Middle adulthood is considered a period where self-acceptance is most favorable, increasing psychological well-being and life satisfaction (Arnett, 2015). During this phase in development, adults become more secure with themselves and are honest to their true selves instead of acting or pretending to be someone different. This new-found identity development is strengthened by a heightened sense of self-understanding (Arnett, 2016). Additionally, in middle adulthood, the heart muscles becomes more rigid, making intense workouts, when the heart has trouble delivering the appropriate amount of oxygen to compensate for the aerobic activity, more difficult (Arnett, 2015). Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and diet can help hinder the risk of cardiovascular disease that increases during middle adulthood (Arnett, 2015). In fact, research has proven that the risk for illnesses and diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and several types of cancers, in middle adulthood can be reduced by incorporating exercise into a regular routine (Arnett, 2015). However as time progresses into late adulthood, exercise can only deter or hinder the signs and effects of aging, not eliminate them. The onset of osteoporosis can be hindered or even reversed by introducing weight training and a calcium rich diet to one’s lifestyle (Arnett, 2105).
