In many instances in America, preconceptions about minority races influence the way people treat the people of these minority groups. Because of these stereotypes, people are taunted every day, and put down, just because of the ethnicity that they were born with. These people have a harder time showing their personality due to the fact that people around them have already have preconceptions of how that person must be. One example of this is that universities in the U.S. give minority groups a boost on their college application. This kind of process is often called affirmative action; the idea of making sure that people of minority groups get into colleges, which frequently raises controversy.(add transition) Universities should not take race and gender into consideration in college applications because it can reduce the reputation of the school, gives minorities an unfair advantage to get into colleges, and causes unprepared minority students to drop out of college.
To begin with, race and gender should not be taken into consideration in universities because a university’s reputation can be tarnished because of racial and gender profiling. On npr.org a survey polling four hundred sixty-two admissions counselors resulted in one-fourth of the counselors saying they had been pressured by their faculty to accept students based things such as the income of the family and because of the atheletic attributes of the student. The counselors said that they accepted minorities despite the fact that they performed at a lower standard than the other students that have applied. Even though affirmative action in schools may not be fully removed from university systems, if admissions counselors and university faculties start thinking of the disadvantages of affirmative action they will realise that it is in the benefit of the university that better educated non-minority students are getting a better chance of getting into a university of their choice. If you wish to change the way universities help minority students you can propose laws to your local senator, or congressman that be made to further prevent universities from further giving minority students an advantage; the results of these actions might be that, children planning on going to a certain university will know that everyone in the university was given the chance of being there because of their academic strength, and not on their race.
I do not believe that students are accepted to college based on their skin color being white, with that being said I do believe that there is a fair process for accepting college students to schools. The numbers of white student to minority students may be very different, but I do not believe that has to do with a raciest selection of a student body. Discrimination is still a chronic global issue, and drastic inequalities still exist at the present time. Thus, the Affirmative Action Law is an important tool to many minorities most especially to women, and people of color, for the reason that this program provides an equality on educational, and professional opportunities for every qualified individual living in the United States. Alexis de Tocqueville discussed how he believed that majority rules in the United States. He writes about how the majority in America has control over the opinions of the masses and how people do not think for themselves. The latter part of that is true. The masses do not form many of their own opinions but these opinions are not given to them, like Tocqueville says, by the majority. These "ready made opinions" (Tocqueville 11) are given to American people by a powerful few. Tocquville's writing does not apply to the US today because several kinds of minorities wield inordinate amounts of power in modern American society.
Affirmative action, while a great idea in the beginning, is no longer needed to make up for the past discrimination of women and minorities. It does not get rid of discrimination, but rather creates it towards whites and men. Any form of discrimination is wrong, whether intentional or unintentional. Affirmative action, the act of giving preference to an individual for hiring or academic admission based on the race and/or gender of the individual has remained a controversial issue since its inception decades ago. Realizing its past mistake of discriminating against African Americans, women, and other minority groups; the state has legalized and demanded institutions to practice what many has now consider as reverse discrimination. “Victims” of reverse discrimination in college admissions have commonly complained that they were unfairly rejected admission due to their race. They claimed that because colleges wanted to promote diversity, the colleges will often prefer to accept applicants of another race who had significantly lower test scores and merit than the “victims”. In “Discrimination and Disidentification: The Fair-Start Defense of Affirmative Action”, Kenneth Himma responded to these criticisms by proposing to limit affirmative action to actions that negate unfair competitive advantages of white males established by institutions (Himma 277 L. Col.). Himma’s views were quickly challenged by his peers as Lisa Newton stated in “A Fair Defense of a False Start: A Reply to Kenneth Himma” that among other rationales, the Fair-Start Defense based on race and gender is a faulty justification for affirmative action (Newton 146 L. Col.). This paper will also argue that the Fair-Start Defense based on race and gender is a faulty justification for affirmative action because it cannot be fairly applied in the United States of America today. However, affirmative action should still be allowed and reserved for individuals whom the state unfairly discriminates today.
It is hard to believe that after electing a minority president, the United States of America can still be seen as a vastly discriminatory society. A question was posed recently after a viewing of Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream…” speech of whether his dream has become a reality. After consideration, a majority of the viewers said no. Although many steps have been taken to improve racial equality in America, there is still no way to legislate tolerance. Dr. King’s message of equality for all has been lost in a black and white struggle over the taken meaning of his context. Until our society can allow all people to live in peace we will never truly achieve King’s dream. Case in point, referring to President Obama as our "our First Black President" should not be considered a statement of pride over how far we have come. Placing this racial qualifier, even in a positive light, only serves to point out his minority status, not the fact that he is the President of the United States. According to Dr. King's dream, a man or woman, black or white, would be viewed as President without qualifying their differences from mainstream America.
Affirmative action is without a doubt, one of the most controversial and debated political topics found throughout the entirety of the history of the United States, especially in regards to college admissions. On both sides of the argument, you have millions of Americans vitriolically defending their beliefs as to whether or not affirmative action is a positive thing that benefits the entirety of America as a whole, or rather an outdated model existing well past its expiration date. Newsweek has a story on this same debate which has hit the nation spotlight once more with a case being brought against the University of Michigan by some white students who claimed that the University’s admissions policies accepted minority students over them, even though they had better grades than the minority students. William Symonds of Business Week, however, thinks that it does not really matter. He claims that minority status is more or less irrelevant in college admissions and that class is the determining factor.

Affirmative Action is not only for people of color it is also for women. It is needed to achieve full gender equity in schools and the workplace.
