Upon entry into middle adulthood there are immediate changes that are noticed in regard to appearance and physical health. One reason for change is the progression of age along with an accumulation of stressors on various parts of the body that will eventually lead to unwanted deterioration. The culprit of some other forms of changes are strictly due to age and cannot be halted naturally regardless of individuals habits prior to middle adulthood. However, aging can be less stressful if an individual adopts a healthy way of life during adolescent years and maintain positive habits into middle and late adulthood. Being in the age bracket of 40 to 65 there will be health related changes causing some to accommodate, but every experiences is unique in some particular way. There are expected to be some modifications associated with sensory functioning while in middle adulthood. According to the interviewees the changes in sensory functioning that seems to be most apparent include sight and hearing. Mr. X made it clear that as he continues to age his vision has become progressively more blurred when trying to focus on objects at a distance. Mr. X is currently dealing with a decline in his muscle to fat ratio due to the rapid softening of his muscle mass (PowerPoint: Physical Development in Middle Adulthood). This is contributed to the understanding that if muscle is not constantly being used it will eventually be loss, which is an experience of Mr. X. As Arnold Schwarzenegger once said “you can’t climb the ladder of success with your hands in your pockets”, this simply meaning that a person must be “hungry” and have a great drive to be able to achieve greatness. The feeling of greatness and satisfaction that a person will get from being a healthy, fit individual is unexplainable. Being satisfied with your own body is a very important factor to life itself. People that are healthy are known to live healthy lifestyles as well as to be great in age. There is no negative sides to being healthy, people that are healthy are happy. I plan to take an individual and better them by training them and making them a healthier person. The steps I will go through in order to make this happen are steps such as training the person, making a nutritional plan for them, and being there to support them along the journey. I will be training the person using some fundamentals that have worked for majority of world-class athletes. I plan to use simple bodybuilding tactics as my muscle builder, such as old school techniques that Arnold Schwarzenegger used in the golden ages of the sport itself. For teens diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) as well as their caregivers, this transition is often more complicated. The period of transition for individuals with ASD into adulthood is intensely more challenging due to their “unique characteristics, the lack of services that address the special needs of such individuals in adulthood, and the expectations of society for a typical path to adulthood in the face of atypical problems” (Geller and Greenberg, 2009, pg. 93). The age-related change that I am most concerned about developing is osteoporosis. The bones in our bodies are living tissue, and there is an ongoing process of replacement and reabsorption. When this process is interrupted in a way that the new bone doesn’t keep up with removing the old bone, osteoporosis can happen. Studies tell us that men and women are affected, but Caucasian and Asian women who are post menopause are at a higher risk of developing this bone disease. It causes bones to be brittle and weak so that even a small fall will cause a fracture. In more serious cases, this breaking can sometimes occur by a cough, or in bending over the wrong way.
Many women in midlife feel that they have hit their stride and they feel confident and assertive, but often women can feel less attractive sometimes too. When initially asked generally how they feel compared to their 20’s, they both responded that they still felt like they were eighteen. It was only when asked about more specific health questions that they confided that there had been considerable changes. The male responded that he started wearing reading glasses at about forty-seven. The female decided to have eye surgery so that she would not have to wear glasses. Even with the surgery, ten years later, she now relies on reading glasses.
