The next piece of the Army compensation plan, basic allowance for subsistence, is similar to basic allowance for housing but not as substantial or determined the same. Basic allowance for subsistence is a monthly stipend that military members receive to help them with paying for groceries or feeding themselves. The amount a soldier receives is based upon whether they are enlisted or an officer. Currently enlisted soldiers receive $357.55 per month, officers receive $246.24 per month, and both are tax-free. Cost of living adjustment is authorized for soldiers stationed in areas where the cost of living is extremely high and is intended to assist them with paying for their life’s necessities such as housing, groceries, and utilities. A prime example of a duty station that offers a cost of living adjustment is Hawaii. The cost of housing, services and goods in Hawaii are greater than those in the continental United States because it is an island and everything has to be imported. Because of this increased cost of living the Army provides all soldiers in Hawaii a cost of living adjustment to assist them in their day to day living. In most organizations it is difficult to receive paid time off. Usually one starts out with a limited amount of paid time off such as one week per year and must work years to build up to two or three weeks of paid time off. This category of compensation is where the Army also excels. Every soldier in the Army, regardless of rank or time in service receives 30 days of paid leave or time off each year. This paid leave is accumulated throughout the year at 2.5 days per month to equal 30 days at the end of one year. Soldiers are also permitted to retain up to 60 days of leave before forfeiting it.
