Millay’s complex book, “The Sea of Tranquility,” and Gill’s heart-wrenching poem, “The Girl Who Was Afraid to Be,” display that you should never let the actions of others defy you. There are quite a few similarities between the two literary works for instance both tell the story of a girl whom the world broke. For Millay’s female lead, Nastaya, it was having the thing she loved most being taken away from her in the most brutal way possible. “I hate it when it stutters and trembles and reminds me that my identity is gone”. In “the Sea of Tranquility”, there are numerous aspects of the book that are nothing like the poem. Unlike the poem an abundance of anger is expressed in the book. To illustrate when Nastaya was almost killed by her attacker or the person who broke her, she lost something she cherished more than her life, the ability to play the piano.She also lost the ability to have kids and lost months of school in therapy and in and out of hospitals. This left her a bitter shadow of who she once was. “ I hate my left hand. I hate to look at it. I hate it when it stutters, and trembles and reminds me that my identity is gone. But I look at it anyways because it also reminds me that I’m going find the boy that took everything from me. I’m going to kill the boy that killed me, and when I kill him I’m going to do it with my left hand.”. This quote shows that she believes everything she once was is gone and demonstrates how she let the actions of the person who almost killed her redefine her identity and outlook on the world. Nastaya also has a dismal view on life, unlike the girl in the poem who never expresses emotion. For example, “ I live in a world without magic or miracles. When women are able to be strong, and use the power that they have always had, they are able to move mountains with that power. They can remove themselves from a man who takes advantage of them or objectifies them, and reduce them to nothing more than the coward that they are. Larcom’s poem painted a clear picture of progress that women have made against men, and how they are tackling the issues set before them. Because of Larcom and her ability to use her voice through writing to portray and strong vision of women, has empowered many others to do the same. They are able to break free from the chains of repression that so many men have restrained women by for so long.
In the poem “(love song, with two goldfish)” the love life of two individuals are portrayed as the lives of two fish. Their romance is failing as one lovers constant affection pushes the other away. In the end, one-sided love can only get them so far. The poet Grace Chua uses fish diction, strategically placed parentheses, and the symbol of the bowl in order to show how one's undying love can often leave them broken when their feelings are not reciprocated.
The poet seems to share the same pain with the fish, observing the scene and enjoying the detail just like enjoying an artwork. The poet lets the fish go because she is totally touched by the process between life and death; she loves life but, meanwhile, is deeply hurt by the life. In the poem, the fish has no fear towards her; the desire to live is in the moving and tragic details when she faces the death.
Water can be identified as a symbol that embodies the very essence of Kate Chopin’s The Awakening. This “feminist” novel depicts the life of Edna Pontellier and explores the many daunting themes of identity, women and their roles in society, and independence; all of which, during the nineteenth century, were extremely sensitive and daring topics. In a nutshell, the novel is truly about her “awakening”, which is portended by its title. What allows this is water, which stands to represent Edna’s awakening. It is no coincidence that much of her time at Grand Isle was spent at the beach or in the water, or that her infamous death was due to drowning. Similarities like these do not just occur: they give purpose to the novel’s plot and meaning.
This is shown through the tone changing from being disappointed and critical to acceptance and appreciative. The speaker’s friend, who after listening to the speaker’s complaints, says that it seems like she was “a child who had been wanted” (line 12). This statement resonates with the speaker and slowly begins to change her thinking. This is apparent from the following line where the speaker states that “I took the wine against my lips as if my mouth were moving along that valved wall in my mother's body” (line 13 to line 15). The speaker is imagining her mother’s experience while creating her and giving birth to her. In the next several lines the speakers describe what she sees. She expresses that she can see her mother as “she was bearing down, and then breathing from the mask, and then bearing down, pressing me out into the world” (line 15 to line 18). The speaker can finally understand that to her mother the world and life she currently lived weren't enough for her. The imagery in the final lines of this poem list all the things that weren’t enough for the mother. They express that “the moon, the sun, Orion cartwheeling across the dark, not the earth, the sea” (line 19 to 21) none of those things matter to the mother. In both ‘Eve Green’ and ‘Wide Sargasso Sea’, the protagonists experience fear in many guises. Although traumatic events in both Eve and Antoinette’s lives do lead to moments of sudden, striking fear, fear is also presented as having the potential to be subtle and muted, and therefore, “haunting”. Fletcher and Rhys seem to suggest that this form of fear is more damaging to the psyche than fear in its more conspicuous manifestations, as it is more deeply intertwined with the characterisations of the protagonists, therefore allowing for the fear to “pervade” the novels. As a result, it could be argued that fear has an almost constant presence in each novel, particularly because fear is seemingly linked to other prominent themes in each novel.
