The next piece of the Army compensation plan, basic allowance for subsistence, is similar to basic allowance for housing but not as substantial or determined the same. Basic allowance for subsistence is a monthly stipend that military members receive to help them with paying for groceries or feeding themselves. The amount a soldier receives is based upon whether they are enlisted or an officer. Currently enlisted soldiers receive $357.55 per month, officers receive $246.24 per month, and both are tax-free. Basic allowance for subsistence is similar to basic allowance for housing in that it is calculated by the current cost of food. There are no dependent rates assigned to basic allowance for subsistence. Compared to basic allowance for …show more content…
Cost of living adjustment is authorized for soldiers stationed in areas where the cost of living is extremely high and is intended to assist them with paying for their life’s necessities such as housing, groceries, and utilities. A prime example of a duty station that offers a cost of living adjustment is Hawaii. The cost of housing, services and goods in Hawaii are greater than those in the continental United States because it is an island and everything has to be imported. Because of this increased cost of living the Army provides all soldiers in Hawaii a cost of living adjustment to assist them in their day to day living. The cost of living adjustment is also tax-free and is based upon location, rank, years of service, and number of …show more content…
In most organizations it is difficult to receive paid time off. Usually one starts out with a limited amount of paid time off such as one week per year and must work years to build up to two or three weeks of paid time off. This category of compensation is where the Army also excels. Every soldier in the Army, regardless of rank or time in service receives 30 days of paid leave or time off each year. This paid leave is accumulated throughout the year at 2.5 days per month to equal 30 days at the end of one year. Soldiers are also permitted to retain up to 60 days of leave before forfeiting it. One day of leave counts as one 24-hour day. Where my wife works, she accumulates paid time off in
The GI Bill offered veterans up to $500 a year for college tuition and other educational costs---ample funding at the time. An unmarried veteran also received a $50-a-month allowance for each month spent in uniform; a married veteran received slightly more. Other benefits included mortgage subsidies, enabling veterans to purchase homes with relative ease.
In the year 1944, US Legislation passed the Servicemen’s Readjustment act, commonly known as the GI Bill of Rights. It is one of the most significant pieces of legislation ever produced by the federal government; one that impacted the United States socially, economically and politically. The GI Bill offers a comprehensive package of benefits, including financial assistance for higher education for veterans of U.S. military service. The benefits of the GI Bill are intended to help veterans readjust to civilian life following service to their country and to encourage bright, motivated men and women to volunteer for military duty. Many factors and contributions have gone into the development of the GI Bill, and it has changed over the years. This research paper will introduce the reader to a brief history of the formation and evolution of the GI Bill, discuss the current benefits that it offers to student populations in response to their specific needs, and introduce current implications that the GI Bill has placed on student veterans and institutions across the nation.

The Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944, also known as the GI Bill of Rights (GI Bill), was signed into law on June 22, 1944, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt (United States Department of Veterans Affairs, 2012). It was a pivotal point in history, which has impacted the United States socially, economically and politically. Today, educational benefits are primary tools used to recruit service members. In 2007-2008, about 4 percent of all undergraduates and about 4 percent of all graduate students were veterans or military service members (Radford, 2011). Furthermore, the recent expansions in benefits increase the use of education benefits by veterans will grow almost 5 percent (Simon, Negrusa, & Warner, 2009). To improve the success in higher education, veterans must ensure they keep updated on current educational assistance programs as well as other educational services provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and their institutions.
The G.I. Bill has had many incarnations since Franklin Roosevelt signed the original Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944. The current Montgomery G.I. Bill, enacted in 1984, uses optional tuition benefits to serve as an incentive to military service. It is a voluntary plan that requires a contribution on the part of the soldier in order to earn tuition benefits. Though the program has cost the U.S. Government an estimated $70 billion over the years, it is widely considered one of the best single investments the federal government has ever made. A 1986 Congressional Research Office study indicates that every dollar invested in the G.I. Bill has returned between $5.00 and $12.50 in the form of increased taxes paid as a result of higher incomes.
Social security benefits are adjusted for inflation based on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers. Brandon (2013) states that if there was a change as to how inflation is measured then it could reduce social security by 20 percent. It seems as though the CPI-W would be beneficial to use for reducing the fiscal issue. Cost-of-living adjustments are usually used during job transfers. Having this benefit will help employees in deciding whether or not to take up a new job in a different location. An example of this would be when an employee is asked to move job locations from Atlanta to New York they would receive a bonus since the living expenses in New York would cost more than Atlanta’s. Companies who offer this bonus seem to have better luck with moving their employees around the Untied
Soldiers, both men and women, risk their lives fighting for our country and when they come home they receive far fewer benefits than would be expected. Throughout history the support for veterans has lessened. The amount of money that is provided to veterans for healthcare and housing after returning to the states has severely decreased since WWI.
There are many countries that deploy soldiers; the United States is the most commonly wide deployed. There is 75% of the world covered in deployment, which is roughly around 150 countries. The military ages vary from 17-62 years old, but 60,620,143 males and 59,401,942 females aging form 18-49 are fit for the military (Helping U.S. Military Veterans Reconnect , 2000-2015). When people get deployed they are usually gone between 6-18 months. It really depends on where they get stationed (Kapelski, 2015). The most common place to get deployed is
The military has many programs to help pay for all different kinds of college expenses (Kingsbury). The first is going to college after active duty. This means the individual has to serve a certain number of years before he can retire and go to college. The average number of years is four, during which he still receives education and training (Yuengling). The post 9/11 GI bill helps pay for tuition, room and board, and gives a food allowance each month.
There has always been a differential between civilian income and military and this has only just happened in the past six years. (Army Magazine) This has allowed those who have joined the military to have that pay increase since they are giving more or less their own lives to protect their country. This allows them to realize that they are on a different level than most and gives them the responsibility of that. It is with the military though that the government can increase the economy even providing jobs. (Military Spending Can Grow the Nation’s Economy) This even allows civilians to find jobs in the military and contract out. So the military has also given back to the civilian
The living wage movement is an economic reform movement that has become one of the most important public policy issues that has come up within the last 10 years. Although there is no single definition, it is often defined as an hourly salary that allows working families of four to have an income that is above the federal poverty line. This means that the livable wage laws often stipulate that hourly wages should be two to three times above the federal Mininum wage. However, unlike the Mininum wage, the living wage has so far only been enacted on the county and city level. Cities and counties enforce the living wage for companies that have contracts with their respective cities and counties, receive subsidies from their cities or counties, other economic benefits cities and counties provide to companies, and in some cases a livable wage is required for the tourist areas of the particular city. For cities and local governments, the livable wage is perceived as a measure to increase the welfare of the poor. However, like everything in life the livable wage creates its on costs that along with its benefits of increased wage to some low income earners.
Living wages became a hot topic in 1994 when Baltimore, Maryland officials adopted a policy that required all companies that received public funds or worked on government contracts to pay a wage that would sufficiently provide for the basic needs of the people they employed. Living wages differ among cities since it is calculated by the cost of living in that area. The cost of living is based on available childcare, healthcare, housing, food, and transportation costs. According to www.responsiblewealth.org, (2005) in 2000, the living wage amounted to $17,050 a year for a family of four, or $8.20 per hour for a full-time, year around worker. Most studies show that the economical benefits of living wages, such as worker productivity and reduced turnover, are increasing, and I must agree with Neumark (2003) who explains that living wages overall can reduce poverty, and living wage laws are effective, but there is an obvious tradeoff that occurs with wage increases, specifically employment reductions for individuals with little or no skills. Issues such as these will be discussed in greater detail in this paper.
Other benefits aligned with paid time off is sick leave awarded in 4 hour increments per pay period with no limit on accruals. Employees may use this time to attend medical appointments for themselves and dependents. The sick leave bank is also used for bereavement (up to 5 days) and funeral (up to 3 days) time off when unfortunate deaths occur.
For the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, we expect the sales to grow in the first quarter of year one. With people still suspect about the phone there won’t be a fixed demand on a per month basis. After a couple months pending no problems with the smartphone people will have their faith in Samsung again and purchase the Galaxy Note 8. After the first year, we expect the Galaxy Note 8 to reach a profit of 1 billion dollars. During this section, I will explain the sales forecast for each month and for the next 3 years. Also, I will discuss the breakeven analysis of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, the cost to build the smartphone, how much we are willing to pay for expenses and what expense we focus on the most.
Most people have, at one point or another, considered what they were going to do with their lives. Whether a person would like to become an activist, an artisan or a business professional, the military has something for everyone. Finding a path in life is often filled with uncertainty and procrastination. The United States military is a path in itself, should one wish to retire from it; however, should a person wish to make their own path, there are benefits for that as well that can remove all doubt and curb procrastination. Due to these many benefits, I believe that it should be mandatory for all adults to enlist for a minimum of twenty-four months.
