Justified Violence In the Face of Oppression: Exploring Unequal Power Dynamics Violence is a storytelling motif used in all forms of art, from film to literature. It also takes many forms, from the bloody, ridiculous violence in horror movies like Friday the 13th to the tragic violence in old literature such as Romeo and Juliet. In her book Mexican Gothic, Silvia Moreno-Garica develops her own writing style regarding scenes of violence—most characters in the book cause or experience (most often both) violence throughout the novel. The reader can even notice a pattern where most characters who experience violence and oppression go on to use violence as an outlet to express self-advocacy in the face of this oppression. Using the words “cut it from me” and “spring me free,” we see her physical incapability to release herself from the oppression she faces at this moment. Moreno-Garcia uses the scene of violence and the vulnerability of characters to express the systematic oppression that’s built into High Place. The abrasive diction here expresses Catalina’s vulnerability and misery while also employing a pathos effect, making the reader and Noem feel empathy and concern towards Catalina. Moreno-Garcia uses juxtaposition to expose the drastic difference between characters’ access to power, justifying acts of violence as the cause of resisting oppression. During one of the final moments when Catalina, Francis, and Noem try to escape High Place, there is one of the most violent scene descriptions yet, surprisingly caused by Catalina. Catalina is usually described as “a bit of a weakling” (144). So when she is described as “Catalina became a maenad, her frenzied stabbing- the scalpel bit the neck, the ear, the shoulder - brought forth a river of black pus and dark blood, splattering the covers” (271).
