the other seven campuses.
There will be a budget presentation in October 26

Is Financial Aid prorated for the difference between 14 and 15 credit hour equivalent?
A. Provost Hecker believed it’s less than the cost of a credit hour. Hope students will look at that and use May or summer term.
Q. What do you expect for hiring new faculty?
A. Currently working with Claire Strickland on the budget. We’re slightly above credit hours budgeted right now, looking to see what can be anticipated for next year and if any raise in tuition rates. This year should be comparable to last year, centrally funded positions will be clearer in November.
Q. You mention Merit Aid, regarding financial aid, but what about scholarships from endowment?
A. Those are different, not institutional funds.
Q. What about students that do internships, those students aren’t getting 15 credit hours for that? Will this affect recruitment?
A. We’ve become consistent with other institutions so don’t see recruitment hurt. They can apply their aid to May or summer term.
Q. Back to funding faculty positions centrally, do you ever see a time where reinvestment in colleges?
A. Centrally funded positions are about the institutions priorities. Once funds go to colleges it becomes salary a line in the college.
Q. Do lines remain in the college if someone retires?
A.
To begin with, there are valid points made. For starters universities need to stop considering themselves as businesses and stop putting business first, and
Since the 1980’s the cost of attending colleges have increased rapidly. Rising costs of for Medicare, highways and prisons have caused many states to reduce a percentage of their budget for higher education. Colleges and Universities currently face a very serious challenge:
...earn the material. Schools for the most part budget the money that they get to the best of their ability, but need more money to use for these basic and important needs. Overall the school budget committee needs to start from the bottom and fund what is necessary and needed to get schools back on their feet. These easily solved problems are a key part of school funding and should be addressed appropriately.
President Obama stated that the government would not continue to invest funds into an "undisciplined system." Field K. (2013, August 21) Obama Vows Action on College Costs, but Observers Say His Options Are Few. P.1, Washington Post. As well, the President stressed on how he will withhold some federal aid from colleges that fails to keep tuition growth low, and has proposed grants for states and colleges that adopt cost-saving measures. NY Times states that the federal gover...
Allan and Davis mention the spike of college cost since 1995 has increased by 150 percent; student debt has increased 300 percent since 2003, and with education, second to the mortgage industry in the nation’s debt, America needs to redirect their attention to the future and focus on education (Allan n. pg). Budget cuts from national to state
The board of trustees in the past couple of years have had to raise tuition a number of times for all students. Within a five year period, the university had an enrollment
I conducted a survey to test how students feel about rising tuition prices. As a college student who is attending a public university with government assistant, I wanted to know how other college students felt about tuition prices increasing. I wanted to know if it makes them worried about how they will pay for college,if they worry about continuing their education, or if it makes them reconsider attending college if college was a goal for them.
„« The admission price for the first year should be $6 in order to cover the total cost.
Today’s students have numerous options to choose from and as a public non-for profit university, UMUC’s policies are significantly affected by state of Maryland’s policy makers’ decisions including funding. Additionally, UMUC operates multiple centers overseas, these centers are susceptible to foreign government influences, cultures, religion and laws that can undermine UMUC’s operations.

The department of Developmental Education is tasked each year with coming up with the following years budget and this year I was given that task. The Dean has given us a very hard task and that is that we have to cut 10% of our budget for next year. My task is to come up with five strategies that help in reducing our budget by 10% just for the following year, two of them will have to present a permanent change to our current budget and the ones to follow. This was a very tough decision, as many items have to be considered. I have given it a lot of thought and this is what I came up with, I will also explain which one of the strategies I think works best for our department and the institution.
But perhaps most importantly, by setting a trend for competitive prices in the education market NYU will have secured an invaluable long-term investment; the aggressive quality-based competition seen today suggests that universities and colleges will compete in a similarly aggressive fashion to cut tuition. While enrollment rates across the board will increase, tuition prices will decrease – a trend that will simultaneously provide an opportunity to reverse the student debt crisis, and protect those positive externalities that shape the future day to day.
As colleges’ funds dry up, colleges must turn to the public to further support higher education. By raising state taxes, colleges can collect funds to help improve the school’s budgets. The state provides funds from the taxes for colleges to receive a certain amount for each student currently enrolled. All community and traditional four year colleges collect these funds in order to maintain the school’s budget. As reporter,
To sum up, I thing universities and colleges should not increase their tuition fees. Firstly, education equity demands that the economic situation of students, especially those from low-come families should be taken into consideration. It is very important for the promotion of social equity. Secondly, apart from the funds supported by the government, universities should find other sources to save money or attract more investment to help them survive the period of economic distress. Last but not least, making money should by no means become the aim of running a universities. Public undertakings should not be governed by market rules.
