Introduction The MGM Grand hotel and casino is located on the Las Vegas strip in Paradise, Nevada. MGM Grand is the world’s second largest hotel by number of rooms and the largest hotel in the United States. The 30rd floor resort includes five outdoor pools, rivers, and waterfalls along with a large convention center, spas, numerous shops, night clubs, restaurants, sporting events, and the largest casino that occupies 171,500 square feet. Today, MGM Grand includes four towers with more than 6,200 guest rooms, casino space with 2,100 slot machines and 165 game tables ( vault). When MGM Grand opened originally the intentions were to create a destination hotel right on the strip that was family friendly but the facts showed poor results. MGM went into a major renovation, appealing to more mature clientele and revamped their name to “Maximum Vegas” referring to the vast amount of activities offer to guests. keeping the business thriving throughout the years. From cleaning rooms, serving meals, maintaining the grounds, employees are in charge of lowering the risk factor within the business. MGM Grand trains its employees in top safety, executively to protect their staff, along with decentralized prevention, and safety within the community and guest. MGM Safety on a Grand Scale is “commitment to safety”, therefore stating that “Safety is the first concern in every job and task that you perform. There is no job assignment that you should undertake if you have not been trained to safely perform the work.” (hotel safety). The company goes more in depth when discussing their company policy that states that “all accidents are preventable,” and it has a list of guidelines and requirements that cover everything from reporting an unsafe condition to inspecting a work area frequently. The MGM Grand over the years have transition and made moves to be a more luxurious hotel, therefore increasing risk with heavier amenities, and accumulating safety hazards. Each department is accountable and responsible for all safety functions including training they have received throughout the time period of working at MGM. One of the most importing factors for effective training is having the proper support, in addition to higher expenses within training tools, organization that’s affective, and a well-trained workforce. Effective training in a workplace can help not only the employer but the employees from lawsuits, injuries, violations of laws and regulations. OSHA safety training focuses on enforcing safety rules and laws with many regulations enforcing employers to train employees in all safety and health aspects within the job. For MGM Grand there are over 40 OSHA safety guiding principle that employees must be trained on before performing a regulated activity (……). Additionally there are16 safety requirements for workers who work or handle hazardous substances. MGM Grand also requires their employees to take the OSHA safety training rules performance-based standard test, which illustrates that the workplace must be free of hazards but is determined by the employer. The effectiveness of the training can be determined by measurement through inspections, test scores, observations, and reports. In all, MGM and the OSHA rule’s require that employers document staff’s training and develop a proper exit route for hazardous events. Flash Back MGM Grand started building its 26 story hotel in 1972 and was officially opened in 1973 in December. Total, there were 2,078 rooms and the hotel with the casino was approximately 2 million square feet. During this time fire sprinkler systems were not installed in all areas of the hotel which include the high-rise, casino, and restaurants. The sprinkles that were installed were located only in the arcade, showrooms, and convention areas on the ground level. Despite the fire marshals request, indicating that "the liability of all the unsprinklered areas in this building should be a concern to your corporation." (firehouse) the owner fought installing the fire sprinklers. The total cost of the hotel during that time came around $106 million dollars with disregard of the cost of $192,000 for the sprinkler installation. The fire department had no enforcement authority during the building code structure and as a result the building official’s favorable ruling, life safety and fire protection took a backseat. In 1980, according to the reports the fire was determined as an electrical ground fault inside a wall of the restaurant called “The Deli”. The presence of combustible furnishing and interior finishes, foam padding and moldings, air supply and a very large undivided area allowed for an extremely rapid fire spread and heavy smoke production (FIREHOUSE). Within 6 minutes from the spark the entire casino was exposed in flames burning at a rate of 15 to 19 feet per second. By the 12th minute the casino, the west, and east wing were fully involved. At the time of the fire there was around 5,000 people in the hotel, some were able to exit the building, others rescued by firefighters and helicopters, but there were still many guests trapped in their rooms. Nearly, four hours later the fire was finally contained and the building was evacuated. The fire killed 85 people and sent over 650 people to the hospital. Out of the total 85 people, 80 of them died from smoke inhalation, four from burns, and one jumped out of the building when the fire blossomed. Out of the 85 victims 18 of them were in the casino while the other 67 were within the high rise between the 16-27 floors (firehouse). The smoke impaired the dampers and other HVAC components, openings in the vertical shafts, stairways, elevator, and the seismic joints which allowed the toxic smoke to spread throughout the building ( firehouse). Together there were 83 building code violations, along with design flaws, and installation errors. There were over 1,327 lawsuits against the company and all the money went into a settlement of $223 million dollars, which is the largest settlement where no negligence was admitted. In full, MGM Grand lost around $300 million dollars in reconstruction cost, and hundreds and thousands of dollars in business interruptions, tourism, and gaming. Analysis MGM Grand fire prevention is an important priority which created the state an opportunity to structure a building and fire code law.
Today, Nevada has the strictest sprinkler and life safety requirements. The law now states that any building over 55 feet requires to be equipped with a fire-sprinkling system, updated construction codes, and employees to have emergency training skills. MGM Grand has made strides since the fire of 1980 and developed a strict preparation for a safer community, employee’s development training, and fire prevention. The MGM Grand installed a $5 million fire-safety system along with other safety equipment. The new system was able to monitor 1,900 locations throughout the hotel and automatically activate up to 1,000 different life-safety functions to halt the spread of fire or smoke and help guide hotel occupants to safety (lvstriphis). The most significant addition was the sprinkler
system. In the hotel, MGM illustrates the importance of fire prevention duties daily. Fire prevention to MGM is a main priority and instrument in protecting not only the business but the community. The fire prevention crew is an integral part of the fire department and are proactive in developing a plan of action, design review, and inspection phase for all new projects. The probability of having a similar catastrophic fire is limited, but the consequences are the same With MGM Grands fire prevention crew such events occurring considerably decrease and is a very integral part of all fire departments. The Company In all, MGM Grand hotel and casino is located on the Las Vegas strip in Paradise, Nevada and the largest hotel in the United States. One of the most importing factors for effective training is having the proper support, in addition to being trained appropriately, organization, and a well-trained workforce. When the building was being built the fire sprinkler systems were not installed in all areas of the hotel from higher occupancy traffic and access to a hydrant. The sprinkles that were installed were located in low occupancy areas on the ground level. Despite the fire marshals request, indicating that "the liability of all the unsprinklered areas in this building should be a concern to your corporation." (firehouse) the owner fought installing the fire sprinklers. The total cost of the installment of the sprinkles was estimated around $192,000. The fire department had no enforcement authority during the building code structure and as a result the building official’s favorable ruling, life safety and fire protection took a backseat. The first article, “The Best Night $500,000 Can Buy,” portrays the perfect night out in Las Vegas. Devin chronologically takes the reader through a night in one of the famous clubs in Las Vegas, Marquee. He describes the fundamental marketing techniques that promoters use to lure women into the venue, the prices that high-rollers pay to get a VIP access and tables, and the “shitshow” atmosphere where people are dancing as if they are on Ecstasy (some people are actually on drugs). From personal experience, Las Vegas is definitely the Disney World for adults because people can openly consume alcoholic beverages on Fremont Street while enjoying their time at the arcades, night and day clubs, pools, gambling rooms, theme park rides, shopping centers, restaurants, strip clubs, and wedding chapels. Which ultimately le...
FIRE SAFETY CODES There were several factors that increased the death toll of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, all of which are now addressed in fire safety codes throughout the United States. Primary contributing factors include locked exit doors, a structurally unfit fire escape ladder, and an empty water tank that was supposed to be reserved for fighting fires (McGuire, 2011). When the fire broke out, the workers immediately attempted to exit through the stairwells and the fire escaped.... ... middle of paper ... ...(1992)
My group previously visited the Sheraton Hotel for our first interview with the front desk manager and it went very well. We decided to keep with the same hotel for our next interview, but due to a last-minute cancellation from the housekeeping manager we were not able to complete the interview. Due to this situation, I will be talking about a whole different hotel - G6 Hospitality. The name G6 Hospitality refers to the hotel brands – Motel 6 and Studio 6. I chose to G6 Hospitality because it is a well-known company that I wanted to know about more in-depth. From all my research, I have gained a lot of insight on what G6 Hospitality is all about.
The basic system of just about every casino is that of the tables (including Roulette, Blackjack and Craps) filling the center of the room with computerized machines (including slots and video poker) that don’t need much tending to surrounding the area. Also, in many casinos there is a second floor surrounding the perimeter of the building with balconies everywhere so the main floor is still the center of attention. This setup brings the eye of casino patrons, wherever they may be, to the center of the casino. This strategic arrangement plays with the fact of human nature being drawn to the center of the action. Coincidentally, or not, the games in the center of the casinos are always the games where people often spend the most money. By chance if your eye isn’t drawn then perhaps the shrill of people winning will bring your attention. Don’t be fooled though, house advantage is always higher than...
Everyone knows that the potential exists for a residential fire, but no one thinks it will ever happen to them. Helaine Greenberg points out that "Residential fires are an epidemic in the United States. Each year more than 500,000 residential fires result in approximately 5,000 deaths and 21,000 injuries" (Greenberg 1). Obviously, residential fires occur a lot more frequently than one may think. As the cliché states, the proof is in the pudding. Statistics do not lie. Many more residential fires occur than most may believe. Based on Helaine Greenberg's statistics, roughly 71 people are killed or injured by residen...

House fires are a daily occurrence. In fact, on average, 7 people die in house fires in the U.S. alone. [1] You can prevent house fires by checking faulty wiring, making sure your stove is turned off, and checking to make sure heated beauty products are unplugged among other things. However, sometimes attempting to prevent fires isn’t enough and they occur anyway. Despite this, there are many ways that people can ensure their survival in the unfortunate case of a fire. For example, having fire sprinklers installed in your home, having a fire alarm, and using fire extinguishers.
