UMUC SWOT Analysis
Strengths
As a regionally accredited online university and member of the University System of Maryland, UMUC provides high quality, affordable education to its students while enabling them to enjoy the benefits of a public university from anywhere in the world. Additionally, UMUC’s over 90 degrees, specializations, and certificates enable it to attracts diverse students across multiple specialties.
Weaknesses
Differentiation is difficult for UMUC. Almost all the degrees it offers are available through its competitors in one form or the other. Hardly can you find a regionally accredited traditional university in the United States today without some online degrees. Today’s students have numerous options to choose from and as a public non-for profit university, UMUC’s policies are significantly affected by state of Maryland’s policy makers’ decisions including funding. Additionally, UMUC operates multiple centers overseas, these centers are susceptible to foreign government influences, cultures, religion and laws that can undermine UMUC’s operations.

How did the various SWOT elements get reflected in the UMUC Strategic Plan for 2015-2018?

• Harnessing its extended experience to create student-centric programs that add values to students’ learning.
• Leveraging technology for adult education through establishing infrastructure, advancing learning platforms, continuing technological evolution
• Adoption of a single global operational model whereby all segments—Europe, Asia, and stateside—are combine operationally as a single entity.
