UMUC SWOT Analysis
Strengths
As a regionally accredited online university and member of the University System of Maryland, UMUC provides high quality, affordable education to its students while enabling them to enjoy the benefits of a public university from anywhere in the world. Additionally, UMUC’s over 90 degrees, specializations, and certificates enable it to attracts diverse students across multiple specialties.
Weaknesses
Differentiation is difficult for UMUC. Almost all the degrees it offers are available through its competitors in one form or the other. Hardly can you find a regionally accredited traditional university in the United States today without some online degrees. Today’s students have numerous options to choose from and as a public non-for profit university, UMUC’s policies are significantly affected by state of Maryland’s policy makers’ decisions including funding. Additionally, UMUC operates multiple centers overseas, these centers are susceptible to foreign government influences, cultures, religion and laws that can undermine UMUC’s operations.
How did the various SWOT elements get reflected in the UMUC Strategic Plan for 2015-2018?
The elements of SWOTs are reflected throughout the Strategic plan in the following ways (adapted from the UMUC Strategic Plan for 2015-2018):
• Harnessing its extended experience to create student-centric programs that add values to students’ learning.
• Leveraging technology for adult education through establishing infrastructure, advancing learning platforms, continuing technological evolution
• Adoption of a single global operational model whereby all segments—Europe, Asia, and stateside—are combine operationally as a single entity.

Clearly, HBCUs provide several benefits to African-American students. Not only have they helped to combat the cycle of discrimination that minority students experienced before the civil rights initiatives of the 1960s, but they strive to provide a warm, supportive and inclusive academic environment that addresses African-American college students as a whole person. Additionally, HBCUs are increasing their efforts to ensure that higher education is accessible, affordable and achievable for individuals with unique socioeconomic challenges. Despite obstacles, historically Black institutions will continue to play a vital and significant role in the fabric of higher education.

However, these issues can be changed by an increase in support from different places which would add to the existing importance of HBCU’S. People are inspired by the Institutions because they work hard to overcome obstacles placed in their way. Students, Alumni’s, and Parents see the motivation and determination of the schools to stay ongoing and I see it as well.

The competitive nature of the current higher education environment paired with the constant evolution and turbulence has forced institutions to look to new ways to deliver value to satisfy the buyer’s needs. With over 4,600 degree granting colleges and universities in the United States alone, the domestic and global competition level rival or surpass most other markets. Regardless of industry, failure to perform activities differently than your competition will result in a collapse. The ability to deliver unique, differentiated value is essential to surviving in competitive markets. As competition grows, higher education decision makers are forced to fit a niche market, market to a universal market while still using value differentiation methods or look to different revenue sources to maintain sustainability.
The SWOT analysis is an extremely useful tool for understanding and decision making for all sorts of situations in business and organizations.
