Michael Jackson, The King of Pop, The Gloved One; these are just a few of the names used to describe the fascinating person who contributed so much to the music industry. Throughout his life he won numerous awards, and released the best selling album in history. As one of the only black artists of his time, he lead the way for many black artists to come.
Ever since he was born on August 29, 1958, music was a big influence in Michael’s life. Michael’s father, Joseph Jackson, was a guitarist who had put aside his musical career to support his family. However, he still drove his children into the music world. When brothers Jermaine, Jackie, Tito, Marlon, Randy and Michael showed talent, he started them in a band named the Jackson Five. Michael, six years old at that time, started off as a background member, only playing the conga (a drum-like instrument from Cuba). Later, once Joseph heard Michael sing, he immediately made him the lead singer.

The group started off by playing in talent shows in their hometown of Gary, Indiana, and eventually worked their way up to signing with Motown Records in 1968.
People were amazed at Michael’s talent to convey emotions through song at such a young age, and the group’s first album, Diana Ross Presents the Jackson Five hit the charts in December 1989. Around this time, Joseph became their manager. He pushed them hard to succeed, rehearsing with them for hours and reportedly even becoming violent with them in the process. However, his effort paid off, and they became so popular, they even had a cartoon show created after
them. At thirteen, Michael began his solo career, in addition to his work in the Jackson Five. His first album, Ben, featured a limerick about a rat. This song became his first No. 1 single. He wrote many of the songs in the album, and while it had been very successful, Michael wanted his next album to be even better. When Thriller came out in 1982, it became the best-selling album in history. It’s single stayed on the charts for eighty weeks, claiming the No. 1 position for thirty-seven. In addition to that, it was nominated for twelve Grammy Awards, and won eight. Many other songs in the album were rated No. 1, including Billie Jean. It was while performing this song on a television special, Michael debuted his famous dance move, ‘The Moonwalk.’ He had created the move himself for the music video of his other single, Beat It. By now, Michael was at the height of his career. He signed a five million dollar deal with Pepsi. While filming the Pepsi commercial, he fell and suffered from burns on his face and scalp. He treated his injuries with surgery, and is believed to have used experimenting with plastic surgery on his nose, cheeks, and mouth. When asked about this subject, he replied, “You know, let's put it this way, if all the people in Hollywood who have had plastic surgery, if they went on vacation, there wouldn't be a person left in town.” In the late 1980’s, when he was around thirty years old, Michael built Neverland, a fantasy ranch in California. Costing around thirty million dollars, it had a private amusement park, a petting zoo, two railroads, and numerous statues of children. Many rumors started to swirl around him, including that he was artificially lightening his skin and that he was sleeping in a special chamber to increase his life span. In response to these claims, Michael, guest starred with Oprah Winfrey, opening up about his skin-lightening condition, vitiligo, and his troubled past with his father. The rumors didn’t stop there. Soon, Michael was accused of child molestation. After inviting several young boys to his ranch to spend the night, one of the families filed for a complaint. The case was investigated thoroughly, and Michael was found innocent.
The night of May 16, 1983, almost 50 million people watched one of the most spectacular performance on television (Scott 1). Jackson won 40 Billboard music awards (Scott 1). His lyrics are powerful he also talks about social causes, human race, and relationships. He inspired millions of people with the music he wrote. Since I was a little girl I listened to his music couple of my favorite songs are “Bad”, “Dirty Diana”, Make that Change”, “You are not alone”, “Billie Jean” “Smooth Criminal”. These songs where inspiring to me growing up to this day I listen to him. My siblings and me loved his movie called “The Moonwalker,” It’s about his music career when he was five years old till he went solo as an artist at the age of thirteen. I would watch his movie repeatedly. My sisters and me would try to follow his dance moves but we were always unsuccessful it was a great memory growing up. I loved the part when he turns himself into a bunny as a little girl I thought that was awesome. I would think I had magic And, I remember telling my mom “I wanted to be like Michael Jackson because he has powers” my mother would just laugh. In 1968, The Jackson 5 signed with Motown records. As the group progressed, Michael caught the eyes of most viewers with his amazingly smooth and soft melodic voice. His ability to capture so much emotion while he sang is what made him seem mature for his age, and interesting to watch. The group ranged from ages nine to fourteen. They group was brought to Berry Gordy’s attention by Bobby Taylor of the Vancouver. Berry Gordy fell in love with Michael. He sang his songs with so much feeling and inspiration and pain. It was like he had gone through everything he was singing about. Right off top, they exploded onto the pop and R&B charts in the 1969 with “I Want You Back”. Diana Ross played a big part in the Jackson 5’s debut. She allowed them to be an opening act for herself and the Supremes concert in Los Angeles, California in 1969. A few day later the group was on their way to stardom. Four chart-topping releases followed over the next eleven month with songs “ABC”, “The Love You Save”, and “I'll Be There”. That made Jackson 5 only group to have its first four records reach number 1 on the charts. This group captured the hearts of young people and a lot of other people ranging from different ages with their talent and charm. As a child Michael Jackson was intrigued by Brown’s flamboyant performances on stage and would soon begin to implement them into his own stage acts. By the age of five Michael Jackson was already sealed into a world of show business by his father, Joseph Jackson. With a year of amateur performances under their belt The Jackson 5 returned to the Apollo for a paid performance where they were asked to audition for Motown Records; in 1968, the group signed to Motown where they later broke records with their debut singles (Heck, 2009). Though their first single, "Big Boy," never made an appearance on the charts, NPR says that with their new contract with Motown, Michael experienced a first-time share of breaking the record for having the first four singles of any pop group to top the charts.
